Is it worth buying oblivion?

Post » Tue Jul 24, 2012 10:24 am

Sorry if this may be in the wrong forum, but I wanted to post in here because i figured it is used more and i could get more opinions and answers. My first TES game started with Skyrim and i was in absolute awe by it. I was wondering if Oblivion would do the same. I know the game of the year edition on consoles only cost 20 bucks, but is it such a step back from Skyrim that it wouldn't be worth it? Are there things in Oblivion that are done better than in Skyrim? How are the quests? I just wanted to know if I'm starting Oblivion too late now since its 2012 and if anyone would enjoy it playing it for their first time in 2012.

I enjoyed Oblivion just as much as I enjoyed skyrim. The graphics aren't the best but hey they were considered pretty good back then :P.

The only thing you won't like about Oblivion is probably the graphics, other than that, the game is just as great as any other TES. Amazing. :tes:

If you want the "classic" experience, try Morrowind.

It depends: if you want a great game, with so much replay value and so many choices you'll be spending half of your day glued to your tv, then this is the game for you. Otherwise, just get Call of Duty.

yeah oblivions fine. kinda dated graphically - more "cartoony" than skyrim. quests are still great though, much longer guild quests than skyriim. skill system is different too, no perks.

morrowind is awesome too, but a much harder nut to crack. not nearly as accessable as skyrim or oblivion but if you persist it's the best in the series imo.

I absolutely loved Oblivion, but honestly now that I've played Skyrim it's hard to go back. SOOOOOO much has been improved in such great quantities that it's difficult to seriously play the older game. Skyrim has better graphics, swordplay, bow mechanics, level design, world design, animation, movement, camera FX/coloring, character design (OB = Cartoons wtf). Oblivion is still awesome, but so much has improved with Skyrim. If I get really in the mood though I can enjoy Oblivion but it happens less and less. :(

I got it and I'm lovin it! Decided to get the ultimate edition to replay one of my favorite games since a couple years ago my oblivion disk was in an unfaithful accident involving a baby and a vacuum.

I would recommend it. I find it to be better than Skyrim, and believe it not to be a step back from Skyrim, but quite the opposite, in all ways but the usual superficial aesthetic nonsense.

I was wondering if Oblivion would do the same.
Plenty of us love both games. Whether you will feel the same way depends on your tastes. What exactly was it that awed you about Skyrim? Until we know that it's impossible to say if Oblivion will have the same effect on you.

Are there things in Oblivion that are done better than in Skyrim?
There are things each of the Elder Scrolls games does better than the other games in the series. Each game has its own strengths and weaknesses. None of them are the "ultimate experience" or the "true game" in any way.

How are the quests?
Oblivion's main quest did very little for me. I thought the main quests of both Morrowind and Skyrim were more interesting. I particularly did not like Oblivion gates permanently ruining the landscape after the main quest was finished.

The guild quests are a different matter. I think most would agree that, by and large, Oblivion's guild quests are a bit more interesting and involved than most of the guild quests in Skyrim. If nothing else, Oblivion's guild quests tend to be longer.

It's my opinion that the side quests in both games are about equally interesting.

I just wanted to know if I'm starting Oblivion too late now since its 2012 and if anyone would enjoy it playing it for their first time in 2012.
It is never too late to start a good game. I don't even understand the concept, to be honest. If a game was good six years ago it is still good today. Games are not produce. They don't suddenly "turn bad."

I think with the right mods MW is still pretty accessible.

Certainly the graphics and animations are quite dated but you can mod all those up to be nearly on par with OB.

One of the most annoying things about vanilla MW for me was picking alchemy ingredients.. I can't remember what that mod is off the top but the one lets you just 'pick' stuff instead of opening it like an inventory.. priceless.

Yeah mod Morrowind and maybe you will enjoy it more than Oblivion.
From the three I played, Morrowind is my top one, followed by Skyrim and I put Oblivion in the last place, but I love the three.
But... I keep playing morrowind, and skyrim... not oblivion.

Edit: Mainly, two things killed oblivion for me: the character design (is not just cartoonish is terribly AWFUL , and the main quest, everything else is just fine)

If you want the "classic" experience, try Morrowind.

If you want classic, try Daggerfall.

Yes Oblivion's graphics are dated but I don't think it's going to be a complete culture shock like everyone is suggesting. I was just replaying it the other day and it really doesn't take long to get use to them.

Anyway, the answer is yes. Yes, get Oblivion. You will love it. I would also suggest Morrowind but that might be asking a little too much of you people who never played a game that wasn't for a next-gen console.

I prefer the main story of Oblivion to Skyrim's. I also think some of the guilds and quest are better and more diverse.

i think morrowind can look superior to oblivion with the right mods, mine does anyway. some of that has to do with the visual design though, oblivion was kinda crass in that regard - dayglow potato heads living in a plastic disney land, morrowind still looks totally unique.

most of the inaccessability in MW is the lack of handholding, i'm not sure if there's a mod to add quest markers but it would defeat the purpose. getting lost and wandering aimlessly in an alien world was part of what makes morrowind so great.
