Would you like Narration

Post » Fri Jan 07, 2011 9:59 pm

I know this won't be done because of the amount of time it would take, but if it could be done would you like to be able to open a book or parchment and hear the text being spoken and mabye even in the voice of the author ?

Or enter a cave or village and hear a quick narration describing it to maybe help feel like you are seeing/feeling what's there ? (like in dungeons and dragon online)

I think it would be cool but realize the time and cost of adding that probably out weighs the benefit. Could something like that be modded ?

Nope, unless the story of the game was that you had some sort of unseen spiritual guardian or the like that would maybe share insights as the game progresses. Even then it's a stretch and I probably wouldn't be in.

Uh.

I believe Morrowind had 1600 pages of book text, Oblivion had over 2000... We can assume Skyrim will have 2400... I'm guessing no.

Narration isn't really for TES. That belongs in less open-ended games like brown shooters or corridor RPG's.

But I wouldn't lay down and cry if Patrick [censored] Stewart was whispering sweet nothings into my ear again. No homo, but that man is... Inspiring.

No. Narration for locations would instantly draw me out of the game. It wouldn't be as problematic for books but given the speed I read at I wouldn't be following it anyway so it seems like a waste of resources and disk space.

I wouldn't mind this in the case of books (only in the case of books!).

Isn't the point to discover things for yourself? Narration sounds like a more intrusive form of game compass. Also, I'm hoping for more ambiguity this time around. An all-knowing narrator would detract from that. A narrator with their own take on things would be a distraction.

I'd hate it to have a voice speak when I enter dungeons or any area.

But I'd love to hear the author reading the book.Really.

However, considering the vast amount of books in TES,I'm not sure if that could really be pulled off.

Nah.
It would be like that movie, Stranger Than Fiction.
While I'm walking through the city of Markarth, I don't want some British woman describing my every move and everything I see, or even think....

Besides, I'd rather see that disk space devoted to something cooler, like war horns or something. :toughninja:

Same with me.

I wouldn't mind in-game bards in taverns that recount old tales of bravery and heroism.

narration is stupid, even in films and tv shows. Let the audience/player figure things out.

They should be spending their time taking reading lessons, not playing videogames.

Why would toddlers be playing this game?

I say no. It would be so annoying to be chilling with a book while some stupid voice reads over what i'm reading while i'm trying to read it.

No.

The great thing about books is that you, you know, read them.

When reading you lay your own preferred inflexions and emphasis, when something is told to you its from someone elses perspective.

This is why a book is always better than a movie, and even a spoken book.
Because your own imagination makes things fit better for you personally than anyone else ever could.

This is also why Im not a fan of voice acting, but thats another story.

ugh no..

this is what killed the in-game encyclopedia in mass effect.

I felt quite insulted by it actually.

Hated the codex narration in ME, so no. I read faster than the narrator speaks, so it just gets in the way.

I liked the narration in Diablo for many books. But its not really something for Skyrim or TES in general.
