Yagrum *SPOILERS INSIDE*

Post » Sun Sep 05, 2010 5:31 am

Yes, I've noticed he's a Psijic. Fyr was a cosmopolitan traveler as well, with many friends, all willing to give him a new home, I'm sure. But where did he retire? He didn't choose Artaeum, or the Imperial City, he chose Vvardenfell. That was his home. Where he belonged. As pragmatic and well traveled as he may have been, to attatch that value to a place means more than chance, when considering whether or not he survived. If he didn't I don't see how Yagrum could. Maybe they all teleported out; or maybe they took a boat, but the better answer is - for the moment - they all died with old Tamriel.

I wouldn't be surprised if the mushroom towers were able to withstand the resulting tsunamis and earthquakes. So we don't know for sure.

The entire island is a volcano, and that exploded underground. What would happen to the surrounding land, if Olympus Mons was so active the entire volcano blew up from several miles below, not giving it a moment to errupt? Yeah.

Red Mountain isn't Olympus Mons. And they weren't even on the island.

Off of that, how did Sul survive it?

Thank you, I was unaware. It scales to that size, or greater.

Don't you know? I thought he survived it by teleporting out.

I'm sorry but that makes no sense, if the moon was stopped, it would no longer have the velocity it built up entering the atmosphere.

If you have a copy of The Infernal City, start reading on page 213. I'm not going to retype everything here. The moon was 'frozen' but still retained all of its inertia.

Who says he retired? Exactly what age is it that a 4,000 year old Psijic wizard retires?

The only reason he stayed there is because of his research into corprus; the Nerevarine ended that for him. Not much else reason for him to stay especially knowing that doom might be on the way...

Off of that, how did Sul survive it?

If I remember correctly he was thrown into Oblivion somehow, that's how the whole business with Vile started.

Only the center of the Island (the Ashland and Red Mountain regions) was the actual volcano. As for the destruction, we don't have a lot of details on it. But I don't think it's implausible that they didn't survive.

Divayth Fyr, dead? You must be smoking the crazy pills.

I was there, I saw it with my own eyes, the cliff racers can testify to it.

The magma swelled, the oceans boiled, waves of earth and molten lava swarmed towards the Zafirbel Bay. City after yurt fell until it was upon the doorstep of the grand plant that is Tel Fyr. The elder mage watched with peace as the infernal eruption neared his home.. and then it stopped, for the mage had opened his eyes. No spelled was uttered, not a wrist was flicked, twas the sheer beauty of his aura which stopped short the RaGada gods of soot, the color red and seismic waves (for only the Raga have such silly gods). "A pimpmer longer-lived than gods, tis not within our loins to raise ourselves against such a one."

To this day all of Vvardenfell lies in waste save for the island oasis of Tel Fyr which even the very volcanic earth dared not disrupt for fear of the Psijic's rage, for afterall, if the Psijic can dissipate whole islands, what would they have done to spirits of this land should it disturb their meditation?

As for the dwarf, I only quote the masters, 'even gods dislike the absolute.'

Have you even read the book?

I am really beyond exhausted with all the people who cannot accept the fact that the Ascadian Isles is now a smouldering crater-lake and Vvardenfell a post-mega eruption wasteland. The Ministry of Truth was basically a meteorite and it was frozen in time by Vivec - It still retained it's original speed and velocity. When Vivec dissappeared, the magic that was holding The Ministry of Truth frozen in time started to dissipate. Which led to the creation of the Ingenium.

When The Ministry of Truth did impact, there was a huge explosion and it caused Red Mountain to erupt. A huge eruption which caused massive blankets of cloud, smoke and ash to envelope nearly the entire province of Morrowind. These huge mega eruptions have happened before in the history of Morrowind, all with quite catastrophic effects on the country.

It is canon and it happened.

They survived the last eruption, the one that created Vvardenfell and blocked out the sun for an entire year.

It doesn't mention anything of Mournhold specifically but I think it would've been attacked by the An-Xileel army when they invaded - The entire surviving Dunmeri population was driven north to Solstheim by the Argonians.

Ok. Yes. He didn't retire. What's more, he's alive. He made it. We'll see him again, I'm sure. Now that I've said so, are we going to argue why he couldn't have survived?

It was frozen in motion there, it didn't originate there. It still has its original velocity from when it was originally hurled at the city...

That certainly does seem to explain how it could do so much damage, but it does lead one to wonder why Vivec stopped it in such a way that it would retain its original velocity when it fell, I'm sure that with his god powers, he COULD have drained away all its velocity instead of just freezing it in place. It seems like he was either a really neglectful god who failed to consider what would happen if he died or lost his power, or didn't really care as much about his people as we thought.

But regardless, I could certainly see Divayth Fyr having survived, Yagrum somewhat less so, not because there's any reason Fyr couldn't have saved him if he had the chance, but simply because his death would make the disappearance of the dwarves absolute, ao from a narrative standpoint it would serve to close off that threat, not to mention that an individual who is the last living member of his race dying would carry a bit more impact than some Dunmer dying, even if that Dunmer is Divayth Fyr.

It was his purpose to have The Ministry frozen in that manner - Consult the 36 Lessons of Vivec and in particular, Sermon Thirty-Three:

When Nerevar returned, he saw the frozen comet above his lord's city. He asked whether or not Vivec wanted it removed.

'I would have done so myself if I wanted, silly Hortator. I shall keep it there with its last intention intact, so that if the love of the people of this city for me ever disappear, so shall the power that holds back their destruction.'

I'd have to go back to the novel to check, but when I read it a few months ago the Ingenium project sounded like a secret that only a handful of Dunmer had worked on; Sul and Vuhon being the principal mages. We shouldn't automatically assume Fyr would be aware of the project, when he's practically a hermit in his tower.

Also, if I remember right his tower is at sea-level, so it could have been hit by a tsunami. In theory, the tsunamis could have been as tall as a mushroom tower, or taller. I hope though that the devs will include a text in the next game (as StoneFrog suggested), mentioning the fate of Fyr and various other NPCs. It could be that we'll never know.

Here's the Vvardenfell game map: http://www.imperial-library.info/maps/map-morr-enormous.jpg
It looks to me as if Tel Fyr was too close to Red Mountain to survive. Alternatively, maybe a tsunami would have been channelled up through Azura's Coast to Tel Fyr and Sadrith Mora. Since the Ghost Gate had been down for several years at least (since the events of "Morrowind"), it wouldn't have been a barrier between Red Mountain and the rest of Vvardenfell either. Looking at the map, I wonder if any Ashlanders had the chance to flee; and also, I wonder if survivors sailed from Khuul to Solstheim, or would they have had to sail from the mainland. You could speculate about this all day, which is the fun part.

Yes, but syronj has taken up your role so you may now argue with him.

Its rather vaguely stated. It only says that Vivec left and thus the spells that were holding the moon began to dissipate and that "our best" feared it would fall, thus they built the Ingenium which originally required them to slaughter prisoners in rather large numbers.

We know that rumors of Vivec's departure reached all the way to Cyrodiil, we have no idea how far rumors of his power's waning with the moon reached (though again, anybody familiar with Temple theology could have connected the dots between Vivec and the moon). Plus, "our best" is too vague to draw any conclusions from - it could mean the Dunmer people in general, it could have been some small Temple sect. I get no hint of secrecy, mainly because its too vague to suggest anything one way or the other...

Thanks. All I can add is that I would guess "the best" means "the best minds" -- the most freethinking of the Dunmer mages and priests.

I would imagine a mushroom tower would be pretty hard to knock over, considering a fungus that big must have some deep roots.
