Do you always play the province's natural race?

Post » Fri May 04, 2012 12:40 am

....I have never, ever, in all the years I've been playing Elder Scrolls games, played an Imperial before. I've never wanted to play an Imperial. I don't even like Imperials and I hate the Empire. But this character suddenly and inexplicably appeared intact with a story and personality and practically demanded that I play her, right now....

Wyrd, I asked you in that other thread to tell us something about her, and here's my answer! Anyways, I'm very intrigued about this one. Do share with us her tale!
Anyway, in Skyrim my first long-term character was a Nord. I love Solstheim and Bruma and I've never played a Nord so it just seemed like a good time to do it.

My first Sky character in both Oblivion and Skyrim were Nords. I don't remember why I chose Nord in Oblivion, but in Skyim I figured "Nord" just sorta fits. A basic Nordic male fighter. What a great way to start that game! ha ha.

I play Breton every single time. I can't pull myself to play another race.

I usually end up playing Bretons or Altmers, simply because I enjoy magic, and that translates into creating characters who are reasonably well trained in the magical arts while not fully neglecting blades.

Never could play a warrior. All that heavy armor? And so difficult to get out of in time when you have to do a pitstop.

Ive played about 2 Imperials, other than that ive played 2 Bretons, an Altmer and a Nord. In Morrowind I did play a Dunmer, but mostly stuck to Bretons.

Pretty much always a Dunmer myself. If I ever play a female character, which is rare, I play a Breton, and I recently tried an Altmer but it just doesn't feel right.

Yes, I have serious nostalgia issues with Morrowind... The fact that Morrowind's pretty much gone in the 4th era gives the Dunmer alot of spirit though, if you know what I mean. They're more spiteful and bitter than ever, coming from the deep sorrow that a cataclysmic event in your homeland would cause. The racism they face in Skyrim is also pretty interesting.

Playing a Dumner's always been good. :)

I find that regardless of what race you pick in Morrowind, you never quite fit in.

Wow, I never thought of it this way. You're exactly right.

I played a lot of dunmer in Morrowind, but that's only because I didn't know what else to pick really. I think some of my oldest (original) builds used Imperials and Redguards because they seemed the most "normal" to me. Some of my more recent (as in this year and last) games have been with bretons, nords, and wood elves.

Incidentally, those are my favorite races. I'm fairly confidend I only ever played a Breton, Nord, or Bosmer during Oblivion. I don't think I ever used any other race, and I have well over 1000 hours in that game.

With Skyrim I'm doing the same thing. Mostly Bosmer and Nord, but a Breton was my first build.

FWIW, if a game has a default character, that's what I use for my first trial run through the beginning of the game. If it doesn't, then I take the first choice offered. The first character usually has major flaws, because I don't understand the game's mechanics before playing it at all. Once I have some idea of how the game works, I go back and start afresh with a character I've thought out.

Primo, the Imperial male I started Oblivion with, racked up 100+ hours before I created a new character, and I still go back to him and add a few more from time to time, but I've played both genders and all the races (and a few mod-unlocked ones like Xivilai, Mazken, Aureal etc) since.

I do something similar. In fantasy games, I use whatever is closest to a Barbarian Dwarf, name him Glargg, and send him in to test the waters. As soon as I feel comfortable with the game, I restart with a "real" character.

When I started Fallout, I did an alphabetical test thing. Alfa, Betty, and Cammy went in and died, and finally Dertgerl got made, and saved the world.

Yeah, but then I went and broke it with FO3, where my playthrough character's name is Starr, and Dertgerl basically does what Wild Elf does in Oblivion.

I haven't played that one. Any good?

I'm not sure where I got the name from. A lot of them come out of "the air" (the "space" between my ears.) :)

After having the game long enough I will likely have played all the races. However, starting out, it really varies. With Morrowind, my first character was a Redguard warrior, while my second was a Dunmer spellsword. Then an Altmer mage (this was my Morrowind favorite) and so on. In Oblivion, my first was an Altmer mage, second an Imperial rogue (my Oblivion favorite). With Skyrim I had hoped to start with an Imperial, but I just didn't like him (not sure why). I'm still on my first Skyrim character and he is a Breton rogue (no magic skills currently).

As I say though, I'll end up playing a Nord soon enough, and only time will tell which race and style will be my favorite this time around.

I've heard more than one player say it's one of the best RPGs to come out in the last ten years. Me, I prefer it over anything Bioware has made (with the exception of Baldur's Gate II) and everything CD Projekt and Piranha Bytes has made. I still play it about once every year or two

Morrowind-Dunmer: I did it, because my character idea was a dark elf returning to his homeland and attempting to become a "real" dunmer, and not just some n'wah
Oblivion-Imperial: My first playthrough was as a Khajiit, but my PS3 died and I finished the game with a cyrodiilic Battlemage
Skyrim-Imperial: I'm half Nordic (Colovian) on my father's side? Does that make me a nord in Skyrim? Sure, why not.

I was a breton in Daggerfall if that counts for anything.

A conformist?
NO I MOST CERTAINLY AM NOT A CONFORMIST!

xD Damn this sequence had me laughing

Topic: Seems like it depends for me, i felt like a Nord fit in when i played skyrim, but i never played an imperial when i played oblivion. Think i didnt like the first preset face for imperial, so i just skipped that race :D

I'm the opposite of you. I figured a Nord from Cyrodiil who goes to Skyrim, the land of his peoples, is a slam-dunk roleplay.
