Is 5 years too long to wait between games?

Post » Mon Mar 14, 2011 11:23 pm

No it isn't too long, quite frankly I'm glad it's been this long that way Skyrim will be pretty much solid at launch unlike Oblivion where you had glitches and problems everywhere because the game was rushed to get onto the 360.

No. Next subject?

^

I've played and replayed Oblivion... (and Morrowind for that matter) several times since their release, so I don't think it's too long to wait. Then again I do play on the PC, where I can mod or download mods to my hearts content, which adds hours more to each play through.

Fallout 3 did not last me very long, the ending/storyline in general, irritated me to the point of having many less play throughs than TES games.

all I know is after I was finished with oblivion I would check the internet every few months for news of the next elder scrolls game. I just about crapped my pants when I saw skyrim was in the works a month after it was announced.

With this level of interest in the series do you think 5 years between installments is too long? Or do you think Beth have the sweet spot?

Well they've made amazing games with ~4-5 years between each installment (not including the spinoffs) and it seems to work so why change the formula

Not if the game is better because of it. I don't want Beth going downhill just to appease the impatient masses.

Yes, but it's realistic, cause FO3 was in there, so it was only 3 years of developement for Bethesda.

Immagine if Bethesda spent 5 years making a single TES game!!! OMG! It'd be beyond mortal comprehension!

Omg, we are on the same side of a discussion for once

Indeed, 5 years works to the quality of the game and I'm willing to wait.

BGS definitely has the sweet spot.

Consider this:

BGS goes between TES and Fallout keeping things interesting. Some of you may not like Fallout, but BGS can learn a lot from that game to make further improvements to TES. Also, since it takes longer for BGS to make new TES games, it also means that the game has larger leaps/advances in terms of technology and capabilities. While I wouldn't be against a TES game every three years, making one every five allows for huger improvements and the kinds of crazy innovations we as fans like and BGS enjoys bringing to life (dragons in Skyrim would not have been possible without this long development period).

For the TES series of games, no. There is so much that goes into these games. I would rather they take longer and do it right than try to turn it around quickly for a quick profit.

The five years between TES games suggests they're doing that.

Meh.

As long as TES is mostly a tech demo of what is possible even with roleplaying games, 5 years is OK.

The rulesystem svcks extremely. Why did they do such a mainstream game and then decided not to give it a simple to use rulesystem, but the most svcky of all rulesystems that forces you to keep book about all the skill improvements and everything, additionally forcing you to powerlevel by the superstrict Diabo-like leveling of Oblivion ? I have heard rumors that Skyrim will improve in this area, though. In Oblivion, I ended up simply leveling up with the console to avoid the whole stupid rulesystem issue. Additionally, you have no party so there are not that many tactic possibilities, so no challenge in that either.

Story content is okay, but not brilliant. Its also because of the rulesystem. Thanks to the simplicity of it, its nearly impossible to actually create a challenge where the player has to actually study the opponent and find a fitting strategy. Instead, you can hit the other guy with whatever overpowered strategy you have mastered.

Interface is also not brilliant. Simple, yes. But Oblivion annoyed me to no end with the idiotic fact that you couldnt remove spells. How can one possibly miss such a feature in a game where overboarding spelllists are unavoidable and you only get 10 quickkeys ?

Give me a rocking rulesystem that allows real challenges and story content that rivals the best of the genre, such as Baldurs Gate 2 or Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines. THEN I complain about not enough TES games. As long as its mostly a fun test for my graphics card, I dont need to see new instances of TES more often.

Besides, soon I'll start playing SWTOR(*)... probably wont need too many singleplayer gaming after that for a while, anyway.

Its a good thing too, all the roleplaying games that get released recently, such as Dragon Age 2, do not interest me. Actually right now TES seems to be the truest new roleplaying game on the market.

Make the development cycle every 10 years.
One for 10 year old's, then one for 20 year old, then one for 30 year old's....

I am growing old just waiting for the next game...

... NO its not making this good games is hard back braking job where the workers sweat blood allready, asking them to increase the speed would be stupid and would make the game go down.

Providing there's plenty of "crap to fill the gap" then I don't mind waiting so long for games. Especially if it means they will be high quality masterpieces that I will play for nearly as long as I waited.

Id wait 6 for a game as perfect as this on will be.

Uhhhh....guys, I don't mean to be a pessimist here but, when OB came out we started saying it was worth waiting this long from MW, and yet there were a lot of problems with OB. Don't mak the mistake of getting too excited about this game, for all we know, it could be a total let down for five years of work.

They've essentially been working on Skyrim since oblivions release, as stated by Howard himself. They worked on fallout because they thought the franchise was really interesting and fresh and they wanted a break from cyrodiil. But they've always had their hand on Skyrim to a certain extent. These five years have been pent making what we saw in the trailer. it's not like it's been done in the last few months or anything. Skyrim will be nothing short of amazing when it comes out, and that will be down to the five years they have spent making every detail sublime

If I had the choice between waiting five years for a great game or having bethesda spew out a mediocre 'RPG' every 2 years like some companies, I'd definately choose the first option.
