Xbox 360 Controller for PC

Post » Thu May 19, 2011 10:13 pm

I have a 360 controller hooked up to my PC, so yes you can. It MUST BE HARDWIRED, wireless will not work.

My wireless 360 controller works fine.

I really hope Skyrim will support the 360 controller for PC (Dead Space did a fabulous job with this). I can't play with a mouse without getting shoulder pain, so this would be a really important feature for me.
However, I can even play Morrowind with my controller, so I don't expect to run into any problems.

If its on games for windows live then 100% yes. Part of getting certification for GFWL is 360 controller support out of the box.

maybe they have patched it since the last time I installed mine.

To support the 360 controller they have to make the UI consolified and not PC friendly.

i.e. no developer makes two interfances for a game based on method of interface, therefore if they make it 360 controler friendly it will be a completely rubbish UI for keyboard and mouse gamers.

They already have to design the UI to be console-friendly, as it's being released on the 360 and PS3. I don't see why it can't be changed from K&M "mode" to gamepad "mode" (and vise versa) via an option or setting.

It's also a matter of how big your hands are (alternatively comfort, personal preference, etc.). Doesn't matter how much you play on a console if you got big hands you aren't going to like controllers, and I speak from personal experience.

Hear hear! I fit both the "more experience with Keyboard & Mouse" (was playing on those before the term "gamepad" was even coined) and "sizable mitts" categories. I can't stand controllers for more than about a half-hour, at which point my hands start cramping up something fierce from being curled halfway into a fist constantly.

No the UI does not have to be console friendly, oblivion was on consoles and the UI for consoles and PC were both very different for that game and will be the same this time around.

I'd hate people to buy the wrong thing due to confusion, so let's be clear about this. If you connect your wireless 360 controller to your PC with a standard play and charge kit then it won't work. This is a mistake many people make (myself included the first time I tried it) so the poster above was right to try and point this out. Unless something has changed recently (feel free to elaborate on how you use it) you either have to buy a wireless gaming receiver ($30) or start messing about with hacks and drivers - which is hardly worth it when you can just buy a wired controller and save yourself the hassle.

So let's not confuse people. For all intents and purposes if you want to connect a 360 controller to your PC then you should buy a wired controller. The benefits of a wireless controller are pretty minimal anyway when it comes to PC gaming.

I'm good with game-pad or K&M... Personally I prefer K&M just because. As for Xbox 360 controller support for Skyrim... I'd be utterly shocked if they didn't.

I would say.....YES.

I plan on playing with a controller through my PC, which will be connected to my TV. This way, I get to enjoy playing on my couch in front of my 50 inch, and also enjoy all the mods that are released :celebration:

The other benefits are I get the ease of playing with a controller, and can still use commands if needed. But mostly this will be to play the mods.

Are you sure? I didn't notice much of a difference between the two.

Well, since they're already developing a console-specific UI, they can just add an option to switch between them.

It should be, though I would recommend at least trying k&m. Many of us find it inherently superior for first person games due to the much increased accuracy, and depending on how much you plan to mod the game you may end up not having enough buttons for additional actions!

For first person shooters, I enjoy my naga mouse and the keyboard but for TES games, I have found the controller suits me better. I just like the feel of it while playing TES and I can lay down on the couch and play for hours on end without having to sit up. But that's my view on it, yes, TES is a first person game but it doesn't quite play the same as a FPS imo.

Wait... can anyone confirm that they were able to play oblivion on pc with an xbox controller??

I was under the impression it didn't work right... the game couldn't recognize the bumpers, etc.

Since Skyrim will be a "game for Windows" it will have full support of the xbox360 controller.
Fallout 3 had.

You must only play PS3 then. Xbox controllers are ergonomically shaped to fit your hands, so big hands aren't a problem.

The UI's were exactly the same, what are you talking about?

I think it would be. Personally, I prefer keyboard and mouse for a game like this, but I enjoy using a controller for some third-person games that I have, like Just Cause 2 (which is really annoying to play with a keyboard and mouse)

Most games that are available for PC and Xbox would support PC controllers. And if not, there are a few third-party programs that can do that with a bit of keybinding.

Using a program like http://xpadder.com/, you can use any gamepad for any game. You just map the buttons to whatever key, mouse, or key combinations that you choose. Skyrim is guaranteed to have controller support, but this still may be useful to make your own configurations.

Yes, sorry. Of course you'll need a receiver.

If they came out with a xbox 360 controller for PC that worked just as good, I would get a PC for gaming. Heck I would even get a PS3 if they made one for that. The controls are the number one reason I like the xbox 360 better.

I used to only play pc games, played both morrowind and oblivion on pc with k&m, I've played a lot of games in-between and mostly 360 games, it took a while but now I actually prefer the 360 controller, no it's not as exact as the mouse, even though you can get really close with some training and high sensitivity stick settings, but the feel of controlling the character is to me much more natural realistic, I set my aim to invert and think of the stick to be my chars head, if I tilt it forwards he looks down, I draw it backwards he looks up, as if the stick was his head and neck.

I will get Skyrim for pc because of the mods, but I will for the first time use a 360 controller for a pc game, it will make my experience a lot better, I have total control of speed and motion, unlike just toggling between walk and run like on pc, with a mouse you also do everything so weird, you move your head and aim as if some bird/reptile, and it takes zero skill to aim with a mouse, to me it makes the game so simle and easy that it's no longer as fun. Mouse and keyboard is to me as dead for fps as counterstrike.

I am totally disagree with your comment, say Keyboard and Mouse are a dead for the fps... Where do you live? In another planet??? The dead for the FPS are controllers (simplified things...) And consoles with their aimbot and their stupid AI!

With a mouse you require hability to aim far objetives... In consoles you have aimbot and a lot of life!

Play The Specialists Mod (for Half-Life) and next tell me how that can be on consoles!

But is a matter of preferences... If you like xBox 360, play with xBox 360 controller (i want a PC friendly UI in Skyrim, just that... So if they do or not 360 compatibility... For me its nothing)

Yea....thats actually the point of playing with controller. Its a matter of, do you want to use an uncofortable, complicated system for controlling the game? I know I dont. Would I rather have 50 buttons for controls, or 10? Some people dont like using the W key on their keyboard to walk around. In fact, using a button at all to control the movement of my character is a horrible concept. I dont want buttons to control movement, I want a joystick for that.

This is a touchy subject because PC [censored] will never admit that playing on a keyboard isnt quite as friendly as picking up a controller. Why, that would be blasphemy. So what the controls dont respond like a mouse does. That has never once effected gameplay negatively for me.

The only benefit for me to get the PC version, is the mods and commands. Other than that, the PC version is worthless. That is why I will use a 360 controller for my PC, and have my PC connected to my tv. Its the best way to play. You get the benefit of the mods and commands, with the ease of a controller.

This is coming from someone who played both versions of the game. I simply will never prefer a keyboard full of buttons over a controller. Ever.

Thats because you can't remember keymaps for each game. I have diferents games and i use diferents controls for all.

They have specific 360 controllers for the PC and there is also a connector that will allow you to connect a regular 360 controller to your computer, but the controllers made for the PC by microsoft work better on the PC than with the connector.

As for xpadder working for any game for any controller, I have to attest that it doesn't work so well for Oblivion because it really messed with the joy sticks, which wouldn't work well, if at all. Made me sad :sadvaultboy:
