Writing novels?

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 4:51 pm

I would really like to share my story (don't have enough money to get it published) with all of the community, I just want to ask if that is okay. I'm guessing the answer is yes, but I don't see anyone doing it. So, yeah, I'm confused.

I don't believe there's anything against it in the rules, just make sure you can verify that it's your copyright, or someone might steal it.

There are plenty of ways to prevent it, although I can't think of any off the top of my head.

Well, what my novel is about is fantasy-ish, but it's not like, "Power blast!" or "I use my wand to kill you!" No, no, no, nothing like that. It's like Inception, complicated storyline and some fantasy aspects.

That's a short story thread, this is a huge 5000 word (possibly) novel/book.

5,000 words isn't huge at all. That's actually short-story length.

Five thousand words is a short story, albeit a big one.

I think the main concern that authors have about posting their work online is that in the future if they want to publish a much improved version, they still have that earlier draft floating out there somewhere on the interwebs.

If you are really concerned about your work being copied, you could

  • Post it and then edit your original post to delete it after a few days.
  • PM it to a few people
  • Post only the first chapter
  • Post it on a writer's website such as http://absolutewrite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8754 (these websites typically use passwords to prevent pages from being cached by Google)

I personally put out the prologue and 3 chapters, but my book was big enough I could share that much. I would put only a chapter out, two at most for something so much smaller.

There's a creative writing thread floating around here somewhere

There's also the artistry thread that also permits you to post stories as well (though I believe it's more geared towards artwork).

You can also make your own thread if the story is long enough and have people critique and peer review it.

Or you could just link to your story in your sig, put it in your profile, or just post it here. If its about a certain Beth medium you can post it in their RP/Fan-fic forum.

5,000 words is more of a novella than a novel.

But still, post it! :D

There are many cheap ways of publishing books for sale. Also, professional free sites to let you publish for free, but without return, mostly used by actual famous authors under alias for short stories.

I wasn't thinking, sorry. It's about 30 chapters long, not too short.

I've been told that mailing yourself the manuscript (printed and put in an envelope, stamped and sent with the postman back to your house), can actually qualify as a secure copyright. I suppose it wouldn't be considered a TRUE copyright, but I believe the idea is: As long as the package is left sealed, the postal service will have put official marks on the envelope that prove the date of production. Then if someone else takes your idea, you have evidence.

That's actually a pretty good idea.
