WW2 Games

Post » Sun Aug 09, 2015 10:24 am

Hi guys, recently I've been playing a lot of RO2/RS, and it's got me interested in World War 2 games again, but I can't seem to find any that interest me on Steam. I've got CoH 2, played Men of War and the WW2 CoD and BF games, and was wondering if you guys have any recommendations, any type from strategy, FPS to flight sim (that doesn't require a joystick etc). If the graphics are easy on the eye then that would be great.

Also use this to discuss WW2 games in general if you want.

Silent Hunter 3 with the Grey Wolves supermod.

Silent Hunter 4 and 5 - thoroughly modded.

It's a shame you don't have a joystick or I'd have recommended Il2 1946 and Il2 Cliffs of Dover. The latter run with the Team Fusion mod and with Reshade/Master Effects is arguably the best looking flight sim around atm - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xVs9wR5-WZU.

I've been meaning to give silent hunter a try, I hear 5 is riddled with bugs but 3 sounds pretty good. And it is a shame I don't have a joystick, I used to play Il:2 Sturmovik about 11 years ago, and it was great fun. The most recent I've played was Birds of Prey (?) on the 360. I think I may have to invest in a joystick soon.

http://www.gog.com/game/panzer_general_2 is a series (Panzer Assault 3D and Panzer General 2) I got on GOG awhile ago (a year or more?). It is based off of the board game by the same name. It is a squad size turn based tactical RTS game.

Steam has Memoire 44, though I think that is multi-player only.

It is, but once modded it's not so bad. Since there aren't any all-in-one supermods out for it like Grey Wolves modding it can be a pretty tedious and painstaking affair. Rather like TES and Fallout games really.

Red Orchestra is probably my favourite WW2 series.

IL2 Sturmovik was reasonably fun, I played it quite a bit when I was younger, I svcked at it, but still.

And there is Death to Spies, which I haven't played, but my friend says it's pretty good.

Ever play the Brothers in Arms games? Pretty good tactical FPS games where you're in control of a squad, with a decent story to them. Main series going from Road to Hill 30, Earned in Blood, and then Hell's Highway. You can get a Brothers in Arms pack on Steam and get all three of them for $20.

Now that I mention them, I'm getting the feeling of playing through them again. Some good memories from those games.

Death to Spies sounds a bit too hardcoe and time consuming for me, and I grew tired of DoD a few years ago, though I did have fun with it.

Only played Road to Hill 30 and Hell's Highway, can't remember much of Hill 30 but Hell's Highway was a really enjoyable game, hope they bring out another soon.

So far multiplayer wise I've yet to play one as intense and fun as Red Orchestra 2.

There is also hearts of Iron I guess, I haven't played it, but if you're into WW2 and you like grand strategy I'm sure it's great. I like grand strategy well enough, but the era covered by Crusader Kings is more down my alley. But it looks like a fun game.

Also you could always play the wolfenstein games, but that might be stetching it, I guess. Unless you want to kill Hitler etc.

I think I'll give HOI3 a try. Hopefully the learning curve won't put me off.

Have you tried War Thunder? Of flight sim games from that era (pretty much from WWII to Korean War), it has A LOT of aircraft.

It is pretty much for multiplayer only, but it's really good and can get really competitive. There's also tanks.

I apologize, with the IE11, it look like I can't put in links.

On the computer there's winspWWII that plays much like the old Avalon Hill tabletop games - turn-based with opportunity fire. It's free; pay for an upgraded version. But really, the free version is pretty good. It also ha a good forum.

Another that's more real-time is the Combat Mission Series. This was available at Good Old Games.

I haven't found many naval games, but I liked the old Fighting Steel game. Slugfest instead of carriers. Still has a modding community.

Another good resource is Wargamer.com forums

Cheers

http://www.gog.com/game/silent_storm_gold is IMO one of the best turn-based strategy games ever, and it's a WW2 game.

http://www.gog.com/game/death_to_spies is all about infiltration and sabotage. If you're discovered, you will easily die, so there is a bit of trial and error involved. Still, a pretty enjoyable game, even if it can be a bit clunky at times. It's a bit like the Hitman games, except you're a WW2 spy instead of an assassin.
