Would you be in a Mafia during its hay day (1910s-1970)

Post » Fri Feb 18, 2011 11:11 pm

So, Would you be in a Mafia during its hay day (1910s-1970)? By that i mean, would you want to? Who would you ally with (Frank Costello, Joey Gallo, Al Capone, 'Machine Gun' Kelly, John Gotti) if you had the chance? Im not talking about the Mafia we have today, or much less deal with. Im talking about the better Mafia! Those folk heroes, or villains people talk about.

Being of Irish decent myself I don't think I'd be allowed, but I don't think I could make a living killing people without a huge amount of remorse.

With a high probability of being murdered or put in prison for long time? Not really. I'd rather live my life without fearing a knock at the door.

Of course not, for 2 reasons (plus more).

1) They were dealing with illegal activities, murder and jail are certainly not fun aspects of that.
2) There were no video games back then :P

Well I don't know. There's an allure to it now because of all the mobster films and what not, but I'm sure it was a pretty dirty life to lead. I'm sure most teenagers think the life of a soldier would be cool after playing CoD, but ask any real life Marine or Ranger and I'm sure s/he'll tell you otherwise.

Having said that, if I were desperate I just might. However, I don't see how we can discuss this openly without admitting the will to do something illegal, which is against forum rules..

I'd probably try to make a profit smuggling some of our great Québecois wines and beers south of the border. (What were you yanks thinking prohibiting alcohol?)

Nope, because being in that "business", you almost always die in the end. Either the mafia itself kills you, or the cops do. However I do long to a Somali Pirate, but alas, that is a different story.

Hell no. Mafia of old is just romance for boys. It's never quite what it's cracked up to be, just like going to war. It's like dreaming of being a Vicking. They were not a people per say (according to a BBC documentary I don't remember the title), they were the Hell's Angels of those days, pirates, gangster.
All the portrayed "good" values of the mafia are never like that in real life, it is hell, danger and heart breaking.

no,

but I would like to have lived during that time, but as a cop, be the guy bringing those goons in.
as others have said Mafia has more or less always been a dirty and extremely dangerous job, granted being a cop at that time was also dirty and dangerous but at least you weren't living everyday with questionable morals.

No. Organized crime is responsible for more suffering and horror than the fairytales let on. It's not any different back then than it is now. They just dress differently.

No, I can tell that I'm not hard enough for it and most people, aren't cut out for it. I'm Italian so I probably could but it isn't anything close to the lifestyle I want. It may seem cool at the time but killing innocent people, watching good people get hooked on your drugs and beat downs aren't what I enjoy. I wouldn't want to be a cop either though.

What is this?! I am not in the Mafia! Nor have I ever been at any point of time! I am a perfectly law-abiding legitimate businessman. What are you insinuating? Are you gonna' keep bein' a wise guy with me? 'Cause if you are, I'll have to show you just how 'legitimate' and 'law-abiding' I can be. :stare:

This. Being a snappy dresser doesn't change the terrible things that these sort of people did. From an entertainment perspective, it's pure gold. Not so much in real life.

I do wish someone would make 1940s attire fashionable again.

My great grandma who immigrated from Italy during the 30's not sure why she came all the way out to Minnesota though :/ but since my mom's side of the family has strong Italian roots I, being young and able, would probably have been svcked into the "family buisness". Although, shooting cops and robbing places isnt for me, I much rather prefer to be the cop stopping the robbery and/or shooting the bad guy. But despite my Italian heritage I dont think any family members have been in the mafia or a member of any organized crime...well, they dont talk about it anyway :ninja: I do know for a fact that my great grandma's older brother was an Italian ww1 pilot and was a facist who was very close to Benito Mussolini during world war 2, his name was Gabriele D'Annunzio...not mafia related but I figured its worth sharing.

No, one reason why is because neither Italians, Irish, etc mobs wouldn't accept me in those eras (except the 60s, the start of the Cold War, or wherever state I'm in) because I'm African-American/Black and mafias won't promote you to any other higher ranks if you're a different from everyone else and second, I would rather go to war in the 60s since there's any video games... yet.

My family were too busy fighting the black & tans to bother with organised crime at the time.

I guess I could always funnel money to arms dealers if I was in the mob.

Possibly. It would have to be the Irish mob, though, since that's my heritage.

Being a bastard of alot of European places by blood except for Italy, I'd not be allowed as a made man, so no. That said, I'd be more an entrepenuer, if I could know then what I know now, I'd capitalize off it.

What's the matter with you? I think your brain is going soft with all that comedy you are playing with that young girl. Never tell anyone outside the Family what you are thinking again. Go on. -_-

I would. However I too am off Irish descent. So uh... if an Italian family would let me enter as the token Mick, I'd be up for it. The English 'mafia' though, Kray Twins, Charlie and Eddie Richardson, and Mad Frankie Fraser... scares me... so I'd go State-side, but not any organised crime here at its height. American mafia, yes... just for the togs.

I do wish someone would make 1940s attire fashionable again.

Seconded.
