Is 5 years too long to wait between games?

ME2 isn't even officially announced, let alone have a release date.

Mass Effect 2 has been out for a long time now.

5 years also allows plenty of time for modders to work on large projects before the next game comes along and drags most people along with it.

The mods also keep the games fresh long enough. ;)

Is there a internet flu around with the sheer amount of coughing going around in this thread or is it just me?

:cough:Good games take time to make:cough:

Curses now I have it. Anyway Fall Out 3 complicated things but in all honesty I would't mind if Bethesda decided to give the Fall Out rights to Obsidian and stick to TES. Granted I recongnize that TES will probably run out of material quicker or worse yet make overall less then stellar games with nothing to deviate from their main project but there is still plenty of lore to make use of and provences still unplayed (annoying arena). Besides to help remedy that possibility there can still be 4-5 year devopment times focused on TES without any side projects.

What do you mean "annoying Arena"?

The first dungeon in that took me so many tries. There's no clear cut strategy. Even Daggerfall, annoying as it is, has a way that you can figure out in time.

The lore specifically deters this from ever happening because the world is repeatedly destroyed and remade. It's endless.

Skip to 2:20, that shows my thoughts on the game.

Hail to the king baby! I have many fond memories of DN3D Dukematches over LAN. I've been waiting for DNF so long a part of me doesn't believe it's actually coming out. The game looks amazing for being so "old", June 14 can't get here soon enough.

5 years between games as massive as the Elder Scrolls feels perfect. Just enough time to put in plenty of thought and planning before official development, and plenty of time to work out all the kinks. Not to mention new graphics, physics, and animations always feel nice, which after 5 years of tech development are essential. And, after five years, all the anticipation and excitement is so much higher...(as are expectations). 5 years feels perfect.

Depends on the game and the person waiting, I assume.

For me, it svcks to wait this long, but it's always been worth it.

Not long ... I enjoyed these 5 years, playing Oblivion and Fallout 3 / NV ... I never even thought about TES 5 much...
This will be the best game ever created (for me) and my favourite, for sure.
Call of Duty made so much games, and Call of Duty 2 still owns them all, because others were made just for cash, and for people who don't know what a real game is.

With this level of interest in the series do you think 5 years between installments is too long? Or do you think Beth have the sweet spot?

*Looks at Oblivion and Fallout 3, then Morrowind/Daggerfall and Fallout 1*

No, no it isn't if Bethesda's using their time well.

While it will in theory be 5 years, we must not forget that Fallout 3 "used" most of the BGS crew. I doubt a lot of people worked on TES during Fallout 3 development.

Many people think that but they forget one tidbit. A console generation has a lot to give. Look at the accomplishments made on the 360 and PS3 even though their maxes were supposedly reached a long time ago.

Yes new hardware would bolster it but quick cycles are very anti-average consumer unless trade in rates are increased substantially.

Another thing to consider is Oblivion when released was one of the premier RPGs on the 360 and later PS3.

Even with improved graphics consider all the setbacks Bethesda faced.

Because of the new generation and the fact that Oblivion was their first fully voiced game ever, much of the quality was removed just for a little graphical power.

I prefer a Skyrim this generation with Beth much improved on writing dialogue VOs can handle and a general max of consoles VS. graphics of the next generation and so the whole game suffers in quality for a little graphical edge.

Edit: NOTE: Oblivion's pure standard fantasy feel however was intentional barring any console or PC hardware.

Morrowind /=/ Majority of Elder Scrolls games.

If Skyrim is as much of a leap from Oblivion as Oblivion was from Morrowind, it's fine with me. Though I preferred a couple of aspects of Morrowind, Oblivion was a great overhaul and I'm looking forward to the next.

I really prefer that they don't leak information any earlier than they did for Skyrim. Otherwise, I'll be hunting and pecking around the internet and lurking on forums.

That'd be a shame. I liked FO3 more than FO:NV. :)

3 words: Duke Nukem Forever

And if we're talking about a Elder Scrolls game, i'll wait for 10 years.

In all actuallity, they just started takling about it 5 years ago. For the first two years, Fallout 3 was their prime interest. You also have to factor in the time it took to build the engine from scratch. So, all in all, I'd say that Syrim is currently on a pretty damn fine developement cycle.

hehe guessing 10 out of the 14 years was begging ESRB to get it a M instead of AO rating :hubbahubba:

On the other hand because they sacrificed an expansion pack for fallout 3 thus saving team members and QA unlike Shivering Isles they had that benefit.

Plus preproduction on Skyrim most likely was much easier/smoother and quicker compared to Fallout 3.

All in all I think they have the oppurtunity to hit it out of the park with Skyrim.

I agree that their production time isn't all that dissemiler to others(Unsure if Morrowinds was 4 or 6)

I really do think their in the best position to deliver Bethesda's best work as a studio this time so Morrowind is finally dethroned(Against fellow RPGs Morrowind isn't all that impressive.)

Hell no it's not too long to wait! This isn't Activison that pumps out a crappy game every six months, this is Bethesda. They take there time making sure a game is the best it can be. With games, time = quality. Even with five years of development they're still going to have to cut a lot of cool stuff. You want them to have too cut even more stuff? You must be very used to buying games that only have about five hours of game play for full price. Go play Cod 27 if you don't have the patience to wait for a quality game.
