Do you believe in 2012?

Post » Sun Dec 26, 2010 9:28 am

The 2012 proponents are proof that a little bit of knowledge is dangerous - they've heard a small snippet of the truth and then have made a great big lie out of it. There's nothing happening that you need worry about.

Besides, the poster at the train station said the end is coming may 2011.

How did the Mayans make this prediction? Did they even actually make this prediction? Is there any other evidence for the end of the world? How would the world end?

They didn't. Its that simple. its just the end of the 13th great cycle.

The so-called http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reflexivity_%28social_theory%29 issue is a very interesting and complicated topic in psychology and sociology. There's also http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Self-fulfilling_prophecy on Wikipedia specifically about the "self-fulfilling prophecies" aspect of reflexivity. Also related is the relatively well-known http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_theorem.

If doom-sayers manage to strongly convince a significant enough number of people that the world is going to end, say, in ten years, then even though the world may not actually come to an end at that time, the panic, mass hysteria and general chaos caused by those who think it will could have such a significant effect on humanity and human society that it could be, from the humanity's perspective, almost as if it did come to an end.

I do not believe 2012 will be the end of the world.

...But I dream...

And lo, the year 2012 did come to pass, and there was much standing about, and people were heard to exclaim, "Errr," and animals did behave quite normally actually, and doomsayers were heard to cry, "he who was wrong will not be wrong [again], for 2036 shall bring the [new] end of the world," and mankind groaned and begged of black infinity above, "perhaps apophis will shut the bloody doomsayers up at last, best buy a lottery ticket while we're at it," and lo, the people did disperse.

And there was much going about of business sheepishly.

Nope... 2012 is the next Y2K.

People have no idea what went into solving the Y2K problem do they?
The reason nothing happened is because a HUGE amount of planning in the years leading up to 2000 meant patches and upgrades were able to be put into place.

No. If anything happens I'd imagine it would be due to a mass placebo effect. If you tell people the world is going to end they are going to act and behave like the world is going to end. Orson Wells broadcasts anyone? Y2K?

Anything else i would chalk up to coincidence.

Any day could be the end, we aren't meant to know.

Agreed. The world isnt going to end when everyone says it is.

While that's true, the projected impact of the problem wasn't anywhere close to what the public was lead to believe writ large. There was certainly potential for some chaos...largely in the IT sector with the largest impacts being financial in nature. The pictures of pandemonium, airplanes falling from the sky, reactors melting down, etc. that were painted by the doomsayers were ridiculous, though. Older systems that were still using antiquated date formats were already pretty long in the tooth by 2000 anyway. Did it cost money to fix for some companies? Sure...heck, many companies spent a fortune just to find out that they were already up-to-date. Techpolcalypse? Not even close.

No. The world will eventually end no doubt but why must it be on the 21st December of 2012?! Prophecies also said the world would end in 2000 and we're still here...unless this is the Matrix :ninja:

Yup the 2000 millennium bug was this HUGE scare because ICBMs were gonna launch themselves, cause global nuclear war, etc... and yet what we got were a few slot machines having PMS fits. Been told that the earth will die in like the year 2 billion because the sun will become a giant swallowing the earth or scorching the crap out of it. After 1 to 3 million more years it will diminish or explode which ever comes first.

As for 2012 I think it's going to be a huge hype like 2000, but hey if demons start pouring from the sky then i'm going to get out my sentouku knife and my sho knife going to town on them. Guns are for Show Knives Are For Pros

No. There is no 2012. Count the numbers up, they go as 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 2011, 2013, 2014, and so on. There is no 2012.

Thaats why I couldn't get past algebra!

Actually the Mayan calender doesn't end, see here for more info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maya_calendar

It's just the end of the 13th B'ak'tun and the start of the 14th B'ak'tun, another time period of the Mayas. They even had described things that happen long after the 13th B'ak'tun so the year 2012 was not the end for the Mayas.
It's just the end for some hollywood guys :)

It's like New Years Eve for the mayas :)

Never herd anything about the B'ak'tun, but I agree, all it is, will be a New Year Day.

"2012" is an End of Days (or as mentioned above, "doomsday") prophecy or something similarly catastrophic to civilization, and as we know there have been countless prophecies like this. How many have come to fruition? Zero. If one wants to make it more believable by modern superstitious standards and acquire more followers years down the road, keep it vague and don't dare put a year or date on it. Personally, I enjoy watching each and every one fail. There's supposed to be one next month as well.

Speaking of End of Days, the reason the Earth doesn't end is because the Hero has saved us, we just don't know about it. You telling me everyone knew that they knew Arnold saved us all in End of Days? So if the day does go by and nothing happens, how do we know there wasn't a divine intervention or battle going on?

Still I think it is a New Years Day or some equivallent for the Myans.

Unfortunately I'm originally from "Callyfornia" and Ahnold wasn't much of a savior there. That being said (with regard to previous sentence), having that End of Days film in mind, he would be a perfect icon for 2012! ;)

I think a much more interesting question is, does it matter?

No, not really. If we all died tomorrow none of us would even notice. I could get hit by a bus on the way to the store, i could get struck by lightning or shot by a mugger. Or the world could end.
I can't do anything about it, so why would I worry? It's out of my hands.

Unfortunately this is too rational, and most people aren't very rational surrounding the idea of dying. I'm not either, to be honest.. and I would go to great lengths to either avoid dying or get sentimental last words despite having no regrets. Make no mistake, I don't go around worrying about death at every turn, nor am I paranoid about living life to it's fullest, knowing that life isn't without risk, but I suppose each time I hear or read things like this, especially the impact on society they will have, I make special room to celebrate inevitable prophetic failure because I take the issue with a grain of seriousness (I already used up the grains of salt). Although, clearly a good number of people take it serious way more than I do.

you don't believe in universal justice then? i'd like to think that all the unsolved murders and all hidden evil there will be retribution for it all, be some means.
