Would Oblivion be interesting to play after Skyrim

Post » Wed Aug 28, 2013 11:05 am

I bought Oblivion on disc some time ago but never got around to playing it. Would it still be interesting to play it after playing Skyrim? I can imagine that the graphics would be disappointing since it is an older game, so the story line would have to be really great to make up for that.

Yes, of course. It's a great game. Oblivion has some of the best Guild/Faction story lines in the series.
The graphics have aged very well... except maybe the faces.

(and I don't see how older graphics would be "disappointing" anyways. A good game is a good game regardless of how it looks)

And then when you're done with that, move on to Morrowind. Another classic TES game.

I started with Oblivion and still immensely enjoyed Morrowind. So yeah, Oblivion is worth playing after playing Skyrim.

But I have spent some time in the Skyrim forum and some people who play Skyrim seem overly concerned with fluid combat, graphics and power gaming. If those are the primary draw for you, then you may be disappointed going back to earlier games.

But if you are interested in exploring an interesting game world, roleplaying and don't mind dealing with a more complexity In character creation and the magic system, then Oblivion is definitely worth a shot. As well as Morrowind.

Yes, absolutely. Most questlines are better than in Skyrim and there are some amazing side quests, so if you're interested in the story you won't be disappointed. One of the good things about TES is that even though the series evolved over the years, it doesn't mean that new games are in every way better and there's no point in playing the old ones - as it sometimes happens with more repetitive franchises.

But then the faces were ugly even when Oblivion first came out. :yuck:

If you already have the disc then why not give Oblivion ago? Regarding graphics, I use a fair amount of mods but I do not bother with any Graphic enhancing ones, I have not found the absolute need for them even after playing Oblivion for some time now. This is only my subjective opinion though. All I can say is that when my character steps out of the starting tutorial prison I have been knocked back by the beauty of the world around him/her. Many other players have said the same.

Also, playing a mage is much more satisfying in Oblivion. With Spellmaking, you'll be able to create almost any spell you want from the ones in game. The magic visuals aren't as fancy as Skyrim, but it's much more versatile.

That's an interesting and positive spin on the frequent complaint that Bethesda has streamlined and removed beloved features from later installments -- prolonging the life of older titles. I love it.

This is the main reason I was drawn back to Oblivion after over a year playing Skyrim. The Oblivion magic system is so much more diverse and allows for a much higher degree of player creativity. Oblivion players have come up with very creative ways to combine spell effects in ways that actually create something new that is much more than the sum of its parts. One example I often use is Shadow Warrior, the master sneak perk from Skyrim that lets your character regain hidden status quickly. The concept of Shadow Warrior was actually invented by Oblivion players combining

short duration command and short duration invisibility
through Oblivion spell making. Neither of those two effects by themself will quite do the trick, but combine them and you really have something.

As someone who has over 2000hrs in skyrim I can say positively Oblivian is a game to try. Although I still haven't found everything in skyrim (always tripping over something new), Oblivion has a different spin on what you can control in the game and in my noobie experience seems to have a lot of potential for RPGing with a lot of good forum help. Just a note it took a few charactor starts for me to start to realize its potential.

Each Elder Scrolls game has its good points and its bad points. I completely disagree with the poster above me: none of them are "by far the better game." What one game lacks another game makes up for. Since you already own the game, there's no point in not trying it, it seems to me. Only you can tell whether Oblivion suits you or not.

:D

Mhm, I considering every TES game a different game, I'm actually playing Arena and Daggerfall right now, fun stuff.

Yea, I'll give it a try, I mean you already have it, why not? I get my moods, sometimes I want to play Skyrim, sometimes Oblivion, and so on. Right now i'm in an Oblivion mood!

I think Reguards are my favorite race now.

But faces are not that bad, I find it easy to get a good looking guy, they always need a beard, but they are still good looking.

You're gonna get all sorts of opinions in this thread, so here's the next one.

If you're only interested in graphics, you may be disappointed. I personally love OB's graphics, but not everybody does. They're not as razor-sharp as Skyrim. Some of the NPC faces might also look kinda goofy, after the hardened faces of the northlands. But don't be discouraged; Cyrodiil is a very vibrant place. Lots more colorful. :user:

I would not say Oblivon's stories and quests are necessarily better than Skyrim's but they ARE longer. They're more involving. By the time you become head of the Fighter's Guild, for instance, it feels like you've EARNED this title, simply because you've spent so much time climbing to the top.

In comparison, when one of my chars. became head of the Mage's College (and another head of Jorvaskr) I enjoyed the story-line, but I did not get that same feeling, like I did in Oblivion / Cyrodiil. These quest lines lasted less than an Earth-week or two, and I'm already at the top? :bonk:

OTOH, once you make it to the top of a Guild in Oblivion,
Spoiler
the quests associated with that guild suddenly stop
. This is not true in Skyrim where
Spoiler
quests keep showing up after we become head of something
. This is something nobody ever seems to take notice of. :deal:

There ya go. :goodjob:

OP: if you learn anything from some of us, learn to keep an open mind. Do not expect that the same things in one game will be in another; lest you wind up getting disappointed. Each game has stuff unique to its world.

Well my friend is getting oblivion and now i'm considering getting it to. He said so much stuff about it and it honestly seems like it's more of an RPG then Skyrim. I also really like that its so colorful! :bonk:

Oblivion is the best game in the series and it was my first. Been playing it since 2008 and I still find new stuff. Guild quests are better, much better. Even from the way they are introduced, especially the TG and DB. More spells and enchantments, more clothing and weapon options. Skyrim is a good game but it kind of feels like a lite version of a TES game. Going from Oblivion to Skyrim I was like "Wow, they took all this out", I think going from Skyrim to Oblivion you'll be surprised about how much is in the game, at the start from building your character, it's a totally difference experience. Ayleid Ruins are awesome and Cyrodiil is a much more interesting place to explore. Graphics aren't great, and they're not in Skyrim either. But as these games are so big they more an make up for it, just the amount of freedom you have. Then if you get the expansion packs...

Since when does Skyrim have good graphics anyway? They're mediocre at best.

Skyrim seems to function like the next step up from Morrowind to Oblivion.
