Would you want flintlock guns?

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 8:14 am

If you don't know what a musket is the gun used in the civil and revolutionary war. A flintlock weapon is a weapon using flint to make a spark to light the powder. Ok to the point the guns would have more power than a bow but less range (unless using specific kinds). You would also have to load them the normal way and a max of 3 shots a min if your ok. Also they would in a larger number hide u in smoke to get a head start (in poorer light and woods and rocky spaces). The band would startle people and for peasants slow them down for like 3 sec in fright. You would need powder along with bullets. For realism you need a ramrod too. You should be able to duel wield a pistol in inventory it should tell u if it is loaded.

Sorry for the long post. I am for option 4.

But why not? Please explain your point dosent the way I explained it seem ok enough for it to be balanced out? That and I would like it it should be optional though.

Okay, I'll bite.

What's the point of guns when you can shoot a fireball out of your hands? Or lightning? Or Ice? Or any number of horrible things?

The guns issue has been done to death, AFAIK.
I'm not against it for lore reasons, I am against it for reasons of gameplay and because I feel like the series doesn't need them.

The argument just presented "fireball duh, no need for rifles" is completely idiotic and only goes to provide more problems than possible answers.

"Derp, why make guns when we have fireballs?"

"Derp, why make bridges when we have levitation?"

"Why have metal and leather armor when we have shield spells?"

"Why make swords when we have bound weapons?"

"Derp, why ride horses or invent the wheel when we have fortify speed and feather?"

And so on.

Magic is not an answer for why guns should not be introduced. Stop using that argument. But I am on your side for other reasons.

From a 'living, breathing universe' perspective, guns would never have been invented or used. Because it's not earth. The timeline and history between the two worlds. By TES X, we will not have machine guns and grenades. Simply because there is no need for them. A gigantic fireball is far more impressive and practical and useful than a gun, so why use them? And why even invent something to replace something that does not need to be replaced, with something far less useful than the thing it's replacing?

And from the 'it's just a game' standpoint, guns are stupid, cod and fallout and fable can keep them, let's keep TES a medieval fantasy game.
Just my opinion, though I hope and assume that plenty of people share it.

Magic is no reason why guns shouldn't be in the series. The reason they shouldn't be in the series is because we (generally) don't want them.

Yeah! Why invent boats when they have water walking spells? Why have stairs when there are levitate spells? Why have beds when there are restore stamina spells? Read what PeteAtoms said.

Then perhaps you could enlighten us with a better reason?

Also, there's no reason to call someone's intelligence into question just because you disagree with them.

Perhaps you should try giving a good reason why they need to be included?

I don't suppose it would be a bad addition to the game. But lore-wise it wouldn't exactly fit right because the story is based mainly on magic and swordplay.

However, as Fable demonstrated, firearms can be successfully incorporated alongside melee weapons and magic. (Im not comparing the two games, don't freak)

As for wanting them in the game. Yes.

Shut up with the [censored] magic and fireballs. Maybe someone can't use magic or they are not good at destruction magic. Or they don't like magic redguards hate all magic. Also mabe your like me and don't use magic because you don't like it? The only games il use magic in are WoW and that I can't play because I can't pay for it. So stop it with why use it we have magic bull [censored].

I'm not going to invent a reason for something that comes down to being a matter of taste.

Only if it took a super hard quest line to get it, there was only one, and if it was balanced right. I'd like it as an Beth's personal easter egg to all the threads about guns not anything serious.

Yes, haha, he posted his annihilation of my argument while I was writing it :P.
I suppose I was just trying to defend something that I really don't want in the game, without applying the argument to all aspects of the game. My bad.

IMO, guns have been done to death, and there really aren't that many good purely medieval fantasy games out there. I guess I can't really explain it, but I am extremely opposed to any sort of gun being in TES.

I don't believe they fit the series and are more of a Fable(which is more outlandish/cartoonish/less serious) thing.

I don't want them simply because it takes away from the romanticized Fantasy feeling, in my opinion. We already have an open-world, Bethesda game with guns. It's called Fallout 3, and there will be more to come. One of the few things truly separating the two series are the settings. They don't need to be closer to one another with the addition of guns in TES series, in my opinion.

I think muskets are awesome it may be a crappy idea I do not know. But at the moment I think it is a good idea. I may hate it and if its optional turn it off.

To the poll and thread:

I don't want guns or firearms in the game simply because I feel like it would alter the feeling of the in-game world to the point I would enjoy the fantasy a little bit less. It is a matter of taste IMO and I feel like the general consensus is that firearms just don't fit the feeling or ambiance the game is supposed to convey to the player. The highly subjective nature of this however will always mean you will find like-minded individuals that would welcome firearms with a smile, but from what I have seen, this does not represent the opinions of the majority (there is no right or wrong answer to the poll, but you will find that there is a majority opinion).

Guns of any sort don't really belong in TES universe, but if they were to put one in this is how it would best be implemented.

Nah. Tamriel just wouldn't be the same if firearms are invented.

Firearms change technology. They change how buildings are structured, they change how wars are waged, and they change in some aspect how cultures think and approach politics.

I love the tamriel where the traditional weapon of the blades is a Dai Katana. Where swords, magic, axes, spears, bows, crossbows, and such weapons are all the populace has to defend themselves. Well, thats must how I feel. Not saying I hate guns or that its an entirely bad idea. Just saying I love the elderscrolls where they're at right now. The eras may change, but it will always be a medieval flavored setting.

Muskets are slow and cumbersome to use. There would need to be three minute loading animations for each shot. It's not like sliding a magazine into a slot you know.

The only race of mer that would have bothered with the things up and vanished suddenly, likely winding up on another daedric plane. The appearance of guns as common weapons doesn't fit the lore of the elder scrolls. That isn't to say that a few artifacts left by the Dwemer couldn't be chemically actuated fire arms, just unlikely and undesirable to fans of the series.
