Yet another start up crash

Post » Sat Dec 05, 2009 4:41 pm

Installed Brink, go to launch it and it show the splash screen for 1 second then disappears and leaves me with no error message. I've tried reinstalling the newest drivers for my video card and for my motherboard inbuilt sound. Tried changing the assests folder's name. Tried -novid at the end of the command line.

I had this trouble until about three hours ago. Apparently the 11.5a hotfix for ATI was not designed for Raedon Mobilty video cards.

Some computer guy modded the 11.5a hotfix to work with mobility graphics cards - http://www.mediafire.com/?rgmf0d5r892czeo - is the download for the modded 11.5a

Forum Link: http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus-gaming-notebook-forum/577147-ati-amd-official-whql-drivers-11-5-11-5a-released.html

I've been trying to get this game working for 4 days now and finally some guy in his mom's basemant instead of ATI's head quarters fixed the ATI problem...
Also fixed the OpenGL 3.1 driver game incompatability issue...

I also downloaded a config editor for brink that is a handy program to lower all the graphics setting for smoother gameplay, so it now runs smooth on my system.

Dell Studio 1737 - 2 Years Old
Windows 7 64bit
2.4Ghz Dual Core
512 MB Radeon HD 3650
4Gb Mem - Runs Decent 46fps -

Nope, that's an ATI fix.

The fix that worked for me to stop crashing on startup is this:

1. goto wherever your steam folder is (usually c:/program files/steam)
2. in the steam folder, go to steamapps/common/brink/base/video/assets
3. either delete all of the videos (they can be re-downloaded from steam again later, if you wish) or back them up somewhere and then delete them

For some reason, the videos make my game crash. It's sort of a bummer to play without videos, but the upside is :
1. working brink
2. individual levels don't use videos. Each level has some in-game cutscenes, which work fine. The only videos you will be missing that actually make any difference are the videos that play at the very beginning and very end of the campaign. I'm sure you could youtube them or something

ah, sorry for double post, but I found another solution which does not involve deleting videos

This one may or may not work, but:

earlier on, in an effort to fix some graphics issues in brink, I tried some suggested console commands. Turns out one of those commands is what broke videos!
I'm wondering if somehow this con command is getting set for people unknowingly. Here's how to fix the problem, if this con command is what is breaking yours:

1. go to your steam folder
2. search for "brinkconfig.cfg"
3. open that file in notepad/wordpad/whatever text editor you want
4. search for "r_useThreadedRenderer"
5. delete the line that has that command on it, and save the file

That worked great for me, hopefully that will help some other people out too

I have searched my steam folder and connot find brinkconfig.cfg anywhere.

Could the reason for this be because i have not yet been able to get the game past the Bethseda box? or am i missing something obvious?

I really want to play this game i bought, but havent been able to yet

Have you tried deleting the videos, as i mentioned in my prior post? If that doesn't work, then your problem isn't the same problem (unfortunately); something else other than videos is causing your game to crash. Maybe try finding brink.exe in your steam/steamapps/common/brink folder and set its compatibility options to Run in Windoxs XP Service Pack 3 mode, and run as administrator ?

So why did he post it when I say I have an Nvidia card? Lol.

Also, can't find the "brinkconfig.cfg" file. Will make one.

@ Dixie

Thanks for the help, but im afriad still no go.

Its looking very likely that I (and most probably the others) will have to wait until next week after both Splash Damage and Nvidia get thier heads together.

This is the longest I have had to wait for a game to work after its release, so i guess there isnt an easy fix this time.

Yea, it's unfortunate, but it seems like a lot of people will have to wait either a) for the game to work at all or B) for it to actually work on a level that is "playable". Hopefully people will be patient; Brink is a good game that is fun and has some cool ideas. I'll be really excited when it actually runs better for everyone

Add me to the list of users that cannot get the game to run at all. This is probably the most ridiculous thing I have ever experienced with any software or game I have bought in my entire life.

I'd rather have a refund than wait much longer for the developers to get their heads out of the arses and fix it. I could take my 50 dollars elsewhere....

OK there are a range of stuff that you can do but i wont post them if you guys aren't gonna do them or follow instruction. If on steam it will be easier for me to help you get running.

Chap, I have read the steam forums, these forums, SD's forums and tried everything that has been posted or suggested. So please dont just assume we havent done anything.

TBH, no one should have to do the things suggested when a game is released, it should work of the bat, unfortunately this isnt the case here.
I have worked with software updates in my work at a car manufacturer and once when we had an update screw up all the cars on the line being produced, i had to work 2 shifts back to back supporting this to get it corrected.
At the moment there has been no evidence of anything like that dedication shown here by the devs, not saying it isnt happening, but I'm sure you can agree some word that they are and an ETA would be nice.

Sorry for ranting here, but im just a little fed up now, with not being able to play the game i bought when i was told i would be able to after 3 days.

Doesn't look like many have done rolling back driver, patches and autoexec.cfg files along with maybe reinstalling drivers clean and also changing settings on your computer to figure out where the issue is.
If you dont wanna add me on steam and have me personally work through it with you then ok thats your decision but im sick of posting again and again on these threads.
Many many many games require patches and fixes and custom changes to make things work or if it already works to make it optimised and looking better than others.
If you have not experienced it does not mean it does not happen on nearly every single game for atleast 25% of the population.
Although this game has a heap more bugs than others the difference is these are getting fixed fast and individual changes according to the community which is amazing and a first for me within 2 days of it coming out.
So be constructive and thorough with your complaints and you'll get action.
If you want a support ticket service go to a bigger company.
Again here to help if wanted.

T.Vann

I'm trying to add you to Steam, however, I have not been able to login to Steam now for 3 days. I have a support ticket into Steam to find out why.

Here are the things I have tried so far along with my specs.

Asus M3A78-CM Motherboard - updated bios
Athlon X2 2.5ghz - not overclocked
4GB PC1066 DDR2 memory - not overclocked
HIS ATI Radeon 4670 512MB DDR3
Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit

1. Installed latest drivers for video as well as tried 11.a hotfix
2. Rolled back video drivers to previous versions
3. Uninstalled video drivers and have tried 10.4, 11.2 and 11.3 versions
4. Shutdown all unnecessary background programs and 3rd party software
5. Disabled AV (Avast)
6. Tried running Brink as Admin and in Compatibility mode XPSP3 and XPSP2.
7. Updated Audio drivers
8. Rolled back Audio Drivers
9. Tried Microsoft WHQL Video Driver
10. Called Bethesda Tech support. They had me try most of the above and even delete ALL Brink Game content, uninstall Steam, Reinstall Steam, re-download Game content with all background services and software stopped and AV off.
11. After 8 support calls with Bethesda they finally have told me they have no solution for me and that they will escalate my issue and get back with me if/when they have a solution. That was last Thursday and I have not heard anything back yet.
12. Tried standing on my head and using my left hand to start the game.
13. Kicked my dog and drank a beer.

All of the above things I have tried in different order, in combination with each thing etc etc etc.

Thanks,
Mike

Well, I am happy for you HuXx, hopefully Areamike will be able to get his issue figured out. Areamike, when you messed with your drivers, did you use drivercleanerpro to clean up any bits of left over driver before installing the next ones? Did you also ensure that Triple Buffering isn't forced on within your graphic card's tray?

Yes. I used Driversweep to remove all old drivers. Turned off Catalyst A.I. Triple buffering off. etc etc.

Still no game.

OKAY. Yesterday, I completely uninstalled Steam and then reinstalled. After that, I was able to login to Steam but all the games in the account were gone and needed downloaded again. I proceeded to download Brink again.
After a couple hours, it was done downloading so we tested it to see if it would run. VIOLA! It ran. My Son created his character and started playing. We have not tried it again yet today, but will post back if we are back in the same boat as HuXx.

EDIT: I just started up his PC and the Game still runs so far...

HuXx, you didn't change anything on your PC did you? I haven't tried with Antivirus running yet, but I make sure to disable the Antivirus when running the game

no not changed anything.
I have just redownloaded, tried to run, no go.
unistalled the gfx drivers again and used driversweeper and reinstalled my gfx drivers, had to turn off some programs to run the driver install.
Tried the game it worked again.
rebooted and it wont run again, l have now turned off my Tint overlay program and it works again, yet it worked yesterday with the overlay running.

I have been playing online games since 1996 and have NEVER had to do the stuff i have had to do to get this game running.

Fingers crossed they sort out this issue with a patch soon.

100% agree. This is the first game that I have EVER bought that would not run out of the box for whatever reason. For that matter, I've played games on computers that have no where met the system requirements and can still at least RUN the game.

On a side note: I watched my son play it for about an hour last night. In my honest opinion it was NOT worth the wait. Very cartoonish graphics. Heck the best part about the game that I see so far is all the different options you can do to make up your own character, that aside, the overall game play and graphics are pretty standard and overall below par with some FPS games already out.
