Is 5 years too long to wait between games?

Post » Tue Mar 15, 2011 8:32 am

Not to be rude, or single even Bethesda out, but my expectations after five years of development are so beyond what any developer could offer as to make a little disappointment inevitable. When you then add that games like TES are so ambitious that there are dozens of changes I would always want you end up with players thinking, "I waited five years and they STILL have not fixed this nagging issue I cared most about?" Also, technology and games move on so much in five years. If a company spends five years building something they lock themselves into their game working a certain way. However, tastes change and gamers come to appriciate and expect certain conventions new to be used by game -- a game locked down into a five year old concept is running a risk.

Fives years was too long for my taste.

You might want to wait for the game to actually come out.
One is setting oneself up for disappointment with this kind of expectations. The game will inevitably have shortcomings and bugs and will frustrate or even anger some of us. Perfection is unattainable. I'm happy with such a long development cycle. Makes room for more mature decisions.

If those 5 years are going towards making the game perfect, then it is not too long.

Assuming I could get a game of the same quality and depth, would I prefer to get a new TES every year? Heck yeah!

Since that isn't really reasonable though, I'm fine with them taking their time. :tes:

5 years wait is okay if they use the time well. As for FO3... how long did us fallout fans not have to wait between F2 and F3, not counting tactics..

With this level of interest in the series do you think 5 years between installments is too long? Or do you think Beth have the sweet spot?

I think anyone who's actually sitting down and waiting for any game is mentally [censored]. Games come out when they do, it's not something that devs postpone on purpose. Whether you simply get the game or not when it's out, or sit in anxiety and wait for X years with nagging and moaning about something you cannot affect - even in the slightest - is your personal beef.

Personally, I'm sick and tired of these gamer geek tweens who seems unable to fill their evreryday lives with anything valuable except computer games - and then [censored] about it when the game isn't released right now in 5 seconds.

Just because Duke Nukem Forever has taken 12 years to develop, doesn't mean that I'm not gonna play it when it's released this summer.

We waited 10 years for Starcraft II, and that really wasn't worth the wait. A long development doesn't really mean it's being polished into the best game ever.

Exactly. Waiting here is not sitting down and waiting for time to pass, it's just doing other stuff to keep yourself entertained, living your life. I don't think waiting 5 years for a game is a long time, because I'm not actively waiting for it.

The closest i ever heard was some time two years ago when someone told me TESV was going to be Shadowrealm i said "WTF the games are based upon provinces mostly" unfortunately they said "what about oblivion" i said "that's... different  " but that was the closest and seeing as i continued playing oblivion until now when i have finally gotten bored (but i've barely started modding :) ) so as long as it lasts me the same amount of time or more i will be happy

Games should get done when they're done, regardless of pressures otherwise. I could think of many games that could have been far more enjoyable if their developers werent so hasty with the release before they should've. ( I'm looking at you Dragon Age 2)

That's the best thing about TES games. Even if it does take 5 years for the next one to come out, the previous one will last you that long anyway. :tes: I still play OB regularly with new mods coming out all the time as well as my own.

But i dont think Blizzard worked all the time on it tough, cuz of WoW.
And the fact they were drinking alot of times when they were working. ^_^

5 years is easy, i had time to master oblivion and go back to morrowind and realize how lucky we are to have a game dev as determined to do so much better everytime they start anew, bethesda is developing for the right reasons, and i think thats why they have grown so much in the past 10 years.
