Is 5 years too long to wait between games?

Exactly

Time doesn't always mean better lets show the grand example of that

No. Those years go into creating quality games that no other publisher has/can match (imo). Look at Dragon age 2 for proof as to why they need to spend more time on games.

While it might seem like a long time, I feel the product needs that amount or just about to correct the bugs/glitches etc.

Look at EA's products, made in a year or less and end up broken and shoddy of bugs and/or glitches. Not to mention hastily pushed out without proper testing only to capitalize on the customer's money. This is my opinion of how they operate. Quality over quantity I say. How many games has EA released in just four months of this 2011 year? 10+? We have quality and great titles such as Brink, Hunted, Rage, and Skyrim. Bethesda's Fantastic Four.

Activision churns out CoD which is essentially the same thing each year. Shame they only rely on that franchise to carry themselves.

I mean no offense or hurt feelings to those who do like EA's products or Activision's CoD games.

I would have to say NO. It's not. I would much rather have a great game in 5 years than an average game in 2.5 years.

While I love the TES series, I would get bored and tired of the TES series if they pushed one out every year, or even every 2 years.

Just be glad this isn't 3D Realms. We could be waiting 15 years, like Duke Nukem Forever.

It's 5 years only because they make a Fallout game in-between. Otherwise, it would be 3 to 4 years.

Thank goodness that EA doesn't own Bethesda! We'd be getting mediocre ES games every 2 years.

Better than actually having to wait 200 Years.

Its better than rushing out games in less than a year or two from the last one, making it turn out horrible. *cough* Dragon Age *cough*

No. We've only been waiting 4 years for a HL2: Ep2 follow-up, and people say that's too long as well. The thing is about the Elder Scrolls is that it was far ahead of its time in terms of what people really want in both RPGs and non-RPGs. Open world gameplay is all the rage nowadays, and RPGs are slowly coming back (though it's in the vapid new-Bioware way) so people are definitely interested in buying it. People who have never played the Elder Scrolls but have heard of it jumped and rallied over the announcement of Skyrim. I think it is not too long at all.

I would rather they make the games awesoem as they have been doign adn therefore taking 5 years between games then making them crappy linear games, adn turn this series into CoD were they pump out a new game every year.

Maybe when Bethesda gets to be a bigger company, they can whip out some "Elder Scrolls Adventures" (like Redguard), but i like the main titles (the ones with roman numerals) to be spaced out, well thought out, large, and most of all, a big improvement over the previous title.

With this level of interest in the series do you think 5 years between installments is too long? Or do you think Beth have the sweet spot?

I think 5 years is fine, for a game that will last almost as long as it took to make, as long as they are rolling in games like brink and fallout in the middle.
TES games are one of those games which I get addicted for a peroid then switch then switch back again.
For example, I'll play TES for 6-12 months or so when it comes out, then i'll play garrys mod/TF2 for 2 months or so, then back to TES for another 2 months, then WoW for 3 months, then TES again... then a new fallout game is out, thats another 5 months at least... on top of work, the next TES game comes round quicker than you'd think, for me anyway. :tes:

Edit : the post above me is a very tasty post too.

Bigger? After (nearly) five titles, and endless work, they are leading.Other games may be similer, but outside of Blade and Mount,Who is doing this style of things one this scale?

I think games like The Elder Scrolls and Fallout give Bethesda liberty to take a long time to deliver the next installment. But if you count Fallout 3, the wait from one game to the next hasn't been that long lately. I think the wayve they've been doing things over the past few years is very intelligent. I know if I was making games (or anything for that manner) I'd get tired of working only with the same world and material for every game.

Well, after the Oblivion sold so many copies i know they said something about their company growing in one of those early GI updates, i think there's always room to grow, so maybe after Skyrim hits the markets it'll be an even bigger hit. most of my friends didn't even buy Oblivion, Skyrim might have even more mass appeal.

EDIT: not too much mass appeal though...

EDIT 2.0: and I think a good way to continue to grow would be to invest in a division to make less-epic (but still very epic) "Elder Scrolls Adventures" like i said in my earlier post

Nope its just right Id say. Besides its not like we dont have expansions and Fallout to tide us over.

I literally just completed Oblivion (shivering isles included) on its 5 year anniversary.

Considering the game has a very small developer team compared to most games no its not a long wait..

You're not serious...right?

In an age where videogames are released annually at exorbitant prices and with minor if any changes from previous installments, long development cycles such as Bethesda's are something we should be thankful for, not wary about.

I find it funny that 2 other games have chosen the 11-11-11 mark too: Modern Warfare 3 and Minecraft. Five (six with MW3) Call of Duty games are made in the gap between Oblivion and Skyrim. Fast developers.

The wait itself started really when it was announced. But still, FOUR months have passed since the announcement. That's a lot, if you ask me. To be honest, It's harder for me to sleep the day before my birthday, anxious for my presents like a little child than worrying about a game that's six months away. (BLASPHEMY, I know)

Well fallout helped. If you don't like fallout you should give it a shot. It has an immersive world similiar to that of Elder Scrolls. there is alot of back story and events that intertwine just like in the elder scrolls as well. I know it comes in a different package but in a way its a futuristic fantasy game. Instead of trolls you get giant scorpions. It helped me pass the time for sure.

I imagined that being said by a movie announcer.

MW3 isn't even officially announced, let alone have a release date.

While not exactly the same date, Uncharted 3 releases 11.1.11.

Actually video game prices haven't really been effected by inflation all that much. There were games back in the day that cost 70-80 bucks. Has gaming been gong downhill since the Dreamcast? Yes. Would I rather pay 50 bucks for a game than 63? Yes, but the prices haven't really gone up all that much.
