PC vs xBox 360

Post » Tue Mar 09, 2010 7:04 pm

Hey guys,
I'm getting an xBox 360 soon, and was wondering if it would be worth it to buy Oblivion for the 360 even though I already have it for the PC. My PC isn't the best one out there, and Oblivion lags every now and then. I hear it runs better on the xBox, and my first ever experience with Oblivion was on the xBox so I'm a bit familiar with it. Anyway, this topic is to discuss the pros and cons of the PC version and the xBox version.
Thanks!

I played on the 360 and then upgraded to the PC version. My advice, don't do it.

While I loved playing Oblivion on the console, now that I've had the joy of mods, I can't go back. Ugly characters are ugly.

Edit: Just remembered one more reason to stay PC...Abomb. It's fixable on the PC, but not on the Xbox.

Ive own the game for the PC.
Every time I go to a friend of mine who has it on the xbox, and we play it there.. I get the feeling something is missing.
Mainly all the little things my mods added. I just got a lot of "oh yeah, cant do that here" moments on the xbox.

And if it runs better? Depends on your pc. The xbox of my friend runs it better than my pc.

It really is a simply a matter of personal preference. If you PC can run the game okay, you can mess around with mods and change things up, which holds a lot of appeal for people (me included.) However, if you PC can only just run the game, the xbox visuals and stability may make for a much more relaxing and fun gaming experience.

A modded Oblivion is so much better than Vanilla that it blows the mind. Playing the original game feels like an old Beta to me now.

Also, it runs rather poorly on the 360, even when installed to the HDD. It may run very good in interior cells, but riding a horse outdoors (or in some places just looking around stationary) actually stutters more than it does on my pathetic P4 2.8GHz CPU, and that is ridiculous.

One perk with Xbox is that you can still download the extra DLC from the Live Marketplace (or whatever it's called). The DLC isn't available for PC unless you download a Deluxe version of the game from Steam, or by Knights of the Nine separately (but that's missing Fighter's Stronghold).

Is your PC just old, like more than a few years, or could it just do with some cheap improvements like more RAM or a better graphics card? It might be worthwhile to just upgrade the PC a bit, in case you end up preferring that version over the Xbox.

It lags a little on my laptop too, but some tweaking helps with that. I don't think there's an .ini file to adjust on the Xbox, so there's another point for PC.

I had it on xbox before I bought it for PC. I couldn't imagine playing now without mods. And as for it running better on xbox, I'm not so sure. I used to get alot of lag and stuttering when running from place to place on the xbox.

The game runs better on my Xbox than on my PC. It's more stable too. But that's really where it ends. I absolutely adore customising things to my liking, which is why I love the PC version. Mods and the console are superb, and while giant mods like OOO are great, the little ones are the ones that make the biggest difference to me. Bedroll mods, small interface mods, natural interiors, these little things that make a giant impact.

I have both versions and PC version is the better choice because you can change all your video setting, use mods, and create mods. There really is no difference besides those reasons in my opinion. There is less lag on my Xbox but its not gone completely. Video quality is much better on the PC, though I have a pretty good machine.

And if you still cant decide, know that you can get the GOTY version for Xbox for under 30$

I have both, but...while Morrowind, I felt, played better on PC...Oblivion is always going to be a Console affair with me. That might be because of my rig and how much hell my brother gives me about playing the same game on two different systems.

I say stick with the PC version for the following reasons:

1. Real men play only PC games
2. No mods leaves a ton of holes in OB's gameplay IMO
3. No console so you can't fix those annoying quest bugs
4. Unless you've got an HDTV the quality won't be any better, maybe even worse
5. See #1

Oh yeah...nothing makes me feel more like a man than dealing with the slowdown and eating up hard drive space with cosmetic mods that serves as nothing but eye candy.
Yeah, what the heck is with those kids who actually trust the developers to provide the fun and the comfort of a good controller in hand?

If you've got the PC to handle it then definitely get it on that: the mods, the better visuals, the patches and man... I could go on all day.

However, if your PC if rather rubbish then I'd recommend against it; all that lag and crap will make the game really annoying to play, when instead you could be relaxing on the couch playing the 360 version with almost no problems.

It's a matter of personal preference, too.

Pretty much.
Now...Morrowind...That did not age well on Console. I now strictly play that one on PC-which plays amazingly on my rig. With a few system altering RP tweeks for flavor of course. I never download a mod simply for looks. It has to have function.

Oh God... tell me about it. I actually think it'd be impossible to play Morrowind on the Xbox. Those load times...

The Backwards Compat went to hell when the NXE came out. On mine, I swear it will freeze on the select save file screen if you wait too long.

 Oh yeah. I had Morrowind on the Xbox for a brief time and I avoided dying just so I didn't have to wait two whole minutes for the game to load my last save.

Ah yes, you won't believe how many novels you can finish while waiting on those load screens. Fortunately, it's much better with Oblivion. OP, it's really a matter of preference. PC has the mod advantage, but if your rig isn't up to snuff, 360 is a good way to go.

Why do I get the image of an angry old man? :P

Try to be a little more open to other game styles ;)

Also, nothing about Oblivion is manly...

Btw, PC wins. I don't use any cosmetic mods or overhauls, but I'm addicted to Quest mods.

XBOX 360 runs the game smoothly, and is nice to have if you have the extra cash. I personally own oblivion 3 times over and don't regret it. (XBOX 360 GOTY edition, PC Collectors Edition, and PC GOTY edition) You have a bit less RP freedom (unless you like the difficulty slider), and the characters never look as good as the moded ones. Yet I don't think it is a waste.

The idea of laying in bed playing it is very appealing to me. Playing games like Oblivion on the PC feels funny to me. Plus, my computer isn't that great (I'd say it has about 5/8 of the specs of an xBox). I didn't use many mods anyway (in fact the only one I have now is one that allows you to bash locks open, which I don't do often anyway.) so that's not much of a problem.
After reading all the posts, I think I will invest in getting it.
Thanks everyone for your opinions.

360. real gamers play consoles.

Actually, last I checked, real gamers played on whichever system is their preference.

For me, PC. With texture packs, LOD overhauls (like http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=20053), .ini quality tweaks, environment and weather overhauls, things like Illumination Within, etc, coupled with efficiency and optimization mods, Oblivion looks and plays absolutely amazing.

And then there are quest mods (The Lost Spires), difficulty-adding or world-rebalancing mods (OOO, Living Economy, Cyrodiil Transportation Network, Saddlebags, etc), just mods galore. And the ability to add in whatever content you can dream up.

There's no law saying a PC has to be placed on a desk, or that a PC user has to sit in a chair. I have my PC on a very low table and play on the floor, surrounded by pillows. It's more comfortable than any couch I've sat on and at least as comfortable as any bed. I'm typing this stretched out on my side. I guess I have the best of both worlds. Comfort and mods. ;)

I'm sure there are many glorious perks for those PC gamers who can manage to get the game to run smoothly (system requirements wise) and bug-free (drivers, patches etc etc), but even though I own a decent PC, I've never been that lucky. Over the years I've grown to hate PC gaming in general because to me it feels like an endless affair of updating drivers, downloading patches and basically just beating my brains out against a brick wall to get a game running. Compare that to the convenience of settling comfortably on my couch, just clicking a couple of buttons and starting to play right away with the guarantee that the game will run and a very slim chance of it ever crashing, and the decision is quite clear.

If you have a good gaming PC with everything in order (so it doesn't give you ANY grief with bugs or technical/hardware issues) then you'll probably get more out of your gaming experience than you would with a console, particularily because of the mods. But if you don't, the convenience and lack of stress of the xbox wins my vote.

Pretty much sums it up. Oblivion on the PC is amazing if you have a nice, solid computer. For people with low end computers, it's more trouble than it's worth.
