WTF VSync bottlenecks load times, even with SSD

Post » Sat Nov 28, 2015 12:26 pm

Conditions:

  • No other programs running.
  • No mods.
  • Same save game being loaded.
  • Latest Nvidia drivers as of the time of this post.
  • Brand new Samsung 850 EVO SSD with only Fallout 4 on it

Results (averaged from 3 tests each for these cases):

Nvidia Adaptive VSync OFF

FO4 VSync OFF

14 seconds

Nvidia Adaptive VSync ON

FO4 VSync OFF

33 seconds

Nvidia Adaptive VSync OFF

FO4 VSync ON

40 seconds

I think these results make it pretty clear. The loading screen "spinning item" animation went MUCH faster in the first case.

Can someone from Bethesda please explain why the engine is designed in such a way as load times are doubled just because VSync is on (or more specifically, the frame rate being uncapped)? What's the logic?

EDIT:

Tested 9.5 vs 30 sec travelling from Red Rocket to Diamond City. No VSync vs Nvidia VSync

This is different from my first test as the game was already loaded and I was testing transition loading.

I've got one better. Running the game in Borderless Window mode also cuts the loading times in half. (Running off a SSD myself.) Loading times that were 30 seconds in Fullscreen mode are now only 8 seconds.

What the HECK is going on with loading times? How is loading done? And why is loading time so affected by seemingly arbitrary things?

loading screen seems giving some weird phenomena too, where the spinning items appears completely green. I run borderless too and iPresentInterval=0 with enb for framerate delimiter but I might have experienced with iPresentInterval=1 and no enb.

yes its true, use with iPresentInterval=0. makes game run a bit faster too. duno how amd driver acts but on nvidia if you have f.e. 1080p tv and want to play in 900p u need do change desktop res to 900p also

Running in Borderless Windowed has the same positive effect - cut load times from one minute down to 20 seconds tops.

I don't understand the fuss over loading times. 15-44 seconds? Either way that's setting the contoller down, taking a sip of beer, and going back to it

That is one hell of a long sip of beer.

After i changed my game from being hardcapped at 30 FPS my loading times now when i'm using a software cap at 71 FPS, i'm doing fine, all loadingscreens are fast.. anything from 2 seconds and ~10 seconds.

But if i dont cap my FPS at 70, but leave it uncapped, it'll spike between 140-2500 FPS on ultra... and this causes the game to malfunction in ways you cannot imagine lol

You get stuck in hacking terminals...

A lot of things in the game goes in fast forward, including lockpicking is so fast you break a bobbypin by only touching any button that has to do with lockpicking.

Btw about how Vsync affects loading times, will ofcourse have something to do with the proccessing of data, And this does not only have to do with your HDD or SSD, once the information has left your harddrive, it will be up to the GPU and the Graphic card RAM speed and Size to determine how fast it can proccess the data, and usually why it takes longer is to prepare a "visually" not very different product to your Human Eye... But for the computer, it is atleast twice the information to proccess.
