Xbox 360 and Playstation 3...

Post » Thu Jul 08, 2010 12:06 am

As a fan of the Elder Scrolls series. I would like to see Arena and Daggerfall formated for Xbox live arcade and online Playstation market or what ever they call it. See I have problems understanding the installation instruction do to my learning disabilities. Many at Xbox forums would also like to see this done. SO has there been any consideration of this being done? Dose anyone know?

Edit: I am willing to pay to play. I'll give you 800 Microsoft points for DF and 400 for Arena....

I think Bethesda has pretty much said that they refuse to do any work on these older games so you're out of luck bro.

They won't port them to a console, the only work being done is fanmade. Lucius is remaking Daggerfall for modern systems (computers only), the project is called DaggerXL.

I have down loaded dosbox and I put the files in the dosbox folder under a new folder names games. And still when I try to install arena or DF I get ether illegal command or can't load....

They really need to consider changing there minds and putting these games on Xbox live arcade or maybe when Elder Scrolls 5 comes out they can make it to where you can play Elder Scrolls 5 one play through and unlock Daggerfall and Arena. I see no reason for them not to do something like this as it will surly make them profit....

I don't see how this will bring them profit. Why should they spend resources and paychecks on working with some ancient messy DOS code to make a new version, when they already given away the game for free?

Because of the messy DOS code. From what I've read and experienced so far with Daggerfall is that there is one problem after another that makes playing non-fun. It is probably a minority that can make this game sing as they play. I mean I can't even play this game my self because after I Finley comprehended how to install Daggerfall I now have a new issue that makes the up arrow function in the game forces me to go left instead of forward.

But I have a new idea. Instead of them formatting the game for Xbox 360. They should go even further and remake Arena and Daggerfall with next gen tech. keeping the original story for both. Now that would defiantly make them profit...

You can just rebind the keys in the options. Just don't change attack to left click. Everybody wants to try that, but it doesn't work.

That aside, you fail to realize what a massive effort it would be at this point. Daggerfall is a massive pile of code. If they find it they would have to excise the parts they licensed from third parties (or get a new license if possible), rewrite most of the engine, heavily redesign the user interface, do thousands of man-hours of testing and debugging -- and what would they get? A console version of a game they already released for free.

It might be nice to see Daggerfall packaged in such a way as to have a one-button install with DOSbox. WIth something like that you do lose the benefit of being able to install hundreds of DOS games though.

DaggerXL, if/when it gets done, will likely make all these points moot. It could more easily be ported to consoles, though not sold for them unless Bethesda wanted it to happen. It will be easier to play on a PC anyway. Daggerfall was not in any way designed as a console game.

The resources Bethesda would spend rewriting Arena and Daggerfall for a platform that would have many users shun the games for having "primitive" graphics wouldn't be worth it.

Exactly. It's too bad they don't have some code to release that could speed up projects like DaggerXL. Bethesda's more recent games use a lot of licensed technology, which probably makes it nearly impossible to release source code. Their old games might be a similar case. The work they would have to do might be similar to how John Carmack had to remove the licensed Allegro sound libraries from DOOM when he released its source, but could be a lot more involved and difficult.

It's nice that they released the games for free. That's becoming pleasantly common with old games.

Not common enough, in my view. But I will always endorse the open-source release of a game's code base over the public domain release of the game itself. I hope Bethesda's acquisition of id Software doesn't impact its ability to release the source code to id Tech 4.

Carmack is good at arguing such things. If he fails with that we might see id tech 6 developed by Armadillo Aerospace and licensed to id. lol

Public domain? What public domain? Daggerfall certainly doesn't fall into that category. It's just free to use and has a surprisingly permissive license attached to it, even for a free game.

Boxer. It basically is a way to set your [censored] up on the DOSBOX without all the hard work. Drag and drop the install file. I dont know if you use a MAC or not, but it works fine for me on a MAC.
