Would you date a stupid person?

Post » Wed Sep 15, 2010 9:42 am

Stupid people are not fun for very long, and depending on how stupid they are it can affect my level of physical attraction to them significantly. Now, I'm talking about vacuous, ignorant people here. They may or may not have actual potential for intelligence. That's pretty hard to gauge...I think that regardless of actual intelligence people can be interesting and lovable, and there are a lot of different types of intelligence that may or may not translate into conventional scholastic ability. It's just the lazy, empty-headed, willingly ignorant people that are tedious, and those come in a wide variety of intelligence levels.

One of the girlfriends I mentioned earlier, I let her borrow my car to use. The second time she uses it, she was going 80mph in a 55 zone. Got in a crash, the car was completely FUBAR, she walked out without a scratch. She came back to me with the sad face and trying to make it up to me, yadda yadda. I made her pay me the money (her parents had to). She got mad and we were done. After that I kind of wished she were the one that got FUBAR and the car was left without a scratch. Nice little Miata that was. >.>

I didn't date her but there was this girl in my philosophy class that had no concept of sarcasm

In some ways that made it more fun but most of the time it was a buzz kill

Couldn't do it. I'd like a significant other capable of having intelligent conversations with. I'll admit I find intelligence to be pretty sixy in a woman.

Being able to recall the names of political leaders isn't what I'd call intelligence - in fact I'd probably find someone who was very detached from that sort of knowledge, yet able to perceive and reason powerfully, to be very attractive (intellectually). Perhaps your definition's more accurate, though, and what I'm looking for is wisdom. Or madness; it's not healthy to see too far.

Sorry, I probably didn't put enough info. He was on a date (I think blind, or speed dating or something), and the woman asked what his interests were. He said he was really into politics. She was surprised and a bit impressed, and asked him various questions, and it turned out he knew absolutely nothing. She ended up asking him who the current PM was and he didn't know. It was more the fact that he lied so obviously in conversation and got caught out so awkwardly that made him look really stupid.

One guy said he was into politics and then had to admit that he didn't know who the Prime Minister was.
Maybe if that was filmed last May he'd have had a valid excuse. :P

Ah, that does make more sense. Thanks for explaining. :)

I recant my first post (to a degree).

But to the people who are disdaining "stupid" people, how much knowledge do you actually have?

I think that everyone has their own definition of "stupid." For me it has more to do with having an interest in understanding the world than actual intellectual ability. I've met very few people that were "stupid" because they weren't capable of more. It's typically because they are mentally lazy or see having an interest in knowledge as something that is unfashionable.

Well, I've done it before. It was pretty grueling and I remember feeling like I was becoming less intelligent because I didn't really have much in the way of mental stimulation. Lots of physical stimulation though. And boy was I heartbroken when that relationship ended.

I don't respect stupidity. If I can't respect a guy, then I wouldn't date him.

@Davor: read http://notalwaysright.com/ sites archives. That's stupidity right there. The kind of stupidity where the IQ is the same as their shoe-size.

Ah I see what you mean now.

So she is pretty and fun...but dumb, so its fun to hang out with her, but she says dumb things...or does she do dumb things? Also pretty and dumb don't really go hand in hand, some of the most gorgeous people i know are probably smarter than me, admittedly some aren't really bright either tho

Also what do you mean by stupid? like mtv stupid?

Bachelor #2

Spoiler
(April 2010, Romania) A thirty-five-year-old man from Braila was only trying to fix a broken soil tamper, a tool his father had made himself and used for decades. The metal handle of this family heirloom had rusted loose and our man was trying to weld it back into position, but unfortunately he was welding the metal rod onto an antique WWII cannon shell.
Yes, the family had been banging a cannon shell against the garden dirt for two generations!

Specialists from the Bucharest ISU (General Institute for Emergency Situations) stated that the first weld had been made in a harmless position, but the second weld was made in exactly the wrong spot. The heat triggered the shell to explode, mortally wounding the man. In his defense, he was sure the projectile was harmless because his father had used it to compact earth for almost 40 years.

Spoiler
(10 January 2010, Brazil) An electrical discharge made toast of municipal guard Arthur de Souza Coelho, 47, on Sunday evening. According to police reports, he had installed a tiny electric fence around his car to protect against the frequent robberies that occur in his neighborhood in Belem, Para. Then (direct translation from Portuguese) "he forgot that he had left the fence on and he ended dying with the electric shock."
After all, we are all dying, but some end sooner than others.

depends on the kind of stupid.

If they're:

1. uninformed, this is tolerable absent other factors

2. dull, as in they don't really do anything with information, can memorize but can't innovate. This is okay.

3. uninterested, someone who doesn't want to acquire knowledge. They can burn themselves.

4. Thick, must beat in information with hammer. Too frustrating.

Define "stupid"
Stupid as in academically challenged, man-sense challenged, or as in acts like a dingus?

it depends... intelligence isn't black and white, if she doesn't know how to read or write i wouldn't hold that against anyone, if she can't figure out how to plug in a USB port/plug then there might be problems

and i'd like to point out that intelligence doesn't really determine who the person truly is
