Wow the graphics didn't improve from Oblivion at all

Post » Thu Jun 24, 2010 5:34 am

I mean I'm no graphics [censored] and I know Skyrim will be a great game. But from the mag screenshots, it looks almost identical to Oblivion.

I was expecting much better graphics especially since now we have open world games like Red Dead Redemption that have incredible graphics. But man this is disappointing, it literally looks like a sequel to Oblivion rather than a full fledged sequel. generally Bethesda games make a huge jump from game to game. I guess we'll have to wait until the next console generation for a truly next gen Elder Scrolls.

I think you're massively wrong, but there is a thread discussing it already:

I think that's right.

Game Informer. I'm just saying, didn't Todd say you would feel like you had a whole new console? Well those screenshots just looked like a normal Xbox 360 game.

 I don't see it... I only saw a massive change, and I could tell it was a huge improvement even from the crappy low-res scans I saw.

Okay look, this is simply not true. I'll just list a few things that I've already seen improved upon:

- A lot better lighting (less bloom)

- Dynamic shadows for every-god-damn-thing, this is amazing man

- Waaay better faces (yes!)

- as far as I can understand different body types (havent seen this myself)

- Flowing water

Hahaha, no. Really? I mean, really? No.

Oblivion is a visually hideous game. The terrain is made up almost entirely of large hills with fairy ugly trees on them, the characters look like horrific alien mutants, and the enemy designs are plasticky and generally just not that interesting. Absolutely none of those applies to Skyrim. Even if you meant on a technical level, it's very clearly got better lighting and shadowing, better water, and just all-around improvements. It's not entirely stunning, but... it looks almost identical to Oblivion? I mean... really, no. I'm one of the harshest people around here when it comes to the art in Bethesda's games, and even I have to call that out as completely ridiculous.

This.

I bet when they come out with some high resolution screenshots and a new trailer you'll see the difference. But yeah, I could definately already tell a great difference.

How much have you played Oblivion? Because Skyrim's graphics are a HUGE improvement from Oblivion, not that Oblivion's graphics weren't good for their own time.

It visually hideouos nowadays, but when it came out, that was some high quality stuff.

Obviously, it looks better than Oblivion, but it's not that impressive IMO. When I saw the first screenshots from Oblivion I was like - WOOOAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH. They were absolutely jaw-dropping, even if bloom was annoying at times. Same could be said with Morrowind, which had great graphics when it was released. I doesn't feel the same excitement in case of TESV. I also don't like the graphic style very much - looks a bit like classic fantasy. Generally, it's a bit underwhelming, while a month ago I was absolutely sure that graphics would be the least of my concerns in case of TESV.

Yee, I remember back before oblivion launched, my jaw dropped at the first few screenshots... But still, way way way too bright and bloomy (oblivion that is)

oblivion was made FIVE YEARS AGO, a game made in 2011 SHOULD look stunning in comparison!

I just think the "you'll feel like you're playing a whole new console" quote from Todd was a bit misleading. Yes, the graphics are improved from Oblivion a small bit. But it doesn't seem to have the graphical jump that happened from Morrowind - Oblivion.

Remember the game won't be completely polished yet... wait for the demo at E3 or something if you really can't see a difference now (although I'm with the other poster - only saw a grainy scan and I could see a difference).
