Yes. 1, 2, and Tactics are all good.

Don't buy Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel, though. It svcks.

I haven't played 1 and 2 before, but I'm guessing if you're playing it for the "shooter" element, don't get them.

However, this is how my friend sold them to me (I'm going to get them when I get paid);

"IF you like your RPG and brilliant storyline as well as groin shots, play them"

they play way different, also the cutscenes are really buggy in win 7, personally i suffered through the gameplay for the story which imo is pretty good. Although if you like turn based isometric combat you may really dig the old games

dude you can melt mutants with some kind of chem in 2 and its bugged so the doctor gives you an unlimited amount.

But thats a one time thing so buy it for the awesome character creation, writing, aesthetics, face models and combat

The gameplay is very different from these new games, but they are of the highest regarded cRPG's of all time. I'd say give 'em a fair shot - even if you end up not liking them, they won't bankrupt you.

I love them. Fallout is a little harder than Fallout 2, but if you try hard enough because they can be frustrating then you will love them. Fallout 2 is hilarious, and always save a lot because there is no autosave. GET THEM NOW.

Likely you won't, but you can give it a try. Try not to pay for them.

It depends really. I hate the older Fallout games because I can't for the life of me stand Top Down View games, and that combined with Turn based Combat killed it for me. You're probably better off spending a few hours on the wiki if you're just wanting them fro their stories and to learn more fallout lore.

So you're saying he should steal them by using pirate sites or something?

OP, don't, they are dirt cheap so there is no reason to pirate them.

They are really cheap so why not? Do you like your game fast paced? If so then it might not be for you. But you can change the speed by ridiculous amounts. Also don't give up on it if you are finding it to be a chore at the beginning of the games. It's not an RPG that holds your hand.

Also, remember to either change the game options to "Always run" or to Hold Shift when you move. Took me a while to figure out that I didn't need to walk everywhere.

I'd suggest them to any fan of New Vegas or Fallout 3. To get a handle on things watch Dap 642's LP's, they're hilarious and informative. When I first started I checked them out and I learned how to play right away.

Like those limited offers where GOG gave Fallout 1 away.

I'm sorry then, from my perspective the post implied that pirating was the way to go.
I still suggest he buys them for real.

I got the three games (Fallout, Fallout 2 and Fallout Tactics) for $20 as a bundle on Steam. I'm currently doing my first playthroughs of Fallout and Fallout 2 - once I finish them I'll start on Tactics.

My Fallout character is currently Level 5 and is doing quests in Junktown. My Fallout 2 character is Level 9 and has just arrived in Broken Hills. I'm really enjoying both games a lot. The gameplay is very different than that of Fallout 3 and New Vegas, but once you get the hang of it, you'll do just fine. The first enemies you'll encounter are very easy - they'll give you some good opportunities to practice with the combat system and gain XPs. They get a lot tougher quickly, though.

If you get the Steam bundle, you'll probably have to patch Fallout and Fallout 2 to get the graphics to work properly on your computer. But there are several methods out there to patch your game and they're all easily implemented. I haven't played Tactics yet, as I mentioned, but I did launch it after installation to make sure it worked, and the graphics seemed to be okay "out of the box" on my computer.

One mod you may want to seriously consider for Fallout 2 is the Fallout 2 Restoration Project. It fixes a ton of bugs, patches the graphics and adds a bunch of content that was cut from the vanilla game. You'll find information on this mod, as well as other patches for Fallout and Fallout 2, on the NMA (No Mutants Allowed) forums.

Yeah and that's the only thing they have in common with it, the isometric viewpoint, other than that they are nothing like Diablo.

My opinion is that the first two games are like Diablo with Turn Based Combat.

Easiest way to see how the originals play is to look up a "let's play" of them on youtube.

Diablo is the standard "don't read quest just kill the boss" RPG. I like the click-em-up game, don't get me wrong. But they aren't that similar.

I played them years ago back in the late 90s they are fun but they are horribly out dated now good atmosphere but there is a ton of clicking you will have to do with the mouse I did love the first two games at the time
