Would you buy an HD texture DLC?

Post » Thu Dec 15, 2011 2:26 am

Nah, community does it better.

Well said.

I installed a HD texture mod from the Skyrim Nexus site last week. It really makes the game look amazing without any noticeable performance hits. No need to wait for one, or pay for it.

If it was 10 bucks sure, but that still doesn't make much sense since I payed 125$ for the freakin CE... (and I do find the texture resolution pretty disappointing on my new 30" 2560x1600)

I paid for the game once, collector's edition at that. I am not paying them more to get the things that should of been in it from start.

What does this have to do with hardware/software issues?

Absolutely not. New textures are not pay for content.

Ever since the announcement of the Steam Workshop marketplace, I'm starting to think that Bethesda may have shipped with crappy textures for PC in part because Xbox non-competition agreements, but also so they could charge us extra money for use created content that we currently get for free on Nexus. It doesn't really piss me off a much a it should, since I think this will encourage people to make even more spectacular mods through competition and the profit motive. It's kind of funny, because I don't really consider myself to be a capitalist pig.

no, the game was a bit rushed, some of the LOD were not done correctly, especialy in windhelm

this got nothing to do with texture size. skyrim is a modern game and depend more on shaders and special stuff like displacement maps and anisotropic filtering. but some models dont seem to have proper lod when seen up close.
you will understand if you go to windhelm and look at a wall.
the stone CLOSEST to you look FAR WORST the the next one a bit further away
that s not a texture problem !!!! because then it would get worst the further away it gets

Microsoft CANNOT impose a clause prohibiting quality content on pc, they would face a massive lawsuit the day any such agreement is discovered
ever heard of anti monopoly laws....

There is clearly a problem, it also appear in whiterun to a lesser extent. I have not seen it much in solitude and markath
Its possible its indexing the wrong mipmap, that something is wrong in that regard

Since most oblivion mods used outside content (poser, morrowind)
and skyrim mods already use outside content,
mods for profit would create a lot of turmoil .... and bad blood
not sure it s a good idea

possibly dungeon mods would work best, using no outside content, or only original content done by the artist himself without external ressources
(most free ressources on the web, if not all, have a non profit clause, same goes with free tools)

Why the hell would I pay this company for something other companies release for FREE?

Oh, and don't expect the main modders to be anywhere near the "Steam Workshop"but on Nexus where they aren't confined by Beth/Steam rules.

It is entirely optional to use the steam workshop, you can still use the nexus, so I don't see this as a possibility. Besides the community has already created http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=2146.

Why would I pay for HD textures when I can get them for free with mods?

There's already a lot of great texture mods that increase the textures to 2048 and even 4096.

The textures that really need higher res are the furnitures. Seriously have you seen those ridiculously low res cabinets/tables/chairs/drawers/etc?

http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=238 is the mod I speak of. Seriously if you think skyrim is fine as is ( And it is in a lot of areas except what I said above ), then you owe it to yourself to get this mod to make it complete :D

No way. I don't think there's any doubt that modders have far more talent (and available resources) with textures than Bethesda's graphics guys. Think about it, thousands of modders working for free, probably stealing copyrighted images for their textures, or Bethesda's 2 or 3 subpar untalented graphics guys soaking up a paycheck that they barely deserve trying to churn out an HD pack. It'd take them years and would still be ugly.

The community is always going to make better textures.
Even if the texture is really good, the community will improve it.

I see no reason why a PC game should not come with textures scaled for PC resolutions in the first place. I certainly will not pay extra for something that should have already been come with the game. What comes next? Maybe paying for patches? "New-Patch-DLC"?
