Would you mind if your character had a voice?

Post » Sat Jul 09, 2011 11:10 am

I was playing grand theft auto the other day and I realized how much I appreciate how the character will talk and even insult your apponent in combat. I think that it would be cool if you could pick the base pitch of your characters voice so that they could sound somewhat the way you wanted them to. Also for people who do not like this feature, there should be an option to turn it off.

IMO, giving the PC a voice only works in games where the story is more rigidly defined and your PC is a specific individual, with a predetermined role to play.

I'd prefer it without altogether, take DA:O for example where the majority of the character voice options really grinded on me to the point where I stopped playing.

I HATE the idea of a voiced player character.

I decide what my character says and what s/he sounds like saying it - not Beth.

I would hate it. Absolutely HATE it.

As far as vital features of the series go, i'd rank having a voiceless character right up there with first-person gameplay and an open world.

Here is what Chris Avellone, Lead Designer on Fallout New Vegas who has also worked on Fallout 2, Fallout: Van Buren (the canceled Fallout 3 by Black Isle Studios) and compiled the Fallout Bible has to say on this matter:

"I don’t usually care for games that give my character a voice – that’s my only comment. I think it works sometimes (Mass Effect), other times I feel it ends up being extraneous and a waste of time… although it all depends what type of “role-playing” you’re doing. If you’re role-playing a specific character (which may sound strange in the context of “role-playing”), then voice is fine and great. If you’re allowed to build and customize your character, I prefer no voice."

They couldn't do it if they wanted to. 500mb per voice. = 10GB of voiceovers.

not in the elder scrolls i wouldnt no, i thought the same question when fable 3 announced the hero was going to have a voice but i didnt mind in fable because it was more story driven than world driven.

I'd rather they didn't, as it may color my choice of acceptable races to play. For example, in Oblivion I tended to play Altmer, but I hated their male voice in NPCs. If I had had to listen to that voice coming out of my own character during play, I couldn't have played an altmer at all.

I'd mind. I'm hard to please with voices and voices are hard to customize. Doubt it would be worth the time/money to implement well.

I would totally mind. It's best that they leave your character's voice to your imagination... that way it feels more like the character you had in mind. If you created a character with a specific personality, dialect, and tone in mind, to hear your own character be portrayed with the voice of some actor would really clash with what you imagined. That being said, grunts and dragonshouts (which aren't even English) are fine, because they don't reflect any dialect or personality... since they're not even your character's spoken language.

They've already said that there are no voices for characters only "grunts" and "dragon shouts".

Even more
Choice of 5-6 voice packs for each race/gender
20*5/6= 100/120 voices
(p.s. mathematically this equation makes no sense I know)

and yeah, won't happen

This about sums up my feelings on this matter.

I would prefer if he didn't, I'm a fan of the silent protagonist approach. If they get the voice wrong I'll have a hard time connecting with my character

If my Character Only Voice the Shouts, then thats fine, but i would still like it Optional or have a Mod shut it up if your Species Character sounds Annoying.

Should my Character Speak, NO.

No I don't want my character to talk. The silent protagonist route has worked for decades not just for TES but for other games like Chrono Trigger/Chrono Cross and the Zelda series. This isn't broken and doesn't need to be fixed. Spoken dialog could easily misrepresent what you intend for your character to say.
