Would I Am I to late to the party?

Post » Thu May 03, 2012 3:39 pm

I am still waiting on getting a new computer so I can complete my mod "Tiiguar~ A new companion" (link in sig) but now I am wondering, lets say I do get one within the next two months.... Skyrim will be out and everyone will be flocking over to that game's modding community.

I can't get Skyrim for the PC since my computer won't be powerful enough. (low on funds)

Will the Oblivion modding community still be going strong?
Is the Morrowind modding community already dead?
Should I just not mod until I get a strong enough computer to mod Skyrim? (could take years after years)

EDIT~~~~

It should be: Would I be / Am I late to the party?

My opinion :

Oblivion modding scene will die soon, whatever Oblivion had over Morrowind (tech side of graphics, and err... that's it) Skyrim should do better.

Morrowind should still be kept alive for a while by projects like Tamriel Rebuilt, but that doesn't mean a lot of players, if any, will be interested by a new, non-lore related, mod. (I for one don't even look at companion mods) You should rather ask yourself whether you're having fun or getting any satisfaction from developing your mod before even looking at its potential audience.

So both communities are practically dead and Skyrim will bring them both together (in a sense)?

Dang... looks like I'm to late to do any modding at all.

Don't get discouraged though, Morrowind will always have a core of dedicaced players. Just don't expect a million views on YouTube.

And I wouldn't be surprised if some old Morrowind players, after finishing Skyrim and being disappointed with the setting, get back to Morrowind for a while.

Thank you for your responses so far. It is kind of sad though :(

It's only natural to see the once-strong tide of Morrowind modders decrease to a smaller stream as time passes by, particularly as a new editor with new capabilities approaches, but there is still much that can be done with Morrowind and much that people are working on. There are a number of projects still in the works, and though the forums aren't as fast as they used to be, I'd hardly say that it is "too late" to mod Morrowind. As stated, though, you probably shouldn't expect an obscene number of downloads, so make sure that if you're working on something, you're having fun doing it! Modding is a hobby, and to me releasing a finished product is just icing on the cake.

Alright thank you. I'm doing it more for experience in level design and scripting and such. :P Maybe I'll make a few quests.

I mod mainly for myself and sometimes to help others, and just like with the game itself, even though I take long breaks, I always go back to it eventually.

Mod for your own amusemant, mod to make your own game better, mod to teach yourself more, and always enjoy it, no matter if there is a community behind it or not :)

There are plenty of Morrowind mod users, it's just that some have left these forums for other places. You should mod for yourself first. If you like what you made, release it and others will download it. Sure your mod might not shoot to the top overnight, but I think it's better to have a few great compliments than a large number of downloads with little to no feedback at all.

For the record, the Morrowind community is still going strong, just not necessarily here. Come over to GHF or Wolflore and you'll see what I mean.

I'm on GHF but I still see the same problem. I'll look at Wolf Lore.

Alright I'll mod for Morrowind then. I've already learned most of the basics and can do a ton of stuff in the CS especially with scripting. Maybe I'll start working on some Wheel of Time mods.

I don't know why anyone would think that modding is near dead for Morrowind - there are still top quality mods coming out for it - often though the modders are taking a lot longer on their works rather than quick releases. Though that said my tiny dialogue fix for Bloodmoon has had almost 4000 downloads in less than 18 months so I know there are still plenty of people playing the game.

The forum may be quiet but it isn't dead - there are some very experienced modders who keep an eye on this forum amd are very helpful when it comes to scripting questions.

For the solo modder who just wants to learn some new skills and add content to a game that they can play with then Morrowind is still a great choice.

With any hobby modding is about what you get out of it, your opportunity to be creative - the community is still around and will likely be for some time - once Skyrim has been completed by many some will come back to Morrowind and Oblivion to bring some of the mod content and stories from Skyrim to flash up Morrowind

I agree with Illuminiel.

I can't believe people think Morrowind modding is fading away. There are massive projects being worked on, and the Code Patch and MGE are still being improved all the time because there is a demand for new options.

And yeah, learning how to mod Morrowind is very easy (unlike some other games) so it's a great place to start.

I love Morrowind and I know how to use the CS, plus it's easier then modding Oblivion since there is no need to do voice acting. I am thinking about just doing a simple dungeon mod to start with.

It's likely that Skyrim is going to bring new people to Morrowind and Oblivion, just as Oblivion did to Morrowind. People that get into the lore and world will probably want to play the earlier games, and with new engines being worked on, Morrowind is far from dead. If you can mod a game this much, it will be modded for a long time. Sure, activity here will probably practically cease while people play Skyrim, but that is to be expected.

It is my hope that people will still mod and play Morrowind for many, many years to come. People come and go but I find that it's very hard to leave for good, nor would I want to!

As has already been said, I believe Morrowind is very much alive and will be for some time. Long live Morrowind :D

To answer your question: Yes. Province: Cyrodiil is another big province mod, and I think there was/is? a Black Marsh mod that is intermittently being worked on.

Wolflore is working on an advlt temple/resort dedicated to the worship of Dibella. Right now we could use more landscapers and/or interior designers, so if you're interested and are at least 18 years old, we would welcome you to our team. :obliviongate:

Well yeah, but Illy makes great mods! And who wants every Imperial guard to say his son was recently shipped up to Fort Frostmoth?
But no, the morrowind modding community is still very active and alive, just not as much as it once was. I will be modding TESIII indefinitely.

I have only ever modded for myself. Occasionally you think "maybe someone else might enjoy this" so you release it.

I concur that i fully expect Oblivion to die (ha ha Morrowind wins!). I am looking forward to Skyrim modding but fully intend to continue with my major project at the moment (POA, in sig).

Essentially: if you play Morrowind, keep modding :D

As long as newer PCs are made to run Morrowind and Oblivion they will be modded for years and years to come.
Some modders have spent more time learning and modding these two games then they would have spent becoming doctors.
These folk will never let it go and they will mod for their own enjoyment and possibly yours for a long time to come - I don't see Skyrim taking anything away from them.
Morrowind modding is a hobby and just because a 'new' hobby comes along does not mean the old one is dead.
I can easily say that I will be modding Morrowind and Oblivion for the rest of my life. (I'm 71 so it's easy to say)!

Welcome to the party!

Considering that Skyrim has been out for what, 2 weeks(?) now, and we're still getting new people coming to Morrowind, I doubt it'll go away anytime soon. The only thing that will kill it is if Skyrim's CK is just that much easier to use than Morrowind's CS. Even then I don't see Morrowind modding dying anytime soon.

Both still have mods released almost daily.

They don't have nearly as many active players as they did closer to launch. But they still have some mod communities.
