WTF Has My Game Gone Mad?

WOW not this is one I have actually never experienced before. Lately I been having some random crashed which had been pissing me right off to say the least, and yesterday I worked out it was due to my GUP and clock speeds being set to high in my catalyst control centre and after dropping them down I have never had such a crash free play through, lots of combat, cell transitions, and travelling on the roads and in the wilderness I got roughly four hours straight gameplay no CTD and the last time that happened was when I first ever played the game.

Today however....well lets just say today's playing there ain't been none the game has been crashing literally every five minutes and I have no idea why, since yesterday I added a sword mod to the game (which I removed because of all this crap happening) I added the short grass mod because I was fed up of losing items in the long grass (which I removed because of all this crap happening) I removed textures for clocks of cyrodiil because I stopped using that ages ago and forgot to remove those (which I ADDED BACK because of all this crap happening) and that's it. My load order was changed slightly and I set that back to exactly how it was before this started...oh and I also added crowed cities for OCR which I wasn't to keen on so removed it and reverted back to the save just before adding it and also deleted some packages I wasn't using from the bash installer folder.

So everything is the same as it was when all was good but yet the game is showing me no love what so ever, I set the respawn time to 1day so everything can respawn to see if that helped and it didn't so I am completely stuck, I haven't tried the standard deactivate mods until it worked because I don't see how or why a mod would randomly start doing that when it was fine the day before. There has been no hardware changes no updates nothing so this might be a tricky one but I really really hope I'm wrong.

Additional info:

My game time is 228h and the file size is about 13,000kb and I just noticed the last crash (just before I started this post) was as a streamsave started and that file only made it to about 2,000kb

Because of your hours played you might want to double-check and ensure you are not suffering from the dreaded a-bomb. The bomb is traditionally associated with frozen graphics of various sorts (spell casts, torches, etc.) but I've seen it produce all sorts of odd behavior without a frozen graphic in sight.

Ha it was 17-18 once upon a time, I thought 13 was a common size actually...I'll give that a shot with just Ob.esm active as well but am still confused how a mod could (if that is actually what it is) just start playing up like that...quire worrying actually :ermm:

Revert to an older save when you knew the game was not crashing. Usually, I have noticed that if I continue crashing, it could be something was off in a particular save, and better to reload an older save to be safe.

OK so far with just Oblivion.esm active I didn't crash I used alternative beginnings to skip the tutorial and ran around for a while then ran from Imperial City to Leyawiin without a problem that was 29mins.

After that I used the repair Abomb function on a duplicate test save of my current game in the testing hall and coc to Bravil mages guild and using Pimpskinnys Druid mod transformed into a lion and ran from Bravil to Leyawiin passing a few on going battles and got there with no crash. I then continue on with a current quest I was doing and had to quit to find out what to do because I was lost, that lasted 38mins. After that loaded up again continues with that and started heading to Leyawiin again and it crashed and from he reload what lasted 17mins with most of it being indoors (but the crashing was happening both indoors and outdoors so that probably don't matter).

What makes it complicated is that the crash which happened I don't know if it's still related to the problem of the constant crashing or is the Abomb fixed it and that was just a random one so will keep going and post again.

That was the first thing I done as I did think it had something to do with the current save so I went back about 5-6 but it was still happening. Between say 820pm and 120am yesterday, I got 24 saves from straight playing with no CTD so those are the ones I been reverting back to and even with them it was all going pear.

Also: when you upgraded DLL last time, did you wait out the cell respawn time? I know the readme says you don't need to, but I've found it helps prevent frequent crashing.

No I didn't but I've just done a clean install of a ton of mods I'm using, DLL included, so I'll set the bash patch to 1day and wait it out in the testing hall now before I reactivate it.

Or did you mean wait the respawn time while DLL is active?

Yes. Rebuild your DLL patch, go in game, and wait out the respawn time. You don't have to rebuild the bashed patch - DLL is "outside" of its purview.

OK yeah I done that and things seemed to be playing okay last night and a little earlier on today I manage to get abut of gaming then all of a sudden it starts again, this really is weird one second it alright and then next it's not :brokencomputer: I tried without DLL active at all and still the same...oh one I forgot to mention as well when ever I was making any changes and had to rebuild DLL I was never deleting the current esp just building the new one on top of that, and last night I deleted it so a complete fresh one was made, might be coincidence but after doing that that's when it started to play okay so I've just done it again to see if it has any effect, though I doubt it seen as it still crashed a few mins ago without it even being active :sadvaultboy:

What was the MAX number of esm/esp and BSA allowed in the data folder was it 300 or 400?

EDIT:

Also I've just started using http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=39550 which allows you to play in fake full screen...any comments on that? I should add the game time I got to day when it didn't crash was only about 25mins I was using this mod, last night when it wasn't crashing and I wasn't using this it was from 1.03am to 2.55am so almost two hours.

Well now it looks like things has got even worse the game won't even load at al now, it gets to the loading bad and then just crashes and that's with all mods active, without them active just Oblivion .esm, and with just Oblivion.esm and a new ini...can't even make it to the title screen...seriously WTF is going on :confused:

If you're using a UI mod, you need to reinstall it if you deleted your ini file. It had font entries the UI mod needs.

The hard maximum on ESM+ESP+BSA files is 400, though the "soft" limit is somewhere between 300 and 400. It seems to vary somewhat.

This is just my opinion, but things like that "Game Companion" are snake oil. Placebo. It makes no sense that playing the game in windowed mode would improve performance. Logic suggests the exact opposite.

If you can get your modded game to load, waiting out the respawn time should have been helpful. Corrupt spawn points are insidious. They can come up anywhere, any time. When I ran into issues with a corrupt vanilla spawn on the road to Skingrad, I rebuilt my bashed patch with the respawn time set to 1 hour. Loaded the game. Waited 2 hours. Saved. Rebuilt the patch with the respawn option turned off again. The problem I was having cleared right up. Only reason I did things this way was because it takes FOREVER to do waiting in 24 hour chunks in my game. It is actually faster to rebuild the patch and reload the game twice than it is to wait out 73+ hours on the in-game menu.

Also, I would strongly suggest you reset your GPU clocks back to their original defaults. GPU overclocking is, IMO, another batch of snake oil. Especially with Oblivion since this game is bound up by the CPU instead. If you had those clock values up too high for too long, it is possible you've caused heat damage to the components.

You might also need to take a can of air and dust out the inside of your computer. You'd be surprised how much of a pain in the ass a little dust can be on the CPU and GPU fans.

Right the UI was the problem which was causing the game to not load, thing is I know all about that already and how it can cause problems but I didn'y even delete the ini I was using I just moved it for testing purposes...on top of that it actually started not loading before I had even touched it so things decided to randomly change of there own :confused: KMT well as least that's one step cleared.

I counted in my data folder a total of 306 esm,esp,bsa files, out of curiosity how many do you currently have in yours?

As for the game companion this is the first time I've actually used a program like this so I can't really comment on the positives/negatives but I can say when Crysis first came out and I was playing that I did select windowed mode from the game option and there was actually an improvement in the FPS of about 3-7. But yeah when it comes to using a program for that I can't comment.

The respwing I didn't even go that long ago (ingame) but will do it again see if it helps, I always have it set to one day when I have to do that i didn't even know you could set it to an hour thought a day was min, ha that will come in handy :)

I did adjust the clocks back to default because of the red spec dots I was getting ingame and it was after doing that I got the 4 hours straight play, when ever I was pushing the clocks up I did always set the far to 90% to keep the temps down as well but there back to normal now.

Ha I know all about how dist can be a bastard, I stripped my video card not to long ago actually to give it a good clean and put it back together, went from about 60 degrees idle to about 40-43 after that. I do always try to keep the case clean as well its the Antec 900 I got which in a dust magnet so is probably about time for a new case anyway.

OK I'm gona let the respawn happen and then see how it goes and report back.

Right just loaded and was in Bravil Fighters Guild (this is after the respawn) and came out and went to the travel woman to take me to Leyawiin got there and about 5seconds later it crashed so that lasted about 90seconds in total.

EDIT:

Crashing same place in Leyawiin after I use the travel service, lol and now for some reason (Arthmoor) should know exactly where I'm talking bout, when I arrive and you have the steps in front of you leading up to the city there is big gap there and when I try to approach it it crashed, tried on a new game and it crashed just as Leyawiin loaded. You guys are probably sitting there thinking ''what the hell is this guy doing'' but I assure you I ain't doing a thing. That gap wasn't there before and again no significant change has been made to my load order I've removed Lazysheepherd?EdsEngine?.esp and undercover.esp [Version 1.3] and replaced them with real thirst and TEF that's it...right about now this game has a mind of it's own :sad:

EDIT 2:

Sorted that one, cause of that was FF_Real_Thirst_Cobl.esp loading after Open Cities, it editing the wells was the problem. Something I don't understand though is when BOSS puts it there it's supposed to be my save games don't load hence the reason I put it after bash at the bottom then it was loading fine (I was also having that same problem with Trade and Commerce when I was using Better Cities) but then we had the problem of it causing land tares so shifted it just above Open Cities and it loads fine and no tares, also there was no CTD when arriving at Leyawiin from Bravil .

Got a different crash happening now, oooh this is so much fun :yes: :mellow:

When the settings in my ini was messed up for my UI it also set the video settings to default which I noticed just now due to trees looking a bit off so had a look and the texture size is set to medium, I changed it to large quit and reload and then it crashes on loading if I am outside, if I'm inside it loads but then crashes when ever I try to exit where ever I am and go outside but if I set the texture size back to medium they load fine :confused:

I'm really not far from just whipping everything to do with this game from my computer because this is getting ridiculous :verymad:
