Would you be offended by a WWII game

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 4:50 am

No one ever seemed to ask the Russians, Germans, or Middle-Easterners if they'd be offended to be the universal evil bad guys and get shot at in every war game released over several decades. I wouldn't see much justification for anyone to say "well now it's not okay because it's MY ancestors, which is clearly offensive and wrong."

I think it would be interesting to play as Hitler or any despicable person living or fictional.

Well, I don't know how much fun it would be to play AS him. Press A to yell from podium, hold A to yell louder. Quarter-circle X to sign important documents. Trim iconic moustache minigame.

You'd be surprised. I distinctly remember games where you push buttons just to dictate speech or do things as simple as multi-step gym squats for a competition to get a dress for going drag, which while seeming completely dull might appeal to someone. ;)

My logic is this: we won IRL so IDC what happens in video games.

It wouldn't bother me at all.

WaW had Nazis... and Castle Wolfenstein... and TF2 (I'm fairly certain that the Medic is of German or Austrian descent).

You know what I'd really want? To play as the partisans!

Got part of my start in "gaming" back in the late 70s with hex-and-counter wargames/boardgames.

In all those games, someone has to play the other side. So, yeah.... I've played Axis forces in WW2, Confederates in the US Civil War, Soviets in WW3 (:D), etc, etc, etc.

In the case of a computer game, it would all depend on the context. If it were a game that was trying to be controversial/offensive/etc ("ok, this game is a concentration camp sim!" :yuck:), then, yeah - I'd be offended and wouldn't play it. But not just because it was playing "the bad guys".

I'd like a game where you play as the Japanese, and be focused on the story and your characater and stuff.

I don't see why it'd cause offense. I mean seriously, there's evil in every race, nationality, etc. Dwelling on it isn't good at all, but remembering it isn't an injustice. Of course a game with these themes could be offensive, depending on how it's made. But that goes for any type of game.

Are you saying you want a... Japanese-role playing game?
