Do you always play the province's natural race?

Post » Thu May 03, 2012 2:04 pm

In Morrowind you played Dunmer
In Obivion you played Imperial
In Skyrim you played Nord
etc

I never played Morrowind but i will admit i played an Imperial in Oblivion and a Nord in Skyrim, but i feel i enjoy Nords more than any other race now and its very possible i may play a Nord mainly in future games also, i find however that i would rather play a character that can relate to the setting more however so i can immerse myself more easily. If the next game is in Eleswyr i would probably create a Khajiit and etc. If i ever get Morrowind (which i probably will) i will probably play a Dunmer, this might be because i sort of mainly feel i havn't given the other races a real chance in the other games and so now its a chance i can in their natural province...

But im confusing myself now, what do you guys do?

NO I MOST CERTAINLY AM NOT A CONFORMIST! How does making my character as the province's natural race 70% of the time make me a conformist? How does enjoying Roleplay and trying out different things instead of making one race through the whole series make me a conformist?

You like to fit in. You'd be uncomfortable wearing a Red Sox hat to a Yankees game. ;)

I'm kidding, of course, but I'm the opposite. I like to play the "outsider" in these games, so I'm more likely to choose races that are not the local one. My happiest Morrowind character was an Imperial, and I like to play elves and Bretons in Oblivion.

I'm not a big fan of Imperials. Morrowind was a long time ago so I can't quite recall if I played a Dunmer or not, but I think I didn't. I never play Imperials though, I don't like them for some reason, so no.

I dont ONLY play the native character, i have many other characters who have their own original backstories and what-not, but i always find my main character is the native race because i enjoy creating stories which feel relative, example, if the next game is in Eleswyr i would make a khajit FIRST because i would so enjoy creating a young pickpocket scoundrel who grew up with the wrong crowd, but proves himself a little later in the story, but afterwards i would create another race who has an equally fun story ^^

I had hoped the "wink face" in my first reply would show I was just playing. :)

Obviously, there's no right or wrong way to play a single-player game. In my case, I tend to play against the "local race" rather than with it, and I think that's because I like a little bit of tension in my role play. The ideal situation, for me, is if the locals tend to be a bit hostile; it was great in Morrowind, because even if you played as a Dunmer, you were still an Outlander, and they regarded you with suspicion.

I like to start as an outsider. That way the character is as clueless as I am on the first playthrough.

Oblivion: female "main" Dunmer... and a male Altmer.
Skyrim: female "main" nord... next will be a female Bosmer.
Morrowind: female "main" Dunmer

Same here. In Morrowind my character is a Nord and in Oblivion it′s a Dunmer  However I didn′t do that intentionally, it just so happened.

Arena: Dunmer
Daggerfall: Dunmer
Morrowind: Dunmer
Oblivion: Nord
Skyrim: Where's there?

Some early thread contribution, those mentioning "conformist" hold ironic personal significance. Prior to Oblivion, where my decrepit avatar is a stock Warrior with Warrior birth-sign, all my characters were highly customized. Being dark-elves, I saw them as marching to the sound of their own drums and not much worried over what anyone else thought of them. Their class name: "nonconformist".

I like to play them all, and add a few more with mods. I played an Orc in Daggerfall.

My complete racial profile of characters is as follows...

Imperials: at least 3

Nords: 2

Redguard: 2

Breton: 1

High Elf: 1

Dark Elf: 1

Wood Elf: 1

I've never played a cat-person, lizard-person, or orc. Anyways, obviously I do not always play the province's natural race. I think my very first character (Lady Anne) was a Nord, matter of fact.

In Morrowind if you play as a Dunmer you're still considered an outsider because you weren't born and bred there. I still played as Dunmer the most out of the vanilla races in Morrowind because I liked their voice(with male) and racial characteristics the most. Also would usually play a Nightblade or custom variation.

In Oblivion I didn't like elves much because they all seemed homogeneous and I didn't like looks of humans much either so I always tried out custom races with mods.

In Skyrim my first char was actually a Bosmer, because they looked acceptable in my eyes this time, and I always wanted to play as a serious one based on their racial description.

In Morrowind and Oblivion I mainly played Bretons, when I played a vanilla race. Most often I play custom races. I usually make a unique race for each character, one that has stats (and often a birthsign) tailored specifically for that character.

My newest character though, the Oblivion character I just created and began playing yesterday, is an Imperial. I have never, ever, in all the years I've been playing Elder Scrolls games, played an Imperial before. I've never wanted to play an Imperial. I don't even like Imperials and I hate the Empire. But this character suddenly and inexplicably appeared intact with a story and personality and practically demanded that I play her, right now. I've never experienced anything like this before. I usually spend weeks coming up with my characters. I haven't even had time to make a house. I always make a house for my characters.

Anyway, in Skyrim my first long-term character was a Nord. I love Solstheim and Bruma and I've never played a Nord so it just seemed like a good time to do it.
