It is worth to make a hybrid all-type character?

Post » Tue Dec 24, 2013 12:38 pm

I've mastered to get 100 in destruction and 60 in alot of other spells masteries, but master and expert destruction are totally worthless! and brings you nearly to death!

But i don't want to reset totally myself, i still want to use the magic but also do something esle, how do you guys think? Can i make an all type character or i will have too many weak points?

I see Jack of all trades characters as a playstyle for someone new to the series but only for their 1st character.

Mixing it up is cool as long as you don't use any (or only one, if you really feel like you have to) crafting skills.

Right now I got a nord spellsword going. Using destruction, restoration, light armor, archery, block and one-handed.

Are hybrids worth making? Yes. Are jack of all trades worth making? Yes if you want to get all the acheivements in one playthrough other wise, no.

I think you just need to balance your hp,stamina, magicka with how you plan to play your character. You might be using all three, but will you be using some more than others? You can be a hybrid but still lean heavily in, say, a magic build - in which case you'll probably want to invest more points into your magicka. I feel like there's really no wrong way of doing it unless you're getting yourself killed.

What else are you planning on investing in? One-handed maybe? Sneak? Need to know how you plan to play.

I've done hybrid jack of all trades(well i don't use two handed weapons) on all my characters across 5. Put in over 1000 totally combined, i don't see how it's only for someone new for there first character?

My first character was a jack of all trades. First to get to level 81 legitimately and had 450 hours. I didn't know what I was doing, so I did everything. Made 2 similar characters since then.

I think its better for new players since they won't know much. IMO its better to have a specific, focused character with certain skills than a character that pretty much knows them all.

Agreed. I thing specialised characters are far more interesting to play once you know your way around the game.

As a lot of fellow players have said in here, I think specialists are far better and more interesting than generalist characters (jack of all trades). Imo, they are easier to role play, create a back story, and give you reason to try different characters later on, specialising in something else.

2 exemples here... First, you are a Khajiit, thief/assassin, who cannot get in walled cities unless it's night time and you sneak in (putting points into sneaking, one handed for daggers, archery, alchemy for poisons, maybe a support skill like speech or pickpocket).

Another one, you are an Altmer mage, who actually hates the Thalmor. You will hunt every single one of them because they made you flee from Summerset Isles, but you also hate Nords, as they hate elves back. You will rise in the College of Winterhold, putting points into whatever magic schools you like (for me, Destruction and Conjuration are always a must).

So, with this you can have completely different characters, which makes the game fresh. After you have completed which ever was the goal for that character (like becoming Archmage and getting all Deadric artefacts, let's say, you can jump to another one). That's how i like playing.

Your Magic/health/stamina, points depends on alot of things. here's the "hybrid" I am playing now

Cara, 1h, heavy armor, distruction, conjuration, enchanting. ( major skills) She's at 200 magic ( naturally) plus 45 ring and hood, 120 health ( natural) 150 enchanted armor & necklass, 100 stamina ( I just use potions and food).

She will only have 2 points in smithing and the bottom 5 in armor. ( the smithing may change, as I have something in mind) The bottom 5 in 1h. The rest of her points will go into "magic", but only to a certain point. What I mean is, I rarely ever use all my "perk" points. I don't want my character OP ( over powered) and this is the type character that can easily become OP. I find spellsword , Battlemage, sorceress, witch...etc type builds fun. ( well also non-magic users)

I would had said that a sword & shield warrior would be a good 1st character, as it's easy to build, simple to use & very easy to play through as. Hybrid, jack of all trades builds are more challenging IMO, as your spreading your skills more thinly.

@Skystar93 it's totally viable to mix magic with either a warrior or stealth based character. I probably wouldn't mix all 3, as i personally like there to be some definition to my characters.

As to the distribution of points, it all depends on what style your aiming at. E.g a Battlemage would have 60% mana/ 40% health & use spells to deal damage, and use a melee weapon in support when mana is used up. Where as a Spellsword would be more 40% health, 30% stamina/mana based & use melee to deal damage, and use magic in support.

All characters eventually turn into jacks of all trades, or at least they did before the Legendary skill option. But it definitely works, and makes a strong character. You just have to creatively allocate your perks, and do without some things.

Most of my characters end up as jack of all trades to one degree or another. Never had any real problems with it. The trick is figuring out where you can sacrifice so you can best support the playstyle. If you're good at dodging attacks and use hit and run tactics, for example, then you don't really need to invest as heavilly in armor skills.

I won't say it's easy, because it's not. Especially on the higher difficulty levels. But for me at least, it's a lot more fun that specializing in a single style of combat.

I mean there are things i use more often than others I just don't like the idea of restricting myself only for a roleplay aspect of "i should be a mage only" or "warrior only"

First character was my first and only jack of all trades, and yes he was an Rp character. And it fit his character perfectly, at the same time I was experimenting with the various skills and shouts (which were treated as abilities not shouts).

So go for it if you want.

Haha, this is like a disguised 'DESTRUCTION svckS' thread :D Kidding.

If you don't like the current state of destruction i would advise you to get mods if you're on PC. There's nothing worse than finally getting 100 in a skill (moreover destruction is pretty hard to level) only to find out that you're still less than useful.

You can easily transit to a warrior with conjuration though. Just summon your minions and start hacking away inconspicuously at the enemy, perhaps with your bound weapons.

Elemental Cloaks, Elemental Minions, and Bound Sword or two.

Dragonhide for a fully Perked Alterationist will last more than a Minute, and (IMO) is not too expensive. Ignoring 80% of Damage is fun for a Robe wearing Mage.

Jack of all trades master of everything is pretty easy to make but you can have everything and must skip useless skills.

Skills you want to use you only take the most essential perks.

Good skills are smithing (gives dmg and hp), sneak (you can haxx), archery (ranged dmg)

Useless skills are restoration, lockpicking, pickpocket (the "can carry more" -perk might be handy), destruction, speech

Rest are situational.

Restoration might be useless to you, but ace for people who play on higher difficulties and aren't potion spammers. I rather rely on my magic pool than carry 20 potions that break up combat. And wards are hella useful.

Most will become an all type character as the game progresses. Starting as say an archer-type character, adding other skills as they progress. Become pretty good at one thing and expand into other areas of play, it keeps the game more interesting and less likely of becoming a bit boring doing the same play. That's what I do anyway. The points, I let them pile up and only use them to enable different kinds of play... mostly. Pretty good with archery with just a limited amount of perks, but it's easy to increase power by things you can wear, clothes, trinkets or whatever. Plenty of that stuff to buy or find in the game, or even make.

It's been worth it for me to have the hybrid's I have. Character's that can only stay in one class usually bore me.
