Would a paladin go college?

Post » Sun May 10, 2015 2:35 am

So i am creating a paladin build and i try find a good faction for him

spoilers alert

Companions good but not thanks to werewolf, even if i can cure no thanks to losing my humanity

brotherhood, obviously not

thieves no

only thing remaining is college. My paladin is a good person therefore i will allow him neutral or good magic. Enchanting, restoration and alteration.

Pretty much using healing spells to cure others, like a medic or something, using strong will to take strikes (like flesh armor) and using blessed weapons to hunt vampires or to finish fights.

I dont mind other people using magic near me since its their choice, unless they do something bad i shall not judge them.

So i think, would college be a good moral choice? After all you save skyrim and no one pushes you learn "dark magic" like conjuration.

I was just thinking, hey i can be a healer with some armor spells, but not more than that, no magic than can destroy people. Also paladins are fair trained people with education and good understanding of the justice, therefore a college (reading books and stuff) will also help others see the paladin as spiritual and understanding person.

What you say?

A paladin should know the difference between an arcane education and a courtly education.

If we're going by the typical 'paladin' people bandy about, then an armored holy knight has little interest in the affairs of magicians, unless he worships Julianos or something.

Obviously there is a difference but given the fact is a fictional game in medieval times, i cant see how a university in 1400 would look differently than the college. Many universities were like monasteries/castles back then. So my reasoning is

I go there and study how to heal human body, does the make sense to you?

A Paladin might well oppose a center of magical learning on purely religious grounds, since they are technically priests, eh?

Why not? Actually doing the questline is up to you, but you can become buddies with Collete Marence.

It depends if you want to stick to lore or bring in lore from outside TES. There isn't much lore about TES Paladins. We encountered an ex-Paladin in Oblivion. The dialogue concerning him mostly spoke about him being helpful to people and killing Goblins nearby. There was no dialogue that indicated that he was religious.

If you plan to stick to TES lore, I don't know why a Paladin couldn't do the College of Winterhold. I could also picture a Paladin doing the Destroy the Dark Brotherhood! quests.

What part of Burning Undead to Ash would a Paladin have a problem with? Cloak Spells do not harm Innocents, Rabbits burn for Carrot Theft, Foxes burn for Crimes against Chickens.

Collette needs a Friend.

A Paladin would study Conjuration to be able to fight Necromancers and perversions of Nature, like Vampires, Hagravens, Forsworn, Thalmor and Thier Imperial Thralls.

Onmund needs Moral Guidance and reassurance.

The College is the only Place in the Vanilla Game to aquire Expert and Master Level Spells, and has Expert Level Trainers in Every School of Magic but Enchanting.

The College is the Home of the Ysmir Collective, the largest Library outside of the Imperial City, even if the books are innaccessible in the Game :read:

The College is rather live and let live. So it's just a matter of whether or not your character will tolerate that. It supports whatever magical study won't bring harm to itself and those within in it, but students aren't obliged to do anything once they're in. Don't like necromancy? Don't study it. But don't take it out on Phinis Gestor.

Definitely do the college to hone your resto skill from a RP perspective. Absolutely yes!
I would also take on conjuration too. But only train, not to learn the spells. When you get high enough learn the expell daedra spell. That could be considered a good natured person as yourself sending an evil summoned entity back to where it came from.

In addition to the college I think the dawn guard would also be a great place for a paladin.

The only faction I'm 100% certain of would be the Dawnguard (or the Vigilants if you don't have the DLC). Florentius teaches Restoration.

Thank you for your answers. You helped me a lot (in previous play i killed 3 towns, so i feel obliged to be good character for next 20-40 hours).

My character will be a paladin, trying to do good. He is allowed to heal, try ask for blessing to his weapons (enchant) and use his fighting spirit (flesh armor spells) to fight the criminals.

He will study the basics in college till he can join dawnguard, to kill not all vampires, but certainly all the bad ones.

No, they are not priests - settings with paladins usually have priests as a separate class - and they are usually capable of some form of divine magic, so opposing all magic seems counter-intuitive. At the core, they are zealous knights. Their most typical version, the D&D-based one, has paladin orders devoted to deities with paladins upholding law and all virtues, wielding healing and protective magic - but there are also Blackguards, a paladin kit which is basically an evil anti-paladin.

But then you can have something most recently seen in Pillars of Eternity, where paladin orders are devoted to a specific person, cause or way of life, which doesn't have to be religious. For example, the Kind Wayfarers lack a centralized structure and their job is guiding and protecting travellers. The Brotherhood of the Five Suns is a political order devoted to the Vailian ducs.

And then there's Fire Emblem with paladins that don't even wield any magic, they're just promoted Cavaliers.

So, to answer the OP's question...

The College is a place of academic studies, people of all walks of life can find useful knowledge there. If you're going for a typical holy knight, you definitely have a reason to study magic and acquire general education. You don't necessarily have to get involved with the College questline, but I think it'd be wise to join to study Restoration to aid you in your journey and Conjuration to gain an understanding of what you're going up against. The last won't work so well gameplay-wise (except the Expel Daedra spell), but I'd imagine a paladin would spend some time learning about various demonic creatures and how to fight them, no? Also, like Vaen said, Dawnguard is an obvious choice.

Reminds me of my war priest. Used heavy armor, only maces and all restoration spells.

Historically, Paladins essentially began as the "Twelve Peers" of Charlemagne about the year 800 AD. They were represented as being the virtuous knights of Christianity, defending Christianity against the Saracens. I say they were priests, though that would really have meant something different than what we think of at that point in time, because their duty to their King, their God, and their Nation, was to spread Christianity while bringing battle to those who opposed those specifics. I must point out that magic, and traffic with magicians was viewed as completely evil at that time.

As far as D&D was concerned at least back as far back as the Cyclops version, and into Second edition, Paladins were knights in armor, but with the powers of a priest as given daily by the deity they served. this resulted in a very strict code of conduct for Paladins, and the use of magic in the style of a mage was strictly forbidden in most cases.. yes, you could be an evil Paladin, but that really changed very little as far as the rules were concerned. It just reversed the role of the Paladin and whatever deity he served.

I'd join the college.

I might also join the Dark Brotherhood, just for the opportunity of destroying it. Last time I had a character they took on 3 contracts to kill my character. Their organization is a menace to Skyrim.

Right, of course. I was thinking about how paladins are presented in video games, not really about their historical inspirations.

As for magic in D&D, this may be true in that setting, but has little relevance in TES lore and especially in gameplay. Skyrim has no divine magic like that, a paladin's healing and wards would simply be Restoration, so one of regular magic schools. In this situation, a paladin's reluctance to get involved with magic doesn't make any sense unless we give up the magic powers altogether and create a regular, if virtuous, knight.

However, there are some similarities between what you describe and for example the Nords' attitude to thu'um as opposed to regular magic, or Redguards and their sword-singing. But I'm not sure how it could be helpful to creating a paladin-like character in Skyrim.
