I only played fallout 3 for a long time, then played fallout 2 and I thought it was actually really good...hard to control though. The graphics don't bug me one bit though so I think its pretty good.

The learning curve is a bit sharper for the originals, but they're still damn fun once you've figured it all out. I definitely recommend you get them as they're priced at 10$ each.

My local gamestop has the trilogy set for 15 dollars, Planning on getting it. You really can't go wrong for 15 dollars.

I'd definitly get them if thats the case. The first two IMO are incredible. Tactics is the weakest of the trilogy I'd say, but still damn fun. Great story, gameplay, I love everything about them. :fallout:

Yeah, I don't think they necessarily would. They are sort of two very different games. Sure, they're all three RPGs; but with different gameplay focuses and goals. Not to mention that they're from a different era where in-game tutorials weren't the norm (Fallout 1 pretty much assumes you've read the manual front-to-back from the very start of the game,) where it was considered common practice to be highly unforgiving of the player's mistakes. There's also the matter of the graphics, which are certainly starting to show their age after all these years. And I could see how the turn-based mechanics could be somewhat difficult to grasp for someone not used to those concepts.

I rather enjoy them, but I wouldn't recommend them to everyone. (Though yeah - on the other hand it's only like fifteen bucks for the box set, so it's not like it'd really be all that major of a decision.)

What can go wrong for 15 dollars? :P

IMO the series is a must to have for your collection if only for the manual, it's epic like the game itself!

It might be that you won't like the series (FO1&2) because of the gamestyle like nu_clear_day explained. But even then you can have a go at Fallout Tactics.

This is well worth the money if you ask me.

GFX don't bother me I play a game that looks like this...

http://www.strategy-gaming.com/reviews/west_front/close3d.jpg

Although I usually only read manuals if I am bored, or for Nastalgia's sake. (unless its a game I really really really like, Like TES) so that would be new for me.

These old eyes can't deal with graphics like that anymore. I start to get headaches. I have FO, FO2, FO: tactics. Occasionally I pull them out but within an hour I start getting a headache.

Bought it at gamestop on sale for 8.00, and it was with In-store Credit! Even put money down on FO:NV. I haven't put it in yet cause my comp has been acting up, but it came with no manuals :( (Unless they are digital)

Yeah, they're digital. When you put the disk in it will ask you to install them or you can install one or two of the games and keep one off (I installed the first two but didn't install Tactics). Then you go to the interplay folder in your computer and find Fallout 1 or 2's folder in there and there will be a few readable materails to open up, the manual (a PDF) among them.

I dunno if I'd like it. The graphics isn't what bothers me, I just don't like isometric games and turn based games.

I played Fallout 1. It was ok and just about any computer can take it too.

If you like a good story with a decent amount of options for action, then you'll like the "Originals". On the other hand, if you like no plot, bad writing and tons of graphic violence, then the "Originals" may not be your best option.

I played Fallout 3 for months before I tried my hands on Fallout 1 (and now Fallout 2). I do like the games, without a doubt. I thought F1 had a very good story and an interesting world, but I found it surprisingly small. A main questline consisting of three quests, 20-something quests in total and a very small world to explore. But my main problem with both those two first games is the isometric view. I really, really dislike it, and for me it will be a heavy drawback to any game, no matter how good it is in other areas.

I am looking forward to playing 1 and 2, i was raised on computer games like that as a kid and it would be good to get back to my roots. I just ordered the trilogy off ebay for 8 bucks. You cant beat that, 3 games for 8 bucks! I don't care about graphics or anything and i love turn based strategy.

So should i play 1 then 2 or do they need to be played in order?

You don't have to play them in order since they're stand alone stories. However Fallout 2 pulls no punches as it's bigger and more complex, and while it's a stand alone story it does reference events and places from the first game frequently. I'd recommend playing the first one first since it's more manageable and less overwhelming when you start out, and while the sequel is its own separate story it relies on the original game for background information.

I have FO1 and 2. Heard a lot of negative things about Tactics so I didn't bother. I like them. Unfortunately for me I am color blind and have a lot of difficulty with the colors so unfortunately I do not play them often. As it stands frag mines in FO3 are practically invisible for me to see and they are rather large compared to most of the things in the originals.

I think so... Unless you don't like a challenge....
The old games are MUCH harder, more ruthless....
I can't count how many times I've died over the years, just trying to get through the opening sequence of FO2....
That being said, I prefer 2 over 1 since I've always found the built in time constraints in FO1 difficult to overcome...

The Box set comes with a patched FO1 that allows you infinite time once you find the water chip. The best way to describe the originals are hard to learn easy to master.

What I dont like about them, which didnt bother me when I played them first because modern games are so much better (except for starcraft the only perfect game), was the lack of balance and polish.

The game even patched is full of bugs and the stat system is terribly unbalanced, int is godly charisma is worthless I mean worthless, followers are liabilities that die quicker then terran marines, ohhh and half the stats in the game are microscopically useful (Repair, Outdoorsman, Doctor/Firstaid)

I'm most likely going to get the Fallout Collection, Fallout 1, Fallout 2, Fallout: Tactis, Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel from my local GAME store for £5.

I agree....
I've had Myron, Dogmeat and Skynet all make it to the end of the game.

I liked that they could die easily (and messily) if you didn't pay attention during a fierce battle. Something just hilarious about getting a companion, going into the very next fight, and watching them gib themselves with a critical failure.... "Hmmm.... Guess I'm on my own again?"
