Is 5 years too long to wait between games?

Post » Mon Mar 14, 2011 11:41 pm

I personally didn't really like FO3, so it has been a long wait. Long is exactly what the wait should be, though. Each game should be a drastic improvement over the last, which is exactly how they are. That can only be achieved by a long production time, and they need to wait for technology to catch up to what they want to make. The wait builds up excitement, and allows for people to replay the games over and over, not to mention mod and input ideas for the next game. I think the wait was fine, I mean now that it has been announced look how much hype the game is getting? Look how much hype the game was getting before it was even annouced. Assuming the next game will be absolutely fantastic, the wait will be fine compared to the content we get.

Let's hope that that extra year was for fixing the bugs ;)

I think between four and six years is a good time between games.

It is a bit long... but it might be worth it. I'm pretty patient with these things. I just want a game that is less superficial (Oblivion) and more in depth... more factions, quests, options, etc.

5 years is ok.
Longer making = better game most of the time.

It seems long while you're waiting, but that makes the payoff sweeter - there's no way the announcement would have been the event it was (at least on here) if we hadn't had to wait for it. Plus, quantity of time spent developing should hopefully equal a quality game :)

I would rather have them use five years to make the ultimate free roaming RPG experience, than release a somewhat similar game in the same engine.

If possible i'd leave Fallout to Obsidian, and Beth focuses their energy on TES.

Not if the game turns out to be a well polished gem.

I don't consider Fallout 3 a worthy substitute for a TES game... So yes, for me, 5 years feels too long.

i think 5-6 years is just about perfect for a game like this.

It is actually better than 2-3 years because it adds new engines and development further in graphics etc. If Tes 6 is going to come out 2017, it'll probably have Directx11 on new generation consoles and directx12-13-14 on PCs.

However long it takes them to realize their vision... and share it with us is just the amount of time they need. (Well... at least as long as it's in my lifetime)

5 Years between games not only allows for significant graphics improvement; it also allows for potential hardware/console upgrades to maximize gaming pleasure and experiance.

This is a major issue with Bioware right now and Mass Effect. There has not been any significant graphical changes so the game, however enjoyable, is really like buying 2 expansions with small DLC in between.

They could have rode the ME games for 8 to 10 years but decided to cram them all in and spit them out (same boring story options, good vs evil)

I'm with the majority. Five years is a small price to pay for a quality game.

I'm fine with 4-5 years development, the mods keep the last installment alive long enough and the longer the wait the more there is a chance to have big leaps in graphics and other shinies. However if I was older I'd prefer shorter gaps (I would like to see all the provinces in this life).

They could do it like Bioware and release the game 1year after the expansion and end up with the rushed garbage that was Dragon age 2.

With this level of interest in the series do you think 5 years between installments is too long? Or do you think Beth have the sweet spot?

The only problem with 5 year development cycles is [drumroll]: people with low patience and/or short attention spans, and neither of those are Bethesda's fault. :P

EDIT: And, uh...why did this 4-month-old bit of staleness suddenly float back to the top?

For a ES game? No, the ES games are the closest too perfection in gaming. It's worth the wait. IMO at least.

It is hard to wait that long between TES games but I'm happy with FO3 and FNV and they both have given me hundreds of hours of great play while I wait. The replays of Oblivion have helped too. As long as Skyrim has great stories and characters along with the awesome environment I'm seeing, I'm going to be happy.

Better to wait 5 years for a proper "sequel" in the TES series then having sequels every 6-12months tops with almost nothing new between each other, like it seems to be the trend lately with most of the top brands in games.
Take as long as you want Bethesda please, this is why Bethesda,Blizzard and maybe Valve are on my top list, they take they're time prefecting it's games.

Yes, I think it is too long :(
I'm not that good at waiting and I'm not interested in the Fallout franchise. Luckily there are a couple other RPGs that are somewhat comparable to Tes: Risen, Witcher.
