WoW Camera Style

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 10:00 am

I really like everything about Oblivion, except the camera. Frankly, it is absolutely terrible. RPG games are NOT meant to be played in first person. Leave that for the shooters. I could see why it could work with Fallout 3 and all that, but in an RPG like this first person is not the way to go. And supplying everyone with a terrible alternative 3rd person camera was also bad, as even the 3rd person camera retains its 1st person mouse style.

Does anyone know of a way to get a cursor into this game? That would make the whole game perfect. 3rd person "chase" camera, with a mouse that you can move all around the screen, not a crosshair centered on your character where you have to move the entire camera around just to select an object. Anyone here know what I mean?

I don't think there is any set particular camera style for one genre. I happen to like the first person view, one of the reasons I like Morrowind and Oblivion is it doesn't feel like a typical RPG to me, it's got a lot of the elements of one but plays out differently.
RPG's set in third person view are always about grinding and a very narrow skill tree and abilities selection.
I do hate the under water graphics though, I think Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas did very nicely with how water looks in areas. Like depending on the day or the spot when you jump into the water in that game the water has more of a green algea tint. Morrowind and Oblivion water is very difficult to get around swimming in to me.

I actually prefer the 3rd person camera Oblivion has. I haven't actually played WoW, but I have played DA:O and it's probably similar to Wow. To point and click to do actions, IMO, would be too cumbersome. Even in 3rd person.

This. The camera and auto-attacking by clicking once are the main reasons I quit WoW.

Totally disagree on that first point. There's no set rule that says RPGs must be played in 3rd person. I think the ability to switch between 1st and 3rd is a great feature. This IS a videogame, after all. Personally, I play in 3rd person most of the time (even during bow & arrow fights!) but the convenience of switching to 1st person is great while picking up items or trying to get a better look into the next room.

On the other hand, I agree with the 2nd point. I totally get what you're saying about the movable camera. In my case, I'm spoiled by the latest Tomb Raiders and Sims2, which allow the camera to rotate a full 360 degrees as the action goes on, and also allow the player to zoom in and out.

In oblivion you can zoom out and back in.

No you can't, not in the vanilla game. Oblivion allows the camera to rotate up and down above and below the character. It doesn't allow a true zoom-in. If you're walking, the camera is limited to following the character at all times. If you're sitting or on a horse, the camera now allows a 180 degree rotate (or therabouts) to the left and the right.

Pretty sure you can. It's scrollwheel over here, unfamiliar with consoleland, but I can't imagine the feature wouldn't be there.

You can using the scrollkey thing on your mouse.

You can zoom in and out in TES.

You can also have free camera movement using the game console. That's how many people take nice pics of characters and environments.

As for water, there are various mods for water for both Oblivion and Morrowind. MGE for Morrowind now has very good water effects without any other modding.
