I don't know if it's been mentioned previously, but a man by the name (I think) of Charles Hapgood had a theory that our world went through a natural ice age every 10,000 years or so, to kind of "restart" it's natural cycle. It's more complicated then that, I'm sure, but that's what I remember, anyway...
What's interesting is later on Albert Einstein expanded upon the theory, himself believing that it was possible(at least momentarily, hence digging up an old theory by someone widely considered at his time to be a fool[This is Hapgood])
It's been over (I think) 10,000 years since the end of the last ice age, I'm pretty sure, so it's possible that there is no such thing. But then again, it wouldn't surprise me otherwise.
I'm also starting to wonder if it's just something that they do to keep you in fear. There's always something the world is trying to keep you uneasy about.
