Do you also want to get attached to characters in Skyrim?

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 7:50 pm

I'd love getting attached to some characters, not in any romantic way or anything, but in the way of characteristics, making some characters actually lovable and make us feel bad when/if we lose them.
I'd like to feel attached to some character and in the main quest and that same character makes a sacrifice for our sake and saves us at the end. I mean, not once did I feel dependent on any other character than my own in past Elder Scrolls games, I'd like to have that feeling of being dependent and actually feel bad about myself if some other NPC dies for my sake.

Oh, of course! But as long as you make them have realistic personalities and such, we're likely to get attached to some of them. And if (like me) you over-anolyze the characters and try to get into their imaginary heads, you tend to get attached to them on a deeper level (like me, with the whole Syl and Thadon thing....)

Also, it was devastating to lose Martin at the end of the main quest (one of the reasons I seldom finish the main quest....). He was such a cool character, And, I mean, who wants to lose Sean Bean's voice in the game? Not I! ;)

I don't know, it really didn't impact me as much losing Martin. He was cool, don't get me wrong, but he didn't actually do anything for us, we did him like... tons and TONS of favors, saving his *** and what not, but except for the final fight he really didn't do much... He actually didn't do anything when I think about it...

SPOILER ALERT!! *** - Shadow of the Colossus

I mean getting attached to a character like in Shadow of the Colossus, when the horse died just before the final colossus... it made a huge impact over me, and over my friends. Even though the horse is not human, he had like... a personality, he always cared about the character and he followed the character and listened to it wherever he went, even through battles. Now THAT'S how you get attached to a character with not a single word coming out from its mouth!

Well, it's true he didn't do much, but I got attached to him pretty heavily... ;) I think it's the voice, more than anything, lol

And with Syl & Thadon, I hated being responsible for killing them and all that. I wish there had been an alternate option to go to them, say, "Okay, you both love each other even though you fight a lot, but the Madgod wants me to kill you, so why don't you stop all this petty bickering, make up, and run away together before Sheogorath has you both killed! What are you waiting for, dammit!?"

I hope they pull off a good character/player relationship with Esbern. I want to feel like he is really my mentor and by the end he should be a good friend. Each companion should be able to share some kind of relationship with you.

Elder Scrolls presented great characters, great plot and a vast world for us to explore, but I feel like I'm missing tragedy a bit...

I agree. I would like to become attached to characters in Skyrim. I have been "attached" to characters in other games like DA:O and DA:2 (Leliana and Bethany).

There were a few characters I liked in Morrowind, even more characters I liked in Oblivion, I suspect there will be quite a few characters to get attached to in Skyrim. ^_^

It's not like they lack originality, they're great characters and differ from one another... they have depth.
I think they lack the tragedy aspect, Bethesda should play with our feelings along the plot line, not just with completing missions. (I think Beth did a great job with MW and OB - Shivering Isles)

I felt bad when Martin sacrificed himself. But then I could just load a past save and be like "Oh Hai!"

I kinda got attached to Joffree, he was a cool guy... teacher like, somewhat of a mentor. It actually felt like he was in charge of things, that was cool. Would be cooler if he had sacrificed himself for us and then it's all like "My mentor has just died in a heroic manner! NOOOO!!"

I was pretty gutted when Yngvar doom sayer died when we came across a party of invading knights of order. I lay his warhammer beside his body.

I would love to see this in Skyrim, but I highly doubt it. Few games make me care about the characters in it, I could probably count the series on my fingers, and no Bethesda series would be on there, I think it's one of the things Beth games needs work on is emotional investment.

Couldn't agree more! Very well put :)
Though MW did a great job working on the whole "Lone-wolf"/"Stranger" feeling.

I think the "Lone-wolf" was kind of what they were going for in MW, and they did pull it off well. You were new to a foreign land and the reincarnation of one of that lands most famous heroes. Everyone was skeptical about you and/or wanted to kill you. Or they just didn't give a damn and you were just another N'wah to them. I think you were supposed to feel alienated most of the time, and I think it worked well.

Oblivion wasn't quite so good with it. They seemed to want to make you friends with people... it just never really seemed to work that well. Like with Martin. He was supposed to be a tragic sacrifice at the end of a long struggle, but when he died, the first thing I thought was "finally, that guy actually did something for once." There just wasn't a whole lot of emotional connection with anyone, even though it seemed like they kind of wanted there to be one.
SI was much better with this. Sheogorath was one of my favorite characters ever, and there were tons of interesting and genuine characters to meet and talk to. Overall, if they do it like they did with SI or MW I'll be happy either way.

I liked how they handled their personalities up to now, so I think that they will do god (if not better) job for Skyrim.

Shivering Isles exceeded OB in every way. It was well designed, strange, interesting, funny, scary, tragic and had variety of interesting characters and plot lines. God, I just want some tragic death for a change, that's all, someone to get attached to... and then having to lose that someone.

If I don't get attached to characters, there's absolutely no reason to play a role playing game.

When I started Morrowind I kind of felt sorta bad for the woman who lost her husband in the starter town, and when I went to kill the bandits in the cave, I had a "I just killed some people" type of feeling. But that wore off when I got further into the game. I had it at the start because I didn't know anything about anyone.

i miss Jiub from MW.....

Yeah he was a great guy...

Yes, I would like to get attached to a character.

Um....
I've never gotten attached to a character in Morrowind nor Oblivion, nor have I really cared for any of them. Maybe it's the dialogue, the voice acting, or something else, but they were meh. I see people claiming that some of the characters have good personalities, but personality isn't enough to form attachment. It takes dialgue, writing, and depth - something that in my limited cRPG experience MW and OB lacked. I'll use Bauldur's Gate series as the standard (not sure if it should be, but that's what I use), and no MW nor OB character comes close to any of the party NPC's in those games.

That's my opinion, and I'm sticking to it!

Lucien Lachance, i dont even know if thats his name(if a mispell it) , but i love this character, i really missed him when he died, he was some sort of mentor i would never forgot while playing oblivion, and some other, like amusei, we're both thiefs but he always got in trouble, i fell like if he was my buddy you know, i loved to just get in a prison to steal somenthing and.. HEY LOOK! ITS AMUSEI!! WHAT A SURPRISE!!" now im skyrim npcs will actually develop some kind of fellings and emotions about your character, its going to be awesome, there is always some npcs i instantly hate, because they are rude to me, or because the block me into doing somenthing i want, or because they are completely ugly, or , mainly, because they hate me too.. for no reason, and, i would love to develop, maybe some kind of relationship with a opposed six to my character, no i dont want to marry with the npc or have children, i just want that the npc per example loves me( or just want to be with me because of money, and, because i am a total [censored], i will let her stay with me as long as she keeps treating me like a god ), as i like to talk and do thing with this particular npc, like a virtual geeky girlfriend XD, so yea, they can kidnap her, making me unbeliavable mad!!
