Would you buy a Morrowind remake for Xbox Live or PSN?

Post » Wed Nov 30, 2011 5:58 pm

I've seen a few threads recently about Morrowind remakes and I’m sorry to repeat what has already been said but I think this thread is a bit more specific as to how a remake could actually work.

Some people have suggested a new engine, combat and voice acting but I think that is very unrealistic. What I am suggesting is a third party developer simply makes the game able to run on the Xbox 360 and the PS3 at a widescreen HD resolution, configure the textures so they look a bit nicer (maybe even HD) and then distribute it as a digital download with the expansion packs bundled with it. It would give console players who started at Oblivion or Skyrim a chance to see what all the fuss is about, and looking at the sales figures for consoles I imagine there are a lot of casual players who started with Oblivion or Skyrim.

I tried playing the Xbox version on my 360 and it really didn't work very well, it looked and ran a lot worse than the standard PC version. As for PC let’s not turn this into a PC vs. console thread, everyone on here knows you can make Morrowind look better than Oblivion on PC and you don't need a remake so that's why this thread is specifically for consoles, the figures show a lot of people like playing Elder Scrolls games on consoles and they are missing out on one of the best in the series.

I would.

I'm desperate to play Morrowind...but after playing both Oblivion and Skyrim on 360, I'm worries it won't fare as well.

I would be very surprised if any company just decided to do this for consoles. There would likely be legal issues, and the profit would be small (compared to the huge task) because the game is still readily for sale on the PC... which has the bonus of mod usage.

I don't understand why people are reluctant to play Morrowind on PC.
Basically any PC can run the game very well, the mods are all free, and you can even use your Xbox controller.

I would never buy a remake of any sort. Because I can remake Morrowind for free just by installing mods, patches and MGE.

Heck, even when the PC engine re-writes are finished (there are currently three in progress) they will be free too, and support mods.

If, for any reason, you don't like playing "older" games then Morrowind is not for you.

Pluto, the thing is most people on these forums are hardcoe Elder Scrolls fans who know about all the games, all the lore and know how to mod a game to get it looking and playing as up to date as possible. But i read yesterday that Skyrim has sold 7 million copies, out of all those people i'd guess there's a lot of people who havn't played or maybe even heard of Morrowind. Why would they put time into modding the game on the PC? What I'm saying is that if a remake popped up on Xbox live for 1200 Microsoft points and it was clearly advertised as a previous Elder Scrolls game i think people would download it because they liked Oblivion or Skyrim and it's so easy just to give it a try.

EvilTaffyapple, if they improved the resolution and textures it would look very similar to Oblivion the only thing that might make it seem dated is that there's no voice acting when you talk to people so there's quite a lot of reading.

I never said that a remake should not exist.... The question you asked was, "Would you buy it?"
I just think that most PC players would not bother with it, or even think it necessary.

It's well know that the majority of people play it on the PC, and for a few good reasons:
- Morrowind was always originally intended as a PC game. It was from the great 1990-2001 PC era of RPGs that had a very specific PC audience.
- It feels like a PC game, it follows many of the traditional rules of PC (not console) RPG games.
- The access to mods and third-party programs, of course.

And I played Morrowind for 3 years on Xbox before I ever got it on PC, and I loved it. So I am not just being a PC elitist.

Also. like I already said... Which studio is going to remake Morrowind for you? Who is going to buy the rights, gather a team of Devs, and spend all that time recreating an old game (that the modders have already recreated) just in the hopes of a few dollars?
I bet no studio would take that gamble.

That's fair enough man, the whole point of the poll is to find people's opinions. Do you really think it would be a big financial venture? It would be digital so there would be no physical costs and all we're talking about on a developer costs is doing the same as what modders have spent their own time doing for free on the PC. So maybe a team that already has ties with Bethesda like Obsidian or Ubisoft may even still own some rights for the Xbox and they'd be interested in getting one of their many developers to do it. Morrowind is still available on Steam so if people liked it on console and fancy playing it how it is meant to be played on PC with mods they could then get it off Steam, it's all money for Bethesda at the end of the day.

I havn't got or intend on getting a Vita but it would be cool to see it going on new platforms.

It's not that I'm bothered playing older games (Doom I/II are still played all the time hehe), I'm just worried that an 8 year old original Xbox title ported to the 360 is going to be a buggy / glitchy / untextured mess.

I'm not someone who is bothered by a games graphics per se, but if it is completely to the detriment of my enjoyment of the game, then I'll give it a miss.

I think everyone agrees the backwards compatibility version is rubbish on the 360 which is another reason for a remake in my opinion. I think the problem is a lot of people on the Morrowind forum especially are PC gamers and kind of assume everyone else is. These days there's so many different ways you can access the internet you can't just assume everyone has a PC, even though I do have a PC that is capable of playing most game I usually read forums like this on my phone, the Bethesda forums work very well on iOS.

I'm not sure I understand the point of creating a new remake thread every week when there are several recent remake threads you could just comment on instead.

I'd love to see Morrowind on a more stable engine with better graphics. But the MCP and mods pretty much take care of that for me. If Bethesda had to dedicate resources to remaking Morrowind, it would just slow down their efforts on Fallout 4, Skyrim DLC/expansions and TES VI. Is that something I want? No.

A remake? Nah. We have Morrowind along with the all the mods (fixes, gameplay additions, graphic overhauls, etc).

Now, a game RETURNING to Morrowind, after the Red Year occurs? Absolutely. I'd love to see Obsidian get a chance at a TES spinoff, like they did with New Vegas (which I personally think was brilliant, especially in terms of story and characters). It's also been forever since we've had a spinoff (Redguard was the last one I believe, unless there was something for phones that came out) so I think it's high time for one.

Why yes I'd love a non-modded inferior looking (to modded) with a poor control scheme version I could play $50 for.

I've said for years that someone should remake morrowind with updated visuals and whatnot. God I miss that game so bad. One of the best of all time.

I don't know about that but if they released it on marketplace I would buy it simply because they make games more compatible when they do that. Morrowind as it is runs terribly on 360, have to play on the old X-Brick for that.

No just stop what your doing. Obsidian is only good at ruining sequels and I know for a fact Bethesda won't let them harm the good name of TES.

KOTOR 2 was much better than KOTOR 1 in many regards, which is amazing given that they were initially only given a year to make the game, and then LucasArts basically chopped three months off that because they ran out of money. The finished product was buggy and obviously unfinished. But the story had more depth. Dialogue was better.

NWN 2 is LIGHT YEARS better than the snooze-fest that was NWN.

FNV is much better than FO:3.

I haven't played DS3, but everyone says it is again LIGHT YEARS better than DS1 and DS2.

I've never been able to complete FO3 GOTY edition even with community patches because it crashes constantly for me, but I was able to complete F:NV. I didn't play the game at launch, but I heard there were some pretty nasty bugs. Sadly, that is standard for most Gamebryo engine games, which is precisely why I'm holding out for the GOTY edition of Skyrim. Once F:NV was patched, I didn't have a problem with it.

Arena, Daggerfall, Morrowind, Oblivion and FO:3 are famous for being buggy messes. If you're suggesting that Bethesda can be trusted to make bug-free games and Obsidian can't, then I don't know what to tell you.

Return to III - Morrowind
