Xbox 360 Controller for PC

Post » Thu May 19, 2011 8:56 am

I may be getting into PC gaming, having been exclusively a console gamer until now. However, I would like to still play with a controller rather than a keyboard and mouse. I am wondering if a 360 controller would be officially supported.

Thanks.

It should be, though I would recommend at least trying k&m. Many of us find it inherently superior for first person games due to the much increased accuracy, and depending on how much you plan to mod the game you may end up not having enough buttons for additional actions!

I couldn't aim with a controler if my life depended on it. K&M is the way to go,much more accurate. :user:

Should be similar for Skyrim.
Still better with mouse, but I am the same, love the feel of the xbox controller.

It should be supported.
I think the controller was the reason why I liked the vanilla game on the 360 more.

It felt more comfortable, and I could adjust my running speed (not simply running/walking).

Maybe not THE 360 controller per se, but there are loads of good controllers for the PC out there and they are bound to be supported.

I always struggle with K&M. Dunno why, controllers are always far easier and more comfortable for me.

It's all a matter of habit. If you played more on K&M you're gonna be most comfortable with K&M. If you played more on consoles, you're going to be more confortable with gamepads.

It's also a matter of how big your hands are (alternatively comfort, personal preference, etc.). Doesn't matter how much you play on a console if you got big hands you aren't going to like controllers, and I speak from personal experience.

Well, Oblivion "supported" a 360 controller, but I never heard of any instance where it worked properly. I'd have my doubts.

I'm a keyboard and mouser every time, however having owned Oblivion on all three platforms I found the Xbox 360 (I had a 360 before my PS3, however have always been a PC Gamer, only got the PS3 so I could play Buzz, Singstar and GT5) controller be utterly ideal for all scenarios with the exception of marksman or targeted spells. As a pure sworsplaying character it was perfect.

I have a 360 controller for my PC and will give it a try, however, unless I end up needing to do anything which involve having to actually aim.

What I have seen Todd Howard is fan of 360 so I think they might make some kind of support for 360 controller for pc and I really hope they will do it.

I play mostly with K&M but 360's controller is much more comfortable for me. Also if there's that 'target magnetism' it will make bow using easier with controller.

I used to only play pc games, played both morrowind and oblivion on pc with k&m, I've played a lot of games in-between and mostly 360 games, it took a while but now I actually prefer the 360 controller, no it's not as exact as the mouse, even though you can get really close with some training and high sensitivity stick settings, but the feel of controlling the character is to me much more natural realistic, I set my aim to invert and think of the stick to be my chars head, if I tilt it forwards he looks down, I draw it backwards he looks up, as if the stick was his head and neck.

I will get Skyrim for pc because of the mods, but I will for the first time use a 360 controller for a pc game, it will make my experience a lot better, I have total control of speed and motion, unlike just toggling between walk and run like on pc, with a mouse you also do everything so weird, you move your head and aim as if some bird/reptile, and it takes zero skill to aim with a mouse, to me it makes the game so simle and easy that it's no longer as fun. Mouse and keyboard is to me as dead for fps as counterstrike.

Is it true that Fallout 3 and New Vegas come with a pre-loaded layout for the 360 controller? Is this because they are Games for Windows Live titles? And if so, will Skyrim follow suit with controller support?

I hope so too! Would be great if they could go back and add it to Oblivion as well. :P

I'm in the same boat. Since I started gaming seven years ago I've played almost exclusively with a controller, and the "k&m" has always just felt awkward to me. A mouse would probably be more accurate, but I'd have to get used to it. You don't break seven years of habit easily.

Edit: Excuse my fail, I forgot to mention that I'm also getting a gaming PC.

To support the 360 controller they have to make the UI consolified and not PC friendly.

i.e. no developer makes two interfances for a game based on method of interface, therefore if they make it 360 controler friendly it will be a completely rubbish UI for keyboard and mouse gamers.

Hopefully a PS3 controller via Bluetooth/USB will also work.

I am hopeful as I have heard that most multi-platform games nowadays support a 360 controller for PC.

It's a 100% different story for me, I'm very deadly in all FPS console games, but on PC I can't even hit a target who is not moving or shooting back. :/

My PS3 pad works with Morrowind, Oblivion, Fallout 3 and New Vegas so I am 100% sure Skyrim will support a 360 controller for Windows.

I'm a keyboard and mouse player, as well. And as for anyone that says joysticks takes more skill to use - why put handle bars on the steering wheel?

I've been using the same $12 Logitech keyboard, and the same $10 Logitech mouse for almost six years. Love that Logitech quality. I've been using them so long that I can't use other keyboards and mice well, and that I've worn the letters completely off my keyboard.

I have a 360 controller hooked up to my PC, so yes you can. It MUST BE HARDWIRED, wireless will not work.

Good to know. I'd like to get the PC version at some point and I'm horrible with the keyboard and mouse!
