Wrye bash: Standalone or python-based

Which one is better? And why does it say on the nexus that one of the version is a python/standalone version? Does that mean you can use python with it, but you don't have to?

Standalone does not need Python installed .. Thats the only difference oh except you cant run standalone in debug mode I think.

294 Standalone and 294 Python based were both built from the same code so functionally neither is better than the other, they both have all the same capabilities which work the same way.

The Installer version includes both Python based and Standalone versions of Wrye Bash.
The archive version includes Python based but is a manual install, and you need Wrye Python 04a installed too.
The Standalone version is similarly a manual install. But doesnt need Wrye Python 04a.

Notes about the Installer:

Choose Oblivion and Standalone, but no Python options should just install Standalone.

or

Choose Oblivion and Python - Will install the Python version, but on the next screen it will ask if you want to install Python, just click next and dont put a check in the box because this bit is currently bugged and you still need to install Wrye Python 04a.

Notes about Python: Should you decide to go down the python route instead ...

If you have had a previous version of Python installed, fully un-install the previous version first before using Wrye Python 04a - Re-installing python, either over the top of the last one, or by using the python un-installer first .. can cause problems too.

Best procedure is to fully un-install python via the windows Control Panel, Porgrams and Features, Un-install a program

Once the list of installed programs is up, scroll down it and find all Python components (wxPython, Comtypes etc), uninstall each of them BUT leave the main Python installation until last. Then uninstall that. http://www.bild.me/bild.php?file=9634804WBTips-Uninstalling-Python.PNG

Now install WryePython04a (dont un-check anything, just yes, next everything), and let each part finish writing to your HD before going onto the next part (ie dont just quickly next next next)

Then using Wrye Bash 294 beta, check in the box for Oblivion, and Python - Next, on the next screen it may not recognise you have python installed (but you dont need it because you have just installed it) so click next.

When alls done, go to your Oblivion\Mopy\ folder, and find Wrye Bash Launcher, right click it and send to desktop for a convenient icon. Launch it.

I use both 2.6 (for pyffi) and 2.7 along. I have no problems so far. What "bad things" should I expect ?

You will be fine, its the un-installing of python that can be problematic. And you dont have to.

In topics like these where we have a user who is on unfamiliar territory, and may have tried multiple times installing and un-installing parts while swearing at their computer :brokencomputer: , they can make further complications for themselves.

So just in case I always give the best method of cleanout to ensure a new install is as flawless as can be expected.

For people who already have a stable python setup, with the required versions for Wrye Bash, its not a problem. I understand there are people out there with a need for other python versions to support software which needs an older version of python.

Thank you for clarification.
