Would you be offended by a WWII game

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 5:42 am

I always thought it would be interesting to play a WWII game from that perspective but I always figured nobody's made a game like that yet because people would be up in arms about a game where you got to play as a Nazi or Japanese soldier or whatever the Italians were in that war.

Mussolini was Hitler's [censored].

And there's lots of games that allow you to play as Axis powers. What I want is a game that focuses on alternate histories if you choose the Axis side and they win and the outcome of that.

It would be more realistic. Also, it would have to stick to battles. No "extra-curricular" activities.

I think they were Italian.

Also no, not offended. Perhaps annoyed by the existence of yet another WW2 game.

Why would you want to play the side that lost?

Unless you did a game where the past was altered and they won, which would be cool.

I want to play the Finish during WWII. Or some other minor army that fought, axis or non axis. I would not be offended.

WWII wargames often let you play either side. If it was an FPS or something similar then it could be very awkward. The Italian fascists are probably the safest bet, while there were a number of WWII related Italian war crimes (particularly involving their colonial expansion in Africa before the War) they aren't as well known as the Holocaust or Bataan Death March. This isn't to minimization atrocities committed by the Italian fascists, but given that they aren't well known it would be easier to use them as a base in a game like this.

Of course if the game involved the Italian conquest of Ethiopia then it wouldn't work.

The more obvious solution would be someone who switched sides: you could start as a member of the Axis, witness some atrocity, and then switch sides. Of course this defeats the purpose of playing on the Axis' side but I suppose it depends on what experience you're going for: prolonged gameplay with you as part of the Axis or an entire game with you as part of the Axis. The Winter War (I believe that's the one) with you playing on the Finnish side would let you do this as well if you want something larger than an individual/group switching sides. The politics involved in this would be wonderful, I'd love to see it myself.

I would rather them not make any more WWII games any more. It was good for the time they first came out until now, but I think they have really really beaten it to a pulp. I know there is a lot more missions that games could cover, but I am WWII worn out.

It really depends on what you would do as a member of the Axis. Bein' on their side durin' a battle would be no big deal, but what they did outside of the fights was [censored] up. I'd like to see more island combat, too much is focused on fightin' on the European Mainland.

Ha, great minds think alike :)

Although apparently I was wrong about the Winter War, I actually wanted the Continuation War which . . . well continued it. :)

By in large I agree with you, I remember a Penny Arcade comic from years noting that there were way too many WWII games and this was actually before the recent surge in them.

However there are a number of events in WWII which aren't well covered.

Oh, I just realized the obvious solution for a WWII game with you on the Axis side: have the player be part of Rommel's campaign in Africa.

You can play in many games as the Russians, what is wrong as being able to play as the Wehrmacht? Hell. You can play as the RAF in some games, what is wrong with the German Air Force?

The more obvious solution would be someone who switched sides: you could start as a member of the Axis, witness some atrocity, and then switch sides.
When we were creating firestorms in Dresden, Hamburg etc?

I dislike the idea that one side is any less guilty that the other. The Wehrmacht soldiers were doing their job, fighting for something that they believed in (Their country). Until near the end of the war, they weren't pro Nazi and it was only when the Hitler youth came through that it changed.

In principle, I don't have anything against it. Specific examples may be distasteful, though.

Even a game from the point of view of an unrepentant SS true believer could be interesting. There's obvious stuff that I would expect (in a good way) to see only as cutscenes and the like, though. Unfortunately, it would be very hard to pull off.

Yeah, and I get the impression that front doesn't get much attention. But I don't keep track of World War Two games, so I may be wrong there.

I still want to some more WW1 games. Sure, the guns weren't so exciting, and some areas consisted mostly of jumping out of trenches and getting shot to pieces, but it needs more representation, dammit! :P

Yeah, in my spiel above, I left out any mention of the SS for obvious reasons. (In that imho many in the SS were evil bastards)

I find the idea of fighting alongside the Desert Fox in Africa to be very appealing.

Nope not at all. I prefer to play as Axis.

Given that loyalty to Hitler was one of its prerequisites, and they were charged with enacting certain well known policies, that's pretty much a given. And half of why it could be interesting, if done right.

But then, I suppose pretty much any premise could be interesting 'if done right' :P.

it would be cool if they made a game on how you were loyal to the SS but recent events cause you to join conspirators to kill hitler and you succeed telling an alternate history. just saying.

Maybe a game sorta like CoD 3 where you're constantly switching between the U.S, British, and Canadians, but instead your switching between Axis powers or small countries defending their homes against the advancing enemy(Mainland Europe)?

You know to give a better view of the war instead of constantly storming Normandy or attacking Berlin.

I see mannnnnnnnnnnny games that let you play as the IJN or the Italians. BUT if they make a game about Germany, you get protests and boycotts.

I never said that atrocities weren't carried out by both sides. However even a game where you played a German soldier at the front rather that someone involved in more unseemly activities is going to have some serious image problems - when you really take a measured look at the situation there may be little reason this game is treated different than one where you play for the Allies but in terms of practicality image is important.

Yeah, and I get the impression that front doesn't get much attention. But I don't keep track of World War Two games, so I may be wrong there.

I don't keep a close eye on them either. From my understanding most of them either involve the US, France, and or UK in Europe or the US in the Pacific - not all mind you, and actual war games tend to have far more spread in terms of the sides you can play and what regions you're playing in.

I still want to some more WW1 games. Sure, the guns weren't so exciting, and some areas consisted mostly of jumping out of trenches and getting shot to pieces, but it needs more representation, dammit! :P

In terms of history I find WWI the far more interesting conflict but you're right about the difficulties in making this work - trench warfare in particular would be extremely difficult.

There is (atleast) one strategy game that focuses on winter war (by a russian developer no less :hehe:) called "Talvisota - Icy Hell", but i haven't played it personally.
