WTH happened to this genre?

Post » Sat Mar 22, 2014 4:54 am

When did it become "Role Playing" to play a role playing game for fun? Since when did playing a character you like vs the FOTM or best build make you a role player? Why does liking structured and story driven game play make you a role player now?

Seriously, 10 years ago, that's how everyone played, and the "Role Players" were typing in old english and creating fake narratives for their characters that were completely outside the scope of the game... Now just liking the concept of character classes vs "do it all entities" makes a person a role player? WTH is happening?

edit - I am in no way slamming role playing, I much prefer hard core RP'ers over hard core min/maxers. I am confused as to how the content rushing, quest text ignoring, loot gobbling weirdos have become the "norm" here.

You're a Vikings fan. I'm amazed you put a complete sentence together. O.o

Also, the people doing that 10 years ago were still laughed at, just as they are today. Also, games have become so balanced around min maxers, that role players have very little room to actually role play. It is a shame. Offline games can work because of mods, but mmorpgs have become very controlled. EVE aside.

Never heard of this, but certainly if someone is called you a role player because you don't follow cookie-cutter builds, then they are just wrong. Ignore and move on.

I'm a role player because I create a story for my character and act like them in game when I have an opportunity. I can't even type in old english.

Laugh all you want. I will be here having fun with every possible aspect of the game. You are welcome to join me.

I love playing MMOs with my father in law and my friend, but I really hate when they get annoyed with me that I dare take 30 seconds to read the quest text. Story, regardless of how trivial, makes a game way more fun than mindlessly killing X creatures and bringing Y items to NPC Z...

I'm confused. Why does this even infuriate you?

There will always be min-maxers, but that doesn't mean you can't have fun with your heavy armor-destruction staff nightblade or whatever. Who is gonna stop you?

Prepare for the hate wave.

People role play for fun and to have a fun experience aside from questing and killing enemies. They just like to relax and have fun, there's no shame in that. You may not like it but hey, that doesn't mean people can't do what they want. I don't role play because I have no imagination so I haven't really gotten into it.

Ye Olde Butcherede Englishe isn't immersive at all. It would be quite sad if it was a defining point of roleplaying.

Seriously, another great example. No one reads quests and if you do you are weird. Why are these people playing these games? Thousands of development hours went into making the content you are blowing through like this is counter strike. WTF is the point?

So you're weird if you read the quest to understand what to do and enjoy what content is being made? I hope your logic gets Hepatitis C and gets thrown down a pit...

What I am saying is that heavy armor-destruction staff nightblade player used to be the normal guy in these games. Now hes kicked from groups for not going cookie cutter and called an RP'er for not conforming to FOTM game play.

Really? you're surprised when people blow through regurgitated, generic dialogue that basically says "Go here, and kill this creature."? It has been a LONG time since I've read something in an mmo that went even remotely close to approaching even a below average teenage novel. Seriously. It's like you're watching a sitcom, except you're expected to read it. No.

edit: I respect you liking the Vikings actually. I'm a Broncos fan, and let me tell you, it's been a rough couple of months...*runs and hides*

I did, that's why I made a reply. You're judging people that try to comprehend what the quest is telling the player what to do by calling them weird.

The way the OP structures his sentences is very confusing. He's actually for the quest readers. That's why I was initially confused about why he was infuriated.

And here's some min-max for "ya"

You're getting kicked from the group because you don't have one point in the right place, meaning your dps will be 99% - come back when you've re-spec'd.

A lot of people use 'min/max vs RP' to highlight extremes in playstyle when they are involved in a discussion about a game or playstyle.

It does not necessarily mean anything beyond that.

You may want to reread his post. I don't think you quite got his point. You two actually agree on it.

People can associate me to role-players all they want for not conforming to their flavor of the month builds, I'm perfectly fine with that. The day they start calling me a terrible player is the day we'll have a problem on our hands. I like to play the way that I'm comfortable playing but that, in no means, makes me a bad or lazy player. I did quite a bit of serious raiding, back in my WoW days, and I never conformed to those cookie-cutter builds. I leave that to the min-maxers whom like to race and be the first (or close) to conquer content. I'm not a hurry, but that doesn't mean I don't want to get there, nor does it mean I'm not willing to put in the necessary amount of effort to get there.

His way of words is very confusing, I think I might be getting a migraine very shortly...

I re-read it, again, and how he's putting it, isn't too clear, it's just confusing how he's putting his words. But still, people shouldn't be judged if they read a quest, it's just silly and bias to some players.
