Would you be offended by a WWII game

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 11:14 am

I always thought it would be interesting to play a WWII game from that perspective but I always figured nobody's made a game like that yet because people would be up in arms about a game where you got to play as a Nazi or Japanese soldier or whatever the Italians were in that war.

Fascists.

Not in the slightest. I am always very annoyed by games where you only play a US marine/ranger/paratrooper/whatever more powerful than Master Chief in an OMG AMERICA RULEZZZZZZ KILL THE EVIL NAZIS!! type of game. Thank the gods for games like Company of Heroes and Battlestations Pacific.

For the Emperor!

I wish they could at least do it with some sci fi game. Like Killzone. I mean the hellghast are pretty much some obscure verision of Europe in that, looking like Nazi German Soliders, speaking English and using French weapons.

I'd like to see a well made (Let me shout this, WELL MADE. Like, on par with the Call of Duty series or the Battlefield series.) WWII game where to assume the position of a Nazi soldier. Perhaps split the campaign between the pacific and Europe. I could imagine a mission where you're a Japanese soldier on the verge of being captured and having the choice between killing yourself or letting yourself be captured.

But I've been told my taste is rather...Dark. So that might be a touch too far.

Actually, I would prefer some more games where you side with the Germans. I've seen things from the allied perspective enough to want some variation. And it wouldn't offend me the slightest, playing a Nazi or not. We've gotten to play as soviet more than a few times, no? And I don't see why war crimes would suddenly be portrayed if you played as a German. And I'm mostly thinking about FPS games when I say I want variation, Hearts of Iron etc has been good enough when it comes to picking sides.

I wouldn't be offended, but I still wouldn't play it unless it offered something new to the FPS genre!

It really wouldn't surprise me if they included something.... on the side like that. Hell, we got to shoot up an airport full of civilians in Modern Warfare 2, you can't go much more controversial than that.

Which I might add, didn't offend me at all. I unleashed my inner psychopath and I shot the crap out of that airport while laughing like a maniac :P Why? Because it's a game.

If it's a shooter that's enjoyable for more than 5 minutes, then I don't care who I'm playing as. So far Bioshock and Half-Life are the only shooters that have kept me entertained past the first hour.

Let's see, games that I own in which I've played Axis players:

Panzer Leader (tabletop)
Panzer Blitz (tabletop)
Squad Leader (tabletop)
Advanced Squad Leader (tabletop)
Command Decision (micro armor)
Jagdpanzer (micro armor)
Airforce (tabletop)
Fighting Steel (naval computer)
Fletcher Pratt's Naval Wargame (naval mini's, floor)
winspWWII (Steel Panthers, computer)

Who wouldn't like to command the Yamato, sit like a pillbox in a Tiger II, smash an enemy armored column with your infantry in the Italian mountains? Ya, it can be fun to play the Axis powers

Edit: folks might want to check out wargamer.com for some other computer games if interested. Many games exist in the strategy genre where you can play many nationalities. Winspww2 (Steel Panthers) is freeware much like a computerized Avalon Hill game. Many different countries and scenarios in that one.

Why would you be offended to play as the axis? In a WW2 multiplayer game somebody has to be the axis otherwise it would end up being allies vs. allies which may offend more people.

i think it would be even cooler to have an alt reality where huey long won and you where a us solider who went to help the germans
or to have a game as you being a German or Japanese guy and you won the war

Because there's no actual storyline/backbone to multiplayer 99% of the time. No interesting dialogue or scenes or anything, just alot of "ENEMY SPY PLANE INCOMING", etc.

Dunno what to vote. I wouldn't be personally offended, I just think the game would be in bad taste. Either the game glosses over the most beastly and horrible aspects, in which case the game makes light of the atrocities committed by the Nazis. Or, if everything is included in accurate detail, I'm not sure how someone playing the game wouldn't become sick to their stomach.

Most game companies won't make a triple AAA game based on the axis power. They could possibly offended some people & that's all it takes. That's why they NEVER mention the US nuking Japan. Most WW2 games end with the defeat of Germany.

Have you ever played a WWII game? There's literally hundreds were you can play as the Axis. Some strategy games were you can only play as the Axis.

Well, not every German soldier was stationed at a concentration camp, and not every bullet was fired securing camp boarders. Even tactically the German expansion into Russia is interesting. And without getting into to many politics, the Blitzkrieg was extremely effective; a similar indecent with the 6 (or 7) day war Israel led.

But as is said I am not sure what kind of story can follow those events...tastefully.
However if anyone is interested, from a purely tactical perspective, the Close Combat game does follow largely the Russian and German battles, with a bit of English and US involvement sprinkled in. RTS format, no bases or unit construction, but good war campaign trails. It is also a bit old at this point.

Valid comparison, I'm sure, but the irony is still there :P.

Battlefield 1942 let you play as Germany & Japan. The issue I'm having with this topic is that WWII happened 70 years ago and you're offended, while we have games covering the Iraq war which is going on as I type this.

There's no way I can sugar-coat this, but a game revolving around and in a concentration camp is something I am still hoping for.

Nope. I play company of heroes with gamgee, and I always play the wehrmacht all the time, and get the mightiest of all german tanks... The king tiger. His little shermans get peeled open like bananas. Same with the mighty MG42!

I think it would be interesting to play as Hitler or any despicable person living or fictional. There's no sense or fun in always playing the good guy. Wouldn't be offended at all, no matter who wanted to play as what, or what content was put in a game. If people don't want to play or see the contents of it they always have the option not to buy or play it.
