Would I like Oblivion if I love Skyrim?

Post » Fri Dec 09, 2011 8:51 am

Ok...so here is the deal. I rented Oblivion awhile ago, got to the end of the prison break and decided to bag it. Didn't like the floaty weapons and stuff. I just bought skyrim for the PS3 and am freaking loving it. I love just about everything about the game.

So here is my question: Would I enjoy playing Oblivion on my PC when I am not at home?

Thanks for helping.

What do you mean by "floaty weapons and stuff"

I like Oblivion at least as much as Skyrim. Of course I've played Oblivion more than Skyrim and that might change. But I really like them both. Not sure if you will. I've been playing Oblivion almost since the game was released, and I can't think of any floaty weapons that I've encountered :)

Well if you've got Oblivion on PC, you can pretty much change anything you don't like with mods and console commands. You can customize your game, basically. Soudns like you didn't like it from your description, OP.

...floaty weapons?

Just keep in mind Oblivion is a much different game in certain aspects. Completely different style, Cyrodiil isn't as "grim" as Skyrim. A lot of people complain about Oblivion for lots of reasons, bla bla bla. I love it myself, though  But you got a PC, therefore you can get mods. Anything you want to change can probably be changed in the long run.

...floaty weapons and stuff.. ???

I'm going to make a guess and say that the OP probably means the way weapons kind of float in the air near the character's back or hip after they've been sheathed.

My opinion is this: Oblivion, for PC, with mods, is the best roleplaying computer game I have ever played. It's a very fun game even without mods (as Reneee and others can testify). But with mods Oblivion approaches - for me, anyway - a state that is about as close to gaming nirvana as it is possible to get in this lifetime, with this technology.

Ok. My bad. I definitely should have elaborated on the "floaty weapons and stuff". Keep in mind, I only played it for about an hour....and it was a while ago.

By floaty weapons I just meant that I felt like there was a disconnect between my weapon and the thing I was supposedly smashing the heck out of. I felt like the only thing I was hitting was little ticks off of a bar. Thinking back though, I felt kind of similar about skyrim at the beginning. Now I'm frying dudes left and right, smashing them with my shield, and knocking them over the head with my mace. ....uh oh. I'm getting excited just thinking about it. :woot: ...... So....back to reality. Is the combat in Skyrim vastly improved over what it is in Oblivion? Is it possible that I've matured as a gamer?

Mods are an interesting idea. What kind of mods are there? Gaming nirvana sounds like a pretty awesome place to be. :D

What do you mean by it isn't as "grim"? I wouldn't really describe Skyrim is grim....then again I was just playing Fallout..... :nuke:

Oh...and completely unrelated sidenote. Some of these emoticons are freaking hilarious!

Thanks to everyone for replying. :celebration:

Combat is Skyrim is definitely better done.

Cyrodiil (the province Oblivion takes place in) has brighter colors for the most part. Everything seems clean. It jsut has a much more lighthearted feel to it. I dunno, I'm tired. Someone will come along and explain it better. :snoring:

I list a few of my favorites in this thread: http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1294183-what-mods-would-you-recommend/

Yes. If you like Skyrim then you will like Oblivion, but you will need to understand its attribute / skill leveling before you start a new game. Mandatory. But if you're willing for a graphics downgrade, then perhaps you would be interested in going right to Morrowind.

Thanks Pseron! They look awesome! Do they have a large impact on the speed that the game runs?

Nenina, now that you mention it, that was something else that bugged me with Oblivion when I started it. I was completely and utterly lost from when I started creating my character. Is there a place that I could go to educate myself on it?

Hmmmm...Morrowind ....I'm not as concerned with the step down in graphics as I am about the gameplay mechanics. What are they like?

King Coin, you definitely have the right idea. I have a 730 class tomorrow... :banghead:

Thanks everyone for helping! I'm shocked :shocking: by how fast I got replies here. I was expecting at least a week before I got this many.

This is one of the best places I know to get information: http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Oblivion The other best place is right here. We have some real experts on this game here on this forum. They can answer just about any question you can put to them.

About mods and performance: a lot of it depends on your computer. But, in general, yes: a few of these mods (Mart's Monster Mod, Better Cities, ect) may lower framerates.
