Is it worth getting Fallout Collection?

Post » Thu Sep 23, 2010 5:03 pm

I have seen this going cheap in my local Game, is it worth getting?
I have never played the older Fallout games, number 3 was my first. Apart from graphics, what are the main differences between 1/2/tatics and 3?

Here's what I posted in a similar thread (I'll post it almost as is again because I'm lazy :D)
It's best to know what you're looking for, and since I'm not here to advertise, here are a few things that you should expect to find.

so regarding FO1&2:
They are old, they have ugly 2D graphics, they're turn-based(!), they're isometric.
They have very little spoken dialog (you will have to read most of the time).
Your companions are very likely (in fact - certain) to hit you during battle, while, unless you are really good with your weapon, you are going to be missing most of the time.
They need absolutely no 'physical' skill from your part (such as reflexes or precise aiming) to beat, you only get to click with your mouse and that's it .
You get no information from your journal about the quests other their title and there isn't even a compass or anything to help out a bit.
They are punishingly difficult early on.
They just can't take themselves seriously, especially FO2 - throwing all sorts of comical messages and easter eggs all over the place.
They have extremely few mods.
All enemies of the same kind look pretty much identical, you can't even see their faces.
You only get a perk every 3 levels.
There are no elaborate joinable factions, though there are some but they don't have long questlines or anything (even the BoS has almost one quest).
If you are ok with all that make sure to buy them because they are two of the very best cRPGs ever made.

...and well... I haven't played Tactics. Though of course it's not an RPG but a tactical 'strategy' spinoff, as it's obvious from it's title.

Tactics was fairly good, it was a tactical squad based mission game, akin to X-Com (with out the strategic parts). It's pretty much all combat.

I'd recommend that you get Fallout 1 & 2, since they by far surpass Fallout 3 in every aspect. After playing both the original Fallout's I guarantee you'll never want to play Fallout 3 again.

I generally think people are welcome to their own opinions...they are some times wrong however. I bought the triple pack to tide me over until I had enough disposable income to afford a new console system in order to play FO3 among other things, and while I wasn't expecting a whole lot I must say that watching a little + move across what is essentially a blank screen is not the same as exploring the wasteland in FO3. Not even close. I don't feel the same sense of immersion I do with FO3, but that is just me.

That said, I love those games, they are cool in their own right, and you should totally get it.

I find Fallout 1 and 2 are more immersive in respect to everything not related to graphics. All games are good including Fallout Tactics. Fallout 3 is also a good game. We are lucky to have games like these to play.

Actually I thought that the original Fallout took itself more seriously than Fallout 3 did. The original Fallout had minimal easter eggs, and the humor was of a dark nature while Fallout 3's humor is a bit more off the wall (Moira Brown, Liberty Prime, Tranquility Lane etc) and Fallout 2-like... except without the breaking of the fourth wall.

I would say yes, assuming ya know the line the first two is more RPG Oriented and turnbased-like and not a shooter.

Assuming ya will get the game, it is urgent ya start with Fallout 1 first and not Fallout 2.

So yes, I would recommend trying this collection out.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to the best source to get the Fallout Collection? Like the OP I am interested in getting the collection as well, but so far I have found no less than three ways to get it. You can buy a hardcopy on CD through on-line retailers like Amazon, buy it as a download through Steam, or buy it as a download through Good Old Games. Is there any difference between these three versions? I assume getting a hardcopy on CD would be the most reliable, but I've got enough CDs laying around the house and would prefer less clutter and so am leaning towards getting it through Steam or GOG. Has anyone had any trouble with Fallout games purchased through Steam or GOG?

I purchased both games from GOG (great service, by the way). The file sizes are not very big by today's standards, I downloaded and installed both within about an hour. There is also no DRM on games purchased from GOG, so you buy the game once and you will have access to it forever, from any computer, as long as you can access the internet.

I would recommend buying on GOG, even over buying the hard copies. Not only are you saving on space, you're supporting a web site dedicated to preserving the great games that have come before. And you don't have to buy the (decidedly inferior) Fallout Tactics.

Most of the online digital distribution platforms sell the US Editions which aren't censored; the European versions (which you get in the White Label Fallout Collection) have children censored out which is problematic in Fallout 2's The Den because they pick pocket you if you're not careful, and the censor makes them invisible doesn't remove them entirely. You can download unofficial patches that add the children back in though.

I'd recommend buying it either through Good Old Games, or buying the US "Fallout Trilogy" compilation both of which have the US versions of the games; that way you don't have to worry about applying children patches on top of or under the fan made unofficial patches.

They are punishingly difficult early on.

Compared to other RPGs from the 90s, the Fallouts are ridiculously easy.

Well like the OP my first Fallout game was Fallout 3. I've never been into RPG gaming much as I've never tried them to be honest. However I got the Fallout Collection the other day and started last night on Fallout. I must say, I am struggling, really struggling. I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing and I keep getting killed by Raiders, I've not even made any progress yet, I found Vault 15, that is about it.

But, I'll keep trying, and I am enjoying it.

Overall yes. But not on the first few levels (especially FO2) and neither if you're new to the RPGs of that time or compared with the difficulty of FO3.

Thanks for the info. I had read in some other posts on this forum and over on NMA about that issue of being pickpocketed by invisible kids in Fallout 2 if playing a censored version of the game (which sounds like something that would be really annoying), and I wanted to make sure that wherever I got Fallout 1 and 2 from that they would be the uncensored versions. I thought since GOG is based in europe that they might only have the censored versions of Fallout 1 and 2, but now that I know they actually distribute the uncensored versions, I think I'll go ahead and get Fallout 1 and 2 from GOG. Thanks again for all the info.

Yep, it can get tough on you. You're at a low level, so don't get into fights right away. Get some gear in Vault 15, just run away from those random encounters for now, get some experience in Shady Sands (the village, green circle, in between Vault 13 and 15) and talk to the people. They will give you new locations to travel to, unless you wish to explore yourself. If you find yourself in some kind of camp full of raiders, don't attack them if they don't attack you. Not everyone or everything has to die (yet).
