After the "simplifications" that OB made to the series, and the so-so "improvements" between that and the indirectly related FO3 (same engine, similar game mechanics), I'm going to hold off on purchasing the next installment in the series until I'm reasonably certain that the game isn't just a mindless "hack and slash" title.
There are a number of regular posters here whose opinions would heavily influence my decision, and if they like it, I'll "bite" and shell out for it; if not, then I'll just have to continue to play MW until some other company releases a better game (and I'm really getting kind of tired of it after all these years).
When FO3 was released, I posted that I wouldn't buy it unless a CS was released for it. After that was released, I bought the game with the hopes that mods would be able to fix any serious flaws. Sadly, the fundamental game isn't quite to my liking: most of the character's attributes (abreviated as "SPECIAL" in the FO series) were almost irrelevant to gameplay compared to the "twitch" skills of the player. Another related and underlying problem appears to be that Bethesda wants to make every encounter an "epic struggle", even against basic wildlife. In Morrowind, most of the starting creatures were relatively easy to deal with, once you figured out the basic game mechanics, and 2-3 successful hits would kill a Rat or Mudcrab. In FO3, it took 5-10 bullets to kill a basic Molerat; a pipe or baseball bat was much more effective than a gun at the start. The fearsome Supermutants of the earlier FO games became just more of the same "generic" baddies like the Molerats, and no harder to kill, since the level of difficulty in FO3 was relatively "flat" throughout most of the game. Without MEANINGFUL use of character skills and attributes that have an effect on the completion of actions (and not just nerfing damage), it wasn't all that much more than a basic "shooter" game. After roughly a month to month-and-a-half, it got shuffled to a bottom drawer where it sits. Meanwhile, the old MW disc is still getting used on at least a weekly basis. I have no reason to buy another game to join the FO3 and OB discs in that drawer.
