Xbox 360 - Network Performance

Post » Mon Oct 06, 2008 6:21 am

been playing since launch, personal network is COX cable, 25 dwn 3 up, others with me are close in speed

overall, networking in game, is MUCH better than at game launch, but still needs improvement

usually in XBL prty with 2 to 5 or more doing different things

usually in squad in game with 2 or 3 people on both DSL and cable

usually get in first game in less than 30 sec, but have to alt between standard and fast rounds if gets caught "retrieving session details"

personally on wired connection, no router, but others with me are usually wireless

all of us are in specified region

connections, on average are 1, maybe 2 with 4 bar green, 1/3 to 2/3 with 3 green, rest yellow, one or 2 single red or yellow bars, some rare matches do come up as one 4 bar green, ALL others are single red

mostly, we do get into 1st game we try, mostly

noticed last time me and a squad-mate got seperated into different servers, mid-match, when I finished and returned to squad lobby while he was in another game, he got yanked from his room back to my lobby, not cool for him

host/server migration, "retrieving session details" and squad members getting split into other servers either while searching or in the middle of a match, all still need much work

still love the game, best FPS ever, totally worth the money, now

My experience after hours of testing:

What is improved:

-The in-game experience is much smoother now, and the latency is pretty good and playable for everybody most of the time. A really good job here Crytek... ;)
-I don't know if it's just me, but I think the player speed (or even the framerate?) it's slightly faster
-The new hit-detection and weapons balance are perfect now: don't change it anymore please
-I noticed an improved lobby and in-game chat too: stutter-free, and high quality
-I never migrate a session after 3-4 hours of gameplay straight. And the Host Selection is now a lot more accurate (with the host assigned very often to a friend of mine who effectively has the best connection of the party)

What still need to be fixed:

-The friggin and screwed Audio/Music in the Multiplayer Menù (I think my head is going to explode really soon!)
-The GRAIN Bug, that after 2 hours or so appeared again on my TV (in Multiplayer)
-Matchmaking Searches: very often some member of the party will be kicked out, very often in a "Black Screen" and he needs to relaunch the game from the Dashboard or restart the Console
-When some games are found, me and my friends experienced random freezes/crashes of the game (with the chat still going), and sometimes the entire console froze, and we needed to turn it off and restart it (very often on the Map Loading Screen)

That's it.
The Double EXP weekend is awesome anyway, and I finally reached my 50 too... ;)

Hoping to see a "big" patch that will EFFECTIVELY fix all the remain problems soon (with most of them on Lobby/Menu/Searches/Loading Screen, and no more actually in-game except for the GRAIN bug).
Keep it up Crytek, you're (finally) doing it right... :)

P.S.
Oh, i forgot some Details:

-Xbox 360 S with Wireless Connection
-I have specified my Region/Location on the Dashboard before playing
-The games are found in less than 30 seconds...but there are still all the problems mentioned above
-The in-game ratio of red/low bars where 2-3 out of 12 people average

dude above, i think they only changed the net coding cause the others would require a patch? maybe the thing you are seeing is because the games are running well and not laggy?
Can't wait to see the patch notes!

The hit detection wasn't fixed- in one match I played yesterday, I got killed by someone who passed me when we were both cloaked and fired a shotgun round behind me (I can't remember if I was host at the time or not, but it was pretty bad).

I think the it's only a "Config" thing.
Like Crysis 1 almost every aspect of the engine, the game and the netcode can be tweaked with only some/many adjustments to .txt files, vars and configs... ;)

I really see all those changes above for now, but the problems I stated are, unfortunately, still there.
And you're right, the game needs another patch for them.

Maybe it was a KillCam glitch?
In-game the game is very balanced and good now, for me... ;)

Nah, I think it was just a laggy game or something.

here is my feedback

- Did it take longer than 30s to find a game? (please try and be accurate with this) -- NO for TIA, for rest of the game modes it took quite more, and it was like noone was playing those (am not talking about new map pack), left games and came back to get a better connection, each time it put me with the same group of guys

- Are you on wired or wireless? -- WIRED

- Have you specified your correct locale (region) in your console settings? -- NO, that is on purpose there is no service of XBOX live here in Turkey, first it was set to US, same as my XBOX account, connection was always 1 bar orange, then changed it to UK, i can get 2 bars now, still orange though, mainly 1 though

- What was the ratio of red bar to orange bar to green bar players in the match? -- There was only 1 guy with 4 full green, rest were 1-2-3 bars distributed randomly

- Did you get into the first game without any issues? -- YES

Addt info, i also realised that most of the times the winning team was with the HOST, dont know rest of the team but my hits were not registering at all, emptied a clip on a guy from his back, he returned back and shot me dead instantly, similar things happened many times. Occasional freezes as well, for a few seconds though...

I have noticed something interesting but it has worked better. Graphics wise when a game firsts loads in MP, it has a almost flat texture no detail look to most all objects and buildings near by, say within 50 meters which it would do before, but now instead of it getting worse like usual, it will gain texture once i get close to the item and then the whole visual experience is maxed out about 5-10 seconds into the game.

Its as if somehow slowing the graphics visualization process instead of forcing a overload of visuals or something has made it much better. Is that what was part of this hotfix here recently, to regulate something to not get a overload of some kind?

Whatever it is keep up the good work!

It takes over a minute to find a match with the exception of my third attempt... I used a stopwatch on my phone!
I'm on a wired connection!
Yes I specified that i'm in ireland...
Host had a green bar rest had two yellow and two had reds
I think so but it took 3 attempts!

Last weekend seemed better and i don't know if its bacause of the xbox live updates(2 of em) or the game?

Updated Feedback:

Wired, 16 Down, 1 Up
In Germany, set to UK

Played Quick Match on Retaliation Onslaught last night (6:00 pm CET).
Got a game instantly, which was surprising but welcome.
Game was strife with lag at times, still somewhat playable, but not really good.
Funny thing, I was in a lobby with four people out of Japan and the rest from the US.
The lag was worst with the Japanese players, who seemed to teleport instead of moving and my hits never really registered.
All had two yellow bars except for the host.

Changed lobby, got into a Crash Site game on regular maps with people from the UK.
Lag was better, but only for one team.
The host's team had all green bars, the other team had all yellow or red bars.
Happened twice in a row with different hosts.

Anyways...

With my Freeze Ray I will find the time to find the words to...
Tell you how... How you make... Make me feel... What's the phrase?...
Like a fool... Kinda sick... Special needs... Anyways...

So Cry-Adam will the netcode be updated once a week or what? In case ya need to know my speeds are 20Mbit/s download, 2Mbit/s upload and a ping between 25 and 35!
I hope the netcode can only and will only get better...

Played a few games just now... all of them take more than one minute to find, a few games with all red bars/ except the host, the aim in wonky and the lag is the same/ worse than last week...

The lag is almost the same than last week, but the improvement on the network is notoriuos, and I'm glad of that 'cause I can enjoy more the experience of Crysis 2 MP.
It takes more than 3 minutes to find a match with a decent connection ... And many players have two yellow bars

They somehow managed to make the hit-detection even worse. This past week half of my deaths were completely random where I'd just walk around with no one around and I'd just die. No grenades going off, no jaws, no bullets flying, just me dying for no reason. Happens when I'm also near the line of fire, but no one is even close to targeting me only for me to hear an explosion and die. Been also put in matches were the lag was extremely bad more than usual.

And, one more last thing, when are the "stuck" sessions going to be rid of? It's annoying to keep encountering these when trying to join a match. Almost as annoying as joining a match I just left.

I had one of those and it lasted 10 seconds but the big thing is... I was still in the game!!!!

why is that running better(apart from bad ragdoll glitches and one melee hit kill...)

I wonder if they will start releasing DLC with guns or a free 'gun a month' considering crysis if part of EA's Gun Club... any thing new is nice(so long as the netcode and host select and region select if fixed in the new patch...)

Host Migrations usually works.
Or more accurately, Host Migration only doesn't work when the host either manually dashboards (to save his K/D or just to piss off the other people in the game) or gets a black screen / game freeze / console freeze. Reason for that is dashboarding / freezing instantly takes the console out of the information loop, making it impossible to transfer the host information from one player to the next, though the game system still tries for the maximum 30 seconds.
Just, you know, in case anyone cares.

Also, network connections were inconsistent over the weekend. Some games were good, some even great with greens all around. Others were bad, with spotty hit detection, teleporting players and the iffy melee combat. Mostly the games were okay, better than before, so kudos for that.

Oh, and L-Tags should be friendly-fire and self-killing. At least. If not colored in pink and labeled "sissy guns".

well i use cable internet, roughly 12mbps connection, i always use hard wired connection for the most part players i get connected with are orange bar sometimes green sometimes red since the update, but today for some reason the connection was a major issue, and i reset my modem multiple times to try to see if it was on my end. took a long time to find matches some times, and alot of game play latency issues. example; power kick a car and takes about 2 seconds before the car moved. or start shooting at a player and then the player vanishes and i get i die, kill cam shows me shooting nothingness and the player was behind me shooting me.. just things like that, i ran connection tests my connection was always good and i my router ports are properly opened.

Well, I've been playing on and off for some time now... and the things is, every time that I play it either gets worse or just stays the same O_o I have a wireless 20mb connection at home and for the most part, it works just fine. Certainly there are a few moments in which the connection itself is to blame for lagginess or for dropping me out of a game, but this happens on extremely rare cases. Crysis 2, however... is another kind of issue altogether.

To give you some feedback...

The first game is usually found quickly enough. The problem is it always seems to find games that are always halfway through finished. It is a very rare thing to find a full lobby getting ready for a match. Strangely enough though, after finding the first game, it gets progressively harder and harder to find games. After the second or third game in the same lobby (sometimes it doesn't even last that long) I mysteriously get kicked out of it to start a new lobby by myself... only to then kicked out of that lobby and into another one with a meager handful of people... and THAT game turns extremely laggy for no apparent reason. After that it just goes downhill... most of the time. There are precious few instances when the matchmaking behaves well enough and it becomes at the very least tolerable and at most, really damn good fun.

As previously stated, I have a wireless connection that works serviceably for me. I have also correctly placed my locale in the settings as the United States.

As for the matches themselves, though... Well, the inconsistency of various different connection speeds in a single match is the only consistent thing that I can count on. On most games, however most of the connection speeds lie somewhere around the 2 or 3 (orange and yellow) bar marks... most of them heading towards the red spectrum O_o There are a few scattered red bar connections every so often... and the host sticks out like a sore thumb because he/she is the only one with green bars. The only person that ever has 4 bars is the host, which makes it pretty damn easy to spot them. Also, there have been games in which the host has 4 green bars and EVERYONE else has a single red bar.... of course, connectivity issues are aplenty in those games.

Like it has been said before, the first games are usually found hassle-free... but after that it all just goes bat-**** insane.

Crytek... I really love your games and I really want this to succeed. I IMPLORE you to please fix the netcode... it is woefully lacking. I know I might be fanning the fires with this, but seriously... if you guys want an example of an amazingly good and stable netcode that allows for a solid online experience, you should probably take a look at the Halo series for inspiration. Sure, they have lag issues every so often, but all in all, it's pretty damn solidly built. If you guys had that kind of stability in your multiplayer, it would kick its ass to kingdom come. As it stands, though... it just feels... unfinished. I feel like I'm playing a beta or something like that.. especially with all those little details that make it feel like such an unfinished product. I mean, what the hell is it with the menu music? I got a suggestion for that... ELIMINATE IT ENTIRELY. As you can see in most other online shooters, they simply have no music in the lobbies... or if they do, they have a single song that plays over and over like CoD. It really can't be that hard to fix O_O
