PC. vs Xbox 360

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 2:12 am

I'm debating whether or not to purchase the game for PC or Xbox. I enjoyed my Morrowind and Oblivion experience on the PC a great deal. I like the precision controls that I had on the PC, as well as the sound, graphics, and overall feeling of immersion I got. I also liked being able to download mods that people created.

I did however feel somewhat disconnected from my friends who played the Xbox version. Can't really point to why, but it seems that somehow our experiences differed. When I finally did play the Xbox version, I really struggled to get the same precision out of my controller (mainly in ranged combat). I've also had this experience with the 360 version of Fallout 3. The controls seem VERY clunky to me. I have enjoyed the control scheme on games like Halo though, which makes aiming and shooting much easier. Now I know TES games are not shooters, but Fallout does have lots of gunplay and it's tough unless you use the VATS.

One other factor in my mind is that I'm married, and I hate to be cooped up my our computer room playing when if I'm on my Xbox I could be enjoying the game and in the company of my wife. Anyways, what do ya'll think? Anyone else had similar experiences? Basically I'm looking for an overall immersion in the game as well as the best possible controls I can get.

I would say, if you are interested in mods and you like to explore player created content, go for PC. If not, and you prefer just the game itself, go for 360. Plus, your married. I imagine you will not have a hole lot of free time, so I would go with 360. You'll have plenty of game to play.

I'm picking it up on the PS3, I'm a console gamer myself. But, to each their own.

Is dragging the PC tower out to the TV and using it as a monitor possible?
Perhaps coupled with the 360 gamepad, or maybe just wireless keyboard/mouse?

Seems like that would afford you the best of both worlds.

I am going to flame you so hard!!! Jk lol

Seriously though, if they make the 360 controller compatible with the PC version this time around then I think the PC version will be perfect. That way I can connect my computer to my 52" screen and lay back and play with my controller, much more comfortable imo.

Yes it's possible, best if you have an hdmi port on your computer so that you can attach it to your HDTV and get the best quality sound and picture.

I recomend the Xbox 360. Me personally have really enjoyed the time spent infront of the console-driven screen. I like the Xbox because of its suiting and comforting controls. Other things I like about it, is the stability. But, hey, it's up to you, but my recomendation points to the Xbox.

Well, if you're really into mods and prefer the PC's control scheme, I'd recommend getting the PC version. TES is a single player experience anyways, so I think you should go with the version you personally feel most comfortable with.

Personally, I just can't get used to the keyboard/mouse scheme, and I don't have a PC capable of running Skyrim anyways, so I'll probably be getting it for the 360.

Yikes. Touchy subject for some people. Here's the thing:

PC has mods and access to the in-game console which allows you to do all kinds of things to tweak gameplay or unclip yourself from walls if you get stuck and things like that. Mods can add hundreds of hours of extra gameplay as well as patch things not touched by official patches as well as add new armor, new quests, pretty much anything you can imagine. If you wanted things like spears, mods will add spears. You also get the Construction Set which lets you make your own mods or just tweak gameplay a little bit.

On the 360, you aren't getting any mods or any console access or anything extra at all. It objectively has less features than PC. However, a lot of people weigh that against typically having a more comfortable setup, i.e. being able to lay down or, as you said, play in the company of your wife, which I know would be a big deal for me.

I'd say if you can make your PC setup be more comfortable or in a better position, it's totally worth it for the extra experience you get for playing on a PC.

But if you don't care about mods (give them a chance, since some people view mods as only god weapons and ridiculous immersion breaking things when only a few are like that), and you aren't concerned about using the console, then don't worry about it and get it on 360.

One question:

Is it possible to connect the Xbox controller to the PC? I really like to play Xbox (because of its controllers and sofa-sitting), but I want to optimize the graphics by hooking it up to my PC. So is it possible? Please reply.

That I actually don't know if it's possible; I've never had the desire to try.

I don't have a 360 but I am almost positive that this is possible. I know a lot of people that said they do this. It might just be a specific type of controller but I think it works with any kind. If not, there are affordable controllers you can buy for just this type of situation that mimic a 360 or PS controller. I have one.

I waiting to see the System Requirements before making my choice. I don't know if I can convince my wife the computer needs upgraded again. Especially for pretty much the only game I'm interested in on PC. A bit of RAM or a new Graphics Card would be okay, but I have a feeling I'm going to need to do more. I've still only got an AMD dual-core 6000+ processor, and I don't think the motherboard can take much more, if I remember right.

It'll probably be PS3 for me.

Yeah, its possible. You can also buy a logitech controller at electronic stores, such as Radio shack or Best Buy, or whatever electronic stores are close to you. These controllers are more like Playstation controllers, however.

Well if they make the 360 controller compatible perfectly like it would be for the xbox 360 on the PC version, then you can have the amazing graphics of the PC with the comfort of the controller. Also you can still play it on the tv by hooking it up to your tv with an hdmi cable. So basically you can turn your PC into a console if the controller is compatible. I just prefer the 360 controller for TES than the pc controls, I like to lounge while playing for a four days straight without sleep lol.

I guess it depends, they both have their strong points.

I think that because TES games have such a good modding community that I would choose the pc for that reason, if I had the money to do so.

I did get my 360 controller to work on my Xbox once, I had to use some program I downloaded but I don't recall what it was. It didn't work out too well though, but that could have been because I downloaded a free program.

And I loved all the mods I got, especially for Oblivion. Ya'll make some good points. So far I'm leaning towards PC. :) I do like all the insight though.

Well I know it's possible in the technical sense, rather I meant was it a viable option for him. ;)

It's more than viable for him unless he has a computer that can't handle Skyrim.

That I actually don't know if it's possible; I've never had the desire to try.

It's possible to hook up the 360 controller to the computer but the problem is that Oblivion didn't have very good compatibility with the 360 controller, the joy sticks had issues and some of the buttons wouldn't map correctly. Fallout however did have good compatibility so let's hope that skyrim will also.

Connect your PC to the TV and get the best of both worlds. Enjoy the company of your wife, and enjoy playing the mods (sure, you'll have to use a gamepad, but come on).

To those of you who want to connect your wireless Xbox 360 controllers, http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-Wireless-Gaming-Receiver-Windows-Pc/dp/B000HZFCT2.

Otherwise, you can just buy a wireless or wired Xbox 360 controller for Windows.

EDIT: Sort of ninja'd by Alois Hammer. :ninja:

The player made mods is really what makes people care...X360 owners most likely won't have access to them. They can literally change the game for the better.

Interesting problem, so you have your Xbox360 in the living room and the compuer somewhere hidden? If your wife likes to watch you playing / plays herself or simply wants to be with you instead of having you locked in in your PC room, then Xbox360 for sure.
Personally, I'd only buy PC version fo the game if I had a good enought PC, sadly I don't, and even if I had the PC version, I'd be using the PS3 controler to play it :)

It's only really important to be able to aim fast and accurately in FPS games, so even if you have problems aiming with a controler, it won't punish you. there is yet another good thing I can think of that would go more towards Xbox360.

But if your wife is someone who doesn't like games one bit, then I'd hide inside my gaming room
