Yielding

Post » Mon Jun 28, 2010 7:33 am

Quite often in Oblivion I find myself getting a bit annoyed at NPCs. Maybe they're a little rude, maybe I get a bit sick of being asked for a coin... whatever the reason I sometimes respond to this annoyance by switching to unarmed and then punching the NPC.

I generally don't want to kill this character so after handing out a bit of a kicking I will yield to them, stopping the fight and getting ready to pay my fine to the guards.

That's all fine but something I'd like to see in Skyrim is a system in which NPCs would attempt to yield to me if I'm getting the better of them in a fight. I know sometimes people flee if they are getting beaten but this would be different with characters asking to stop the fight. I'd quite like the principle spread to characters like bandits who start fights with you. Of course, whether or not you accept the yield is a different matter...

Any thoughts?

I think this would be a very nice touch, they could try to yeild at first and then run away if you reject it. It shouldn't happen with all NPC's though, it seems like most bandits and warriors would fight to the death.

On the note of Bandits, it'd be nice if they were more like oblivion highwaymen this time. If you are a low level and are weak, you could just pay the "toll," If you are tougher then them, you can maul them. Would make speechcraft more useful as you could convince them to screw off, the game really is far too combat oriented in that manner, everything in the wild bloody attacks you all the time :sadvaultboy: .

Leveled-always-hostile-bandits is no fun, may as well call them "People you need to kill"

As far as yielding goes, Fallout 3 had this. They'd run away shouting "don't kill me!" or something of that sort. What was really annoying is that they'd go back to attacking you soon after. it'd be nice if opponents would just RUN AWAY for once, and stay runned away.

I'd like it, be cool for NPCs have a courage/cowardice meter or something.

Would be affected by how they react to your fame/infamy, factions you joined, what your wearing, their level of health, How many people you killed or hurt in front of them, what spells or special moves you used. etc.

All NPCs would have different drops and gains in this.

I kinda like the warm feeling of justification I get when I beat the pixellated crap out of someone who's attacked me.
So, no, I believe in finishing what you start.

You see - I think it'd be even more rewarding if some cowardly character who's attacked you asks for mercy before you bring the axe down on them...

But I do agree that not all characters should yield. And very few bandits/warriors.

Of course, in MW, when you got insanely powerful, even if the NPC wanted to yield, it wouldn't happen since he/she would be dead after the first hit.

I don't feel like a bloody murderer with http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=22392 You should see their faces when I tell them, "Get the hell out of here!", "Go, go!"... :P

If you have a chance, just try it. I have to tell, it is a whole new experience. Also NPCs fleeing was a part of Morrowind AI too, it can be activated by simple tweaks.

So definitely I want it for Skyrim.

I take them running away as a yield. By the way, maybe that's what I should do with all that excess coin!

I'd love to beat the crap out of somebody and then have them yield.

I'd probably leave them alone if they were just some punk in a bar or something. Might not be so kind to bandits though.

I also don't think fist fights should attract guards right away. Kind of like Red Dead Redemption. And fists should'nt be entirely lethal. Like yeah, snapping a guys neck should kill them but punching them in the face should be multi tiered. First it knocks them out but if you continue you can beat them to death.

Interesting idea...I would really like this. Also is it just me that finds it odd that the guy with the Prof. Farnsworth pic is right above a guy names Hypno Toad

Just remember, there will be no dialogue cutscenes, so when you yeild... all bets are off on what happens next.
