Do you appreciate Bethesda?

Simple question. Do you appreciate Bethesda for making a sequal?

This may seem like a stupid question but its got to the stage where I have to ask the forum this. I feel bethesda personally have done a fantastic job with the series and think every game is unique and different in their own way. And yes, I would judge the elder scrolls as an RPG series.

I am not saying I think the elder scrolls is the best thing since sliced bread. I do like certain games in the series better than others but I like them all enough to claim that this is my favourite game series (like many people on this forum). Would you prefer to have the series exist rather than not? The way some people talk about Skyrim, it makes me think some people don’t.

Last year, people were wondering if Bethesda would even make a sequel. Now that they have confirmed it, everyone is all excited and of course we cant wait. When they give us game news and screenshots though... people have basically judged the game in very bold statements of "if they do this, i will never buy another elder scrolls game again" and "Skyrim is a disappointment".

I don’t mind constructive criticism about game news or suggestions about adding to the game. What i do mind is people mindlessly attacking the series, Bethesda, each other, about how bad and terrible they think Skyrim will be. Not only does this not achieve anything at the end of the day but it spoils it for people who are really looking forward to the game. And lastly, the pointless attacks on Bethesda who made the elder scrolls. I am not a Bethesda fan boy, I am just struggling to see why people throw so much hate and annoyance at them when A. the game is not even out yet and B. without them, there would be no elder scrolls.

So my question is once again, do you appreciate Bethesda for making a sequel and do you think making such bold hateful statements against the game before it is even out is wrong? Now I shall eat my cookie and hope i dont get flamed :P

A bit awkward to answer. On the one hand, I'm among the more positive posters and I love the Elder Scrolls series. I was very happy when Skyrim was announced, and I've since been happy with the vast majority of information released.

On the other hand, Bethesda is a company, that wouldn't be making Skyrim if it wasn't financially viable. So appreciation doesn't really come into it; I have to pay to play the game, and no matter how much I might admire the game's design and art, Bethesda isn't doing me a favour - and there are several things in every game that I could do better myself, given the right circumstances and resources. I'm not a fan unconditionally, and I'll criticise a game's failings as readily as praise its successes. I'm a statistic, a customer, with no financial or creative power as far as Bethesda's games are concerned.

I like the devs, and I love their games, but they make the game they want, and I give them my money. I'd say that makes us even.

I understand why you made this poll and I wonder it myself sometimes. You'd think it's the end of the world the way some people complain about a game that is months from release based on crumbs of information about specific things. As though Skyrim isn't going to be a fantastic game like every other game in the series.

I appreciate Bethesda. I appreciate that they focus nearly all of their attention on one game at a time to ensure that it's awesome. I appreciate that it is a relatively small company that keeps things focused and centered on their goals. I appreciate that they are composed of gamers who enjoy the series and enjoy other games so that they know what's fun and what isn't. I appreciate that they acknowledge the desires of the fans while still knowing what is best for them overall.

I appreciate Bethesda.

I have to admit Ive been waiting for this for years, and Im giddy as a kid before the holidays.

But, I am not one of those people that feels they need to thank someone for doing their job.
If it turns out to be the best game ever, its kudos time.
But you dont get all grateful for a company that does what its supposed to do, develop a game.

Even if people only like one game in the entire series they should appreciate them for at least giving them one game they like.

Of course I appreciate them, they're the creators of one of my favorite game series. :celebration:

And to the people who say they don't appreciate them because they make a game and we pay for it, I say this; They make a game that we enjoy. Obviously we have to pay for, but they charge us so that they can put food on the table. They could make a game like COD and put no effort into it and make tonnes of more cash, but they decide to make this one. If you were saved by a fireman would you say " My tax dollars pay your salary. I owe you no thanks", or would you say "Thank you for saving me, and choosing this line of work"?

Do I appreciate Bethesda making Skyrim? No I don't. After all they are doing a buisness. What I appreciate Behtesda doing is having Arena and Daggerfall for free for us to download. I did buy them but lost them, so it was nice being able to replay these games that I no longer could. That I am thankfull for. But for making new products, no I am not thankfull.

Afterall I am not in their demographic anymore when they make thier games so why would I be greatfull for?

Just because you have to buy the game doesn’t mean you can’t appreciate the work they done on them. I mean, people appreciate artwork but to have a piece you will gotta buy it :P.

Also in a way this topic was more aimed at comments on the forum like, "if they do this, i will never buy another elder scrolls game again". In my mind people who have made up their minds and make comments like this just.... ruins it for others. + being no point to them.

Actually that's exactly what I would think, in a logical and objective way. It's certainly not what I'd say or feel, and in that, you do make an extremely good point.

So yeah, without being so abstract, I appreciate that a developer like Bethesda exists. Gimmie a hug, Bethesda! :hugs:
