Would you like Beth to finish the "Van Buren" project?

Post » Wed Nov 30, 2011 12:49 am

I went through the project description of the Van Buren project and I think that this Fallout part would have been very good. I think that Beth should do some kind of old school game and use the graphic engine that was created for Van Buren because this engine was already completed 95%. Besides I still play F1 and F2 even though it has a really out dated grahic engine though I would buy this Van Buren Project game as well.

What do you think.

Sorry for my bad english

Two problems.

Beth had nothing to do with Van Buren.

Beth have already said they have no intention of finishing the work of someone else.

Black Isles laid so much of the ground work that Beth completing it may well result in a horrible clash of styles where you can clearly see where one developement team ended and another took over.

no, Sorry three problems.. etc (Haha, no one expects the Spanish Inquisition!)

I would like for it to be made, but not by bethesda. The original designers should work on it.

The problem there is that the original design team was broken up and spread to the four winds.

Some are at Obsidian who are making New Vegas, so we may see some of the ideas from Van Buran in NV. A couple are supposedly still at Interplay and were/are slated to be working on the Fallout MMO (assuming it goes ahead) The rest are probably with other companies.

I'd rather keep my dreams of what the game would have been like.

I think Bethesda should definitely do it, if only to rattle a few more cages and invoke some more message board chest-beating.

Heh, I doubt they should, their egos would probably make them change most of it anyway.

Leave it be. Van Buren was highly controversial when announced, due to changes made to SPECIAL and what I felt would be a rather empty storyline. It would be interesting to see Obsidian salvage some of their ideas however, since many of their developers used to work at Interplay and Black Isle.

J.E. Sawyer is heading the development of New Vegas, he was the lead designer of van buren. NV is set in the same region as VB. It's safe to assume NV is either going to be a revamp of VB or will at least contain locations and concepts that were intended for it.

Personally I liked the original VB concept where Presper was a preserved pre-war scientist from Boulder Dome and the focus on the origins of the New Plague and FEV.

It's not really the same region, it's just a small part of it, as New Vegas will likely focus on Vegas and its immediate surroundings. A remake of Van Buren would need much more time than just 1 year. They will likely feature or reference some VB characters and factions, though. Regarding the poll option, Van Buren simply cannot be "a part of New Vegas", nor a FO3 DLC, given that story-wise, it was much bigger than FO3.

Empty storyline? What have you actually read about it and where? In my opinion, it was much superior to Fallout 2 or Beth's Fallout 3, although still not as good as FO1. And the main storyline was certainly bigger than in any of the other games, including Beth's Fallout 3. And you do realize that Bethesda changed SPECIAL much more than the VB devs ever intended?

And yes, if anyone should remake Van Buren, it's the original developers (currently at Obsidian), not Bethesda.

I've only read the Fallout wiki synopsis, but the whole "good intentions, what has become of the world, let's begin society anew" thing was already done by The Master. I don't know. Fallout 1 is still my favorite game in the series of all time, and I think all the biological warfare plots were starting to get out of hand.

I feel that the Enclave's FEV Curling-13 strain didn't get enough story development in Fallout 2, though. In that regard I suppose Van Buren would've been more interesting than FO2's storyline.

Sure. I certainly wouldn't not like seeing it come out some day.

Realistically, yeah - it's not going to happen. There's been plenty of games over the years that I wished would have seen the light of day, but never will. Van Buren is one of them.

Good to see so many replies. I think that the story for VB was realy good. But unfortunaly I also think that Beth would be capable to do it in the same way Black Isle did it :nope:

I have voted for that the guys at Obsidian should be allowed the make Van Buren a part of Fallout: New Vegas. Or at least a small part of the Van Buren project could be included in the Fallout: New Vegas project.

I would personally like to see Van Buren be made into a game, made by Obsidian with the understanding that it might only sell between 50,000-250,000 copies, being like art movies compared to commercial movies. The audience and market certainly are there now for such games to at least break even.

I think you are underestimating the potential sales. Especially if it were published by Bethesda, with their hype machine.

I would only want it done by the original developers.

No one else.

Thats about all I have to say.

But if I ever saw Bethesda try and remake it , I'm inciting a rebellion. Leave the game in peace and all the tears and sweat along with it.

Just more focusing on your "hype machine" and "exclusive" additions to the series.............

Fallout 3 was better as a vanilla version. The new DLC content should have been auto-inserted into the game when it came out......

But either way, mods are a coming to save anything bethesda flops on, so they are safe, for now.......

Ahem, One gameplay video would be more than enough to drive off most potential buyers, as today's typical gamer prefers graphics that suit this age, not VB's outdated ones. Even then if updated, the gameplay would drive off more (turn based is okay) people as real-time games are much more interesting than

*Click*
You missed the target

*opponent shoots*
Opponent hits you for 12 damage.

Even if extremely overhyped, returns do not help sales.

I say, leave VB and Bethesda's next Fallout game will be much better, as they now know what does and deosn't work.

Funnier words have never been typed. But you're right though, modern gamers seem to have an aversion to isometric even with 3D as well as TB combat.

Tell that to the millions that will doubtlessly buy Diablo 3. I wouldn't be surprised if it caused a resurgence of pseudo-isometric view in cRPGs, actually.

as well as TB combat.

Tell that to Final Fantasy fans.

Sure, it might sell less than Bethesda's FO3, but it doesn't mean it would be a flop.

What makes you think that a modern Van Buren remake would have graphics like a 2003 pre-alpha tech demo? This is just silly.

That said, I doubt that Bethesda would want to publish a Van Buren remake anyway, so this is just idle speculation.

Doesn't FF use a mixed TB and real time system?
And no not quite a flop (I would buy it actually) I think it would end up like Psychonauts: A great game but with little attention. Or "flying under the radar"

Just a bit silly yeah, but how big was the game map going to be?(I heard it was supposed to be pretty big) Any way you slice it graphics would suffer some(limited disk space and engine limits) if a large map were used.
