Xbox 360 controller compatibility

Post » Sat Sep 25, 2010 2:30 pm

The one reason I buy the Xbox 360 version of most games (except FPS) is because I like the controller feel. They had compatibility with the Xbox 360 controller on the PC version of Oblivion but the problem is that it didn't work well at all with the controller, if at all. What I'm wondering is if Bethesda would be willing to make the PC version handle the same using the Xbox 360 controller as the Xbox 360 would. I just really want my amazing graphics from the PC version and I can hook up my m17x to my 52" HDTV and I'll be able to play Skyrim like I would on the Xbox but have the game look it's best.

Well, Fallout 3 had full compatibility with the Xbox controller, so it might happen. Personally, the only PC game I've used my 360 controller for was Assassin's Creed, and I have no intention of using it for Skyrim.

Oblivion had it, although I could never get it just right like playing it on the 360. I'm sure it will be available for skyrim also

I know exactly what you mean, I prefer using a controller as well. I actually kind of take it for granted that most games in the last few years actually work well with a 360 controller on the PC granted of course that they were also made for the 360. It seems like some of the games I have played even change the tutorials and what not to display, "Press 'x' to..." instead of "Press 'k' to..." which is fairly meaningless when using a controller. I would expect Beth to follow along this growing trend and support the controller.

Yeah. Really the only reason I bring this up is to get some confirmation from someone that it will indeed have preset controls in the game for the Xbox 360 and possibly the PS3 for when we attach our controllers. With Oblivion it did not translate well and I just gave up trying to make it work right even with mods. Don't get me wrong, I like the PC controls but they seem more second nature while the controller feels like it's an extension of yourself.

O wont use it but don't care if its implemented. If implemenented it should be done right. The PS3 controller should also be implemented.

This is the reason why we don't get a PC specific UI, to allow the PC version to be played with a bloody 360 controller.

If we did have a PC specific UI then it would no longer be playable using that controller...

There is no harm in adding the option to use the 360 controller and while they are at it, why not add the option for a ps3 controller too? I won't ever use the option because I like the keyboard and mouse but whatever.

If that was the case, then Oblivion would have had built-in 360 controller support. Instead, you have to play around with the ini settings and X-padder to get any sort of functionality out of it.

And could they not just make a PC specific UI but include the console UI for those who want to use a controller?

I really don't see a problem in an interface designed for the 360, I actually thought oblivion's was fairly easy to manage. I'm also a hardcoe PC gamer my self.

Personally it's not for me, but if it draws more people to play the game, then I would like to see them give controller support

I wish we could use keyboard, mouse and controller at the same time for more added quick key items/more controls etc.

But that would never happen and would probably become confusing.

In my opinion, or IMPO, the PS3 controller is actually much better than the X-box controller. It hasn't been redesigned since like 1999 for a reason. Edit: redesigned to add the anolog sticks. It's fundamentally the same controller that it was when the colour scheme was grey and grey.

I have never had issues using xbox360 controllers with any game on PC, and I play quite a bit of different games.

LMAO@Immature console player. Thanks for reinforcing the stereotypes.

@Tgoodchild: Neither has Windows 2000, but that doesn't make it better than OSX does it?

I could not care less about any 'stereotype'. LMAO @ there being a 'stereotype' for console players to begin with. I'm sick of these guys blaming the consoles for everything that they don't like. That is way more immature and ignorant than any remark I made. Put the blame where it is needed.

There's a difference between monopoly neglect (Windows) and only making small innovations on great designs (PS3 controller), even in a highly competitive marketplace.

The Xbox controller is horse excrement. You have to charge batteries for a Next Gen console controller? Even the original Xbox didn't need batteries. No thank you.

Yes, I agree with this 100%, and I am positive they will have compatibility with the 360 controller.

I imagine there will be full support for this (Xbox 360), and if not, then there are plenty of ways to bind game actions to a gamepad (Xbox 360, PS3, what have you) if you just ask your best friend, Big G.

Really? Because I didn't ask for a 3rd party computer gamepad, I asked for real compatibility for the Xbox 360 controller instead of what they had in Oblivion, which even with 3rd party software still wouldn't work correctly with it. I'm a hardcoe PC gamer too but for some games, such as TES, I just like the controller a little better for some games while I prefer the controls on the PC for others like FPS games. Mainly the problem with the 360 controller I had on the PC version of Oblivion was that I could bind the actions to the buttons but I couldn't get the directional sticks to work correctly (x axis wouldn't work) and the triggers and bumpers would have problems such as one trigger would bind but the other wouldn't.

Well you can sort of blame consoles for a [censored] y UI, but not really, It's the developers fault. Take morrowind for example. The PC versions' inventory screen had everything on one screen (awsome), but the XBox version had tabs that needed to be selected to show the different parts of the inventory, items, magiick, stats, etc just like oblivion's UI for both PC and consoles. They could have easily made a separate ui for PC that had everything condensed into one screen, but they didn't. Why didn't they create a separate UI? My guess is money. They were thinking, "Hey this UI we designed for the consoles works just fine for pc, lets just use it and save some time/money."

Having to click through tabs is very [censored] ing annoying, but it doesn't break the game.

That would be the jist of it. I'm not sure why everyone has issues with the console version of the UI. I never had any issues with it. It's a UI, as long as it get me to the items/abilities/information I don't care. I don't have an issue with UIs having tabs. Hell most of the time I like it better that way because it is more organized on information. I do on the other hand hate UIs that are difficult to navigate because they don't make clear where everything is which hasn't been an issue for TES yet. I don't have to have everything stream-lined into one page because frankly, like I said, I have to go looking for what I need through the massive amount of stuff on the page when I can just click on the tab that says "Armor". If the UI is usable and doesn't take me twenty years to find something, it's a good UI.
